Canadian April Lavigne stunned concertgoers at her Montreal show on Wednesday night and boy oh boy…some Perezious readers are quite pissed off at the pop tart.
Why????
She offended the proud Montrealites because she doesn't know her Canadian geography.
Quick geography refresher for us non-Canadians before we go on… Montreal is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec.
During last night's concert, April declared, "I love you Montreal, I'm so happy to be back home…in ONTARIO (another province!), CANADA!
If she was American we're sure Montreal would be a little forgiving. But April is Canadian!

To be a Canadian is to love your country, and trust me in Canada, we are all very proud to say we are Canadian. I think that what most of the other provinces do not like is that a party in Quebec is trying to separate. They are trying to do so because they want to be treated better and above the rest of Canada. Of course this is a slap in the face to all of the other provinces.
We do not claim to know the hardships or the glory of living in other countries, so please, forego the ignorance and do not claim to understand what it is like to be a Canadian because you never will.

I grew up in Ottawa, the capital of canada, some believe is t.o. Quebec is already like their own little country….just take a look and compare the laws they have for their province compared to the others. I don't hate Quebec. I grew up in immersion, and I still can't carry on quebec conversation. Anyways, some do feel that montreal is like an extension of ontario…not everyone in montreal can speak french, some only speak english…and just look at the signs coming in from quebec….the french words are bigger than the english

Can we please stop with the gross generalizations? All Quebecois do not hate English Canada and vice a versa. Please don't say you speak for Canada etc because you don't. You are speaking your own opinion on your country or in the case of Rebecca another country. And this will be in chunks as I’ve wrote a lot about the topic.
So clarifications on some of the things I read with a dash of my own opinion.
1) Ottawa is not the capital of Ontario. It is the capital of Canada. Toronto is the capital of Ontario. And it is Torontonian not Torontarian.
2) Canada is considered a bilingual country, but all Canadians do not speak French and English. I would say that the majority of Quebec and New Brunswick can speak both pretty well. But when it comes to the other predominately English provinces bilingualism isn't widespread. True, we take French up until secondary school, but that doesn't make us bilingual.
3) THe Distinct Society Issue- I do believe that French Canadian culture should be recognized as a distinct society, but that doesn't make Quebec a seperate country or what ever because French Canadians are dispersed across Canada and not only found in Quebec. I do think that actions should be taken to preserve French Canadian culture because it is a part of our history. But, I don't think the title of distinct society has been officially been made because when the conservative government (Mulroney's gov't) was trying to get the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords passed the major issue that came with the distinct society clause was that Native Canadians were ignored and they too should recieve this title. So, because both accords never were passed I don't think that distinct status was officially granted.
Also Quebec not being compared to France - I can see that argument, but I think it would be more accurate to say that Quebec French is just a different dialect of French, it is based upon France French but has mutated just like English Canadians do not speak like the British. We have different accents and different vocabulary, all based on that mother tongue but not true to it.
It's funny that Avril is FRENCH for April, but yet she still doesn't know what province Montreal is in.

And Rebecca has studied in Carleton (Ottawa) so she very well could be more aware of Canadian politics then some Canadians. She doesn't even need to have come here to know about Canadian politics. Anybody that opens a book and does the proper research can be better informed on Canadian politics then the average Canadian regardless of where they are from. However, Rebecca when you say no Canadians spoke French only the Quebecois did or something along the lines of that - The Quebecois are Canadians. So, those people that were speaking French were Canadians.

I think the reason that Canadian or Mexican people would resent being called American is because that is what people from the United States call themselves. They don't call themselves United Statians, or USAers, they are called Americans. So, when a Canadian or Mexican gets called an American it feels like we're being lumped in with the residents of the United States of America. So, that is why at least I prefer to be called a Canadian versus an (North) American.
And if you were going to use the label American to include Mexicans and Canadians, you best be including North into the title.

I'm a montrealer and I really never knew that there was a hate between Quebec and Ontario…I have friends in Ontario..they're fine. The only thing I ever hear about ppl from Ontario is that they can't drive…but I love my fellow Canadians. I do know that ppl are hard on Quebec because of the frenchness and what not…but hey…the french gives us something special…it's a nice european atmosphere and I love it:) Plus , Montreal is the New York of Canada…best place to party. Dans la province de Quebec, c'est seulement à Montreal que les gens parlent autant français qu'anglais. Dans le reste du Québec, c'est presque seulement français (je vis a Mtl depuis 2 ans, mais je vivais ailleurs au Quebec avant. ) Il y a vraiment un choc culturel entre Montreal et les autres villes du Quebec. C'est en partie du aux immigrants qui s'installent pratiquement juste a Montreal. Les gens du Québec veulent la séparation du Canada pas pour être mieux traité, mais parce qu'on se sent culturellement, individuellement et socialement différent du reste du Canada.

(I live at montreal since 2 years, but i come from a other city of Quebec, and its 100% french. Before to live at montreal, i knew one person who talk in english).
