Canadian April Lavigne stunned concertgoers at her Montreal show on Wednesday night and boy oh boy…some Perezious readers are quite pissed off at the pop tart.
Why????
She offended the proud Montrealites because she doesn't know her Canadian geography.
Quick geography refresher for us non-Canadians before we go on… Montreal is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec.
During last night's concert, April declared, "I love you Montreal, I'm so happy to be back home…in ONTARIO (another province!), CANADA!
If she was American we're sure Montreal would be a little forgiving. But April is Canadian!

The American equivalent to April's dufus statement this evening would be something like, "I love you New York City! I'm so happy to be back home in Massachusetts!"

First of all, most people don't hate Quebec because they speak French. People don't like Quebec because they wanted to be a seperate country from Canada.
Second of all, not everyone in Quebec knows how to speak English (some don't even know French). There are many people who JUST speak French. Yes, some people speak both French and English and that's lovely.. but people in the rest of Canada can speak French and English too. Most elementaries school start teaching children French in grade 4, so we try to learn our second language but it isn't that easy to do so. I've been taking French for 4 years and I still couldn't go to Quebec and have a conversation with a French-speaker. So don't try to say how we don't even try to learn, a lot of people do.
She might have well said, "I love you Washington, DC! I'm so happy to be home in FRANCE."

in Avril's defense Napanee is really close to the Quebec border and it is just as close to Montreal as it is to Toronto. I think she was just think Canada but minced her words a little. Not everyone can be as perfect as you Perez.

Avril sounded great in montreal and got tremendous reviews (which of course you won't be seeing on hilton's propaganda website) as well Avril got great reviews from both boston papers, it reminds me of spinal tap where the guy comes out and says "hello cleveland".

Not an Avril fan, but I honestly don't think it's possible that she doesn't really know where Montreal is - she grew up like a 2.5 hour drive away from it in Ontario, like 20 minutes away from the Quebec border. Actually, now that I think about it — she's not the sharpest knife on the tree — she may just think everything is in "Ontario, Canada." It's also weird, as a Canadian talking to Canadians, to add "Canada" at the end. It's like an American telling their neighbour, "yes, I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, USA."
What's even more hilarious about that, is that the province of Quebec has tried numerous times to seperate from Canada. Some french Canadians in Quebec feel that Ontario forgets about Qubec altogether…

In Canada you learn French starting in Kindegarten, so this was just a slip up on her half as we are all aware where Quebec is and that they don't like the English ( some do but mainly in the cities)
A lot of times it's blurred, the division between Ontario/Quebec especially in the Ottawa region! I use to work in Quebec and lived in Ontario and the only reason they are making a big deal of this is because she's an idiot and she's English.
The Quebecois French HATE the Ontario English. If you don't believe me, move to Ottawa. Montreal people are more English friendly than other parts of Quebec. The people who are pissed are probably people who want Quebec to separate anyway…
