Canadian April Lavigne stunned concertgoers at her Montreal show on Wednesday night and boy oh boy…some Perezious readers are quite pissed off at the pop tart.
Why????
She offended the proud Montrealites because she doesn't know her Canadian geography.
Quick geography refresher for us non-Canadians before we go on… Montreal is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec.
During last night's concert, April declared, "I love you Montreal, I'm so happy to be back home…in ONTARIO (another province!), CANADA!
If she was American we're sure Montreal would be a little forgiving. But April is Canadian!

The American equivalent to April's dufus statement this evening would be something like, "I love you New York City! I'm so happy to be back home in Massachusetts!"

I'm from Montreal, and I'm proud to say that I have both French and English ancestry.
Oh and btw, most of the people living in Montreal are English. The rest of Quebec is French (i.e. Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivieres etc..).
Oh and Quebec doesn't hate any of the Canadian provinces and territories besides Ontario, and its more of a rivalry. Montreal Canadians vs Toronto Maple Leafs, yes?

Perez– It's even worst! If she had been politicaly aware of what has been going on in her own country the last 30-something years, Quebec is the FRENCH province of Canada who's always holding referendums in hope of getting independant — but not all Quebecers are willing/ready. So we still are a part of Canada but lots of Quebecers hold resentment for the rest of the Canada (especialy for comments like Harper's, saying we do not own a "culture" of our own)
and btw the girl is ENGLISH and her name is AVRIL!!! In english and in french!!!! Not just in french!!! fools!!! her birth certificat says AVRIL and shes not french!!!

Some people frustrate me sometimes… I'm from Quebec, I live in Montreal, and I'm english. I'm not a separatist and most of my friends are also english. I don't hate Ontario, I have family there. I know people here who can barely string together a coherent sentence in french. Most, if not all, of my friends are english and Montreal is a very anglophone-filled city at the same time. Another comment that was made was that everywhere in Canada, you all learn french from kindergarten through high school. That's completely untrue. Even here in Montreal, some people didn't start learning french until grade 2 or 4. I know many people in Ontario who have never had to learn a single word of french. It's completely idiotic to group everyone who lives in Quebec into a neat little category titled "separatists". I love Canada, but I also love my province. They're both my home. Even I don't always agree with the laws that pass here, and the way the "french police" feel the need to control everything. It doesn't always feel fair, but I understand that people want to preserve the french culture. It makes Montreal different from any other city.

(continued from above) I really have nothing against Americans, and again, I have American family. Still, I've encountered proof of some Americans' lack of canadian geographic knowledge. One time, I met a guy who actually knew about Montreal/Quebec/Separatism and it's the one time it's happened. Quite often, people haven't even heard of Montreal. I'm not going to pretend that each Canadian knows their own geography properly, but it's also not unreasonable to expect Americans to know some of our provinces and cities. I always here people refer to someone not knowing which 2 countries the us bordered. I've seen some pretty bad mistakes like that, but I know it doesn't mean all Americans think that. Unfortunately, there are some epic mistakes like those that tend to overshadow those who know what they're talking about. Anyway, my final comment is just stop making generalizations, and stop hating every quebecer for no reason. There's no real rivalry between Ontario and Quebec, and by the way, Montreal's biggest rival in hockey are the bruins, not the maple leafs.

I'm pretty sure the rest of Canada can manage without minerals and lumber, considering there is alot of money to be made in Alberta and Saskatchewan, you know with all the oil. If you want to seperate, seperate and be done with it, but don't come back asking for charity.
What I find funny is that I have to speak french to french customers as it's part of my job of course. They should be served in their own language, but they can tell when I speak french, that I'm actually english, so no matter how bad their own english is, they switch over. It's actually kind of annoying since it doesn't really help me get better, but it's really nice of them anyway. Also, I've encountered for french in parts of New Brunswick (Shediac, Moncton etc.) than in Montreal.
Actually I want to address something said earlier about French people from France. They're the worst when it comes to discriminating against Quebecers. I speak proper french, and by that I mean proper grammar, so is it really my fault for having a different accent because I grew up elsewhere? Whenever I'm there I feel so hesitant about using my french because some people can be so rude about it.

about Quebec separating from the rest of Canada… some people are missing the point… if some people want to separate, it's their opinion, let them be, they don't want to separate because they are racists or hate us anglophones (note that some of us are separatists too), they want to separate because the province is so different than the rest of Canada, they even have been declared a nation within Canada by the new Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and no other province has been declared such a thing. Ethnic minorities and anglophone will still be in the province after the separation so this is not the reason why some want to separate. (if that ever happens, which I doubt since the government of Canada is letting more and more immigrants come in, people who historically vote against the separation, which is diluting all the chances they had in the past of becoming independant)
