The problem is that both the NRA and the gun banners are both too extreme. The NRA wants absolutely NO ban on any weapon at all, including assault rifles that no legitimate use as sports or defense weapons. And tne people who want a total ban are unrealistic - how would you ever collect all of the guns already out there. Instead, the right course is to ban assault weapons, permit legitimate guns to registered owners, and make those owners financially responsible for what those guns do (like we do with cars).
