Woman who killed two Scientologists pleads not-guilty
A 25-year-old woman has today pled not-guilty to the murder of her father and sister, who were active members of the Church of Scientology.
The woman today pled not-guilty to their murders at the New South Wales Supreme Court, following their stabbings deaths last year.
It is believed that the woman was suffering from a significant psychotic illness, but was denied assistance from mental health professionals because of her family's religious beliefs.
The Church of Scientology regularly campaign against the use of psychiatry and mental health professionals in problems faces by it's members.
It was alleged last year that the woman was prevented from receiving assistance from the New South Wales Health Department because of her parents had refused the treatment.
The then 24-year-old went on to stab both her father and sister, and also injured her mother.
A trial date has been set down for July, with the case only expected to last about one week.
It is understood the main issue will be that of the woman's mental health, and any assistance given to her from about 2006 onwards.

I'm not saying she definitely needed them, but had they had anything better to offer to improve her mental health, would she have ended up stabbing them? #110 Justin - my take on the article and from what I have read in general is that these drugs aren't like taking an aspirin. You can't flipflop around take it don't take, try something new, it's your brain stupid….she wasn't consistently monitored by a trained physician. Truth hurts.
Re: Justin – If you knew anything abt mental illness, you would know that regardless of her taking the drugs while she killed her parents she was obviously not taking them consistently, it takes sometimes up to 3-6mths for the drugs to start working. Its not like you take them overnight and you are magically cured. I should know my dad is Bi Polar and Ive spoken to many phychiatrists and counsellors! GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT

I remember when this happened. The Co$ immediately came out and tried to distance themselves from the parents, saying, "Oh, yeah, they took a couple courses, but they weren't members or anything," as if that makes the anti-treatement position okay or something.

While I don't agree with putting an innocent child (Suri) at the header of this blog post, Tom Cruise IS the face of Scientology and so is "Fair Game" (to use their own terminology. I cannot imagine what Katie's parents were thinking (or how much $$$ they were paid) to stand by and let their daughter be taken into this cult and how they can watch their grandchild grow up with these dangerous people. When the government finally does something about this, its going to get ugly and Tom Cruise is going to look like a brainwashed fanatic. All the money in the world won't save his career. My mother has schizophrenia, and if she hadn't been FORCED into treatment it was obvious she would have hurt herself or my father. Yet she thought there was nothing wrong with her, hence the forced treatment. Did you ever think she told the law after the fact (if she even did) BECAUSE they would have had to medicate her? Open your eyes just a little.

Extreme religious cults, such as Scientology, have always been known to engender extreme behaviour. This is particularly so when members of the same family have differing beliefs. If this woman was 24 and her parents were able to prevent her from receiving medication, it sounds like they had been granted medical power of attorney over their daughter. Not receiving the necessary medication would doom the poor woman to psychotic states over which she had no control. This is just a sad situation where a mentally ill woman was denied the medical treatment she needed because other members of her family had been brainwashed by a religious cult. During the trial, it will be interesting to find out if the state could have overidden her family's decision when it was so clear she needed medical treatment. A very tragic ending to a very tragic story. Probably she will be found not guilty on the grounds of insanity, but that will leave her locked up in some mental institution. A tragedy which could have been avoided… maybe.

Mistaking them for another family who are unrelated who have the same last name onj the registered scientologist list, (yes there is a list that they register).

@35 - I have a cousin who is a schizo. She is 29, but acts about 14 (when her disease started). She is incapable of getting a job for herself, can't drive…the one time she tried to walk to a hospital, it ended with the cops trying to get her off a bridge from jumping. So……I would say, age doesn't matter, at least in my experience.
There have been quite a few deaths associated with the church, you never hear about them in the news because the church has so much money and connections.

Similar to this case was a case a couple years ago in the US, when a young man killed his mother (a practicing scientologist). He also seemed mentally ill, perhaps even schizophrenic, but his parents denied him access to mental health care.
