Doctors say infant with rare condition is doing well
A baby with two faces was born in a northern Indian village, where she is doing well and is being worshipped as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, her father said Tuesday.
The baby, Lali, apparently has an extremely rare condition known as craniofacial duplication, where a single head has two faces. Except for her ears, all of Lali's facial features are duplicated — she has two noses, two pairs of lips and two pairs of eyes.
"My daughter is fine — like any other child," said Vinod Singh, 23, a poor farm worker.
Lali has caused a sensation in the dusty village of Saini Sunpura, 25 miles east of New Delhi. When she left the hospital, eight hours after a normal delivery on March 11, she was swarmed by villagers, said Sabir Ali, the director of Saifi Hospital.
"She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time," Ali said.
Rural India is deeply superstitious and the little girl is being hailed as a return of the Hindu goddess of valor, Durga, a fiery deity traditionally depicted with three eyes and many arms.
'Leading a normal life'
Up to 100 people have been visiting Lali at her home every day to touch her feet out of respect, offer money and receive blessings, Singh told The Associated Press.
"Lali is God's gift to us," said Jaipal Singh, a member of the local village council. "She has brought fame to our village."
Village chief Daulat Ram said he planned to build a temple to Durga in the village.
"I am writing to the state government to provide money to build the temple and help the parents look after their daughter," Ram said.
Lali's condition is often linked to serious health complications, but the doctor said she was doing well.
"She is leading a normal life with no breathing difficulties," said Ali, adding that he saw no need for surgery.
Lali's parents were married in February 2007. Lali is their first child.
Singh said he took his daughter to a hospital in New Delhi where doctors suggested a CT scan to determine whether her internal organs were normal, but Singh said he felt it was unnecessary.
"I don't feel the need of that at this stage as my daughter is behaving like a normal child, posing no problems," he said.

The only reason it seems like places like India have messed-up mutant babies is because they have a HUGE population and are popping them out every minute in poverty-stricken shit towns with no access to pre-natal screening or proper medical care. Just the fact that this poor little baby is being worshiped and touched and kissed by dirty strangers 100 times a day is totally disgusting, and so pathetic that these people actually believe she is some sort of goddess and not the result of bad water or what have you. At least the parents are getting money to help raise her…

Ive been to India and in certain parts there are washrooms like those, but as soon as you are done your business, you walk out and their are sinks for you to wash your hand. don't say this kind of stuff when you don't know anything

The legal aboliton of sati was passed in 1829, and almost 200 years later, instances of sati certainly do exist amongst Hindu families in the subcontinent BUT IT IS NOT MY ANY MEANS COMMON.

A congenital defect such as this child has could occur anywhere. In the west it would more likely be picked up early by scans and the pregnancy terminated. Remember, that this family is poor and ignorant and lives among poor and ignorant people. Maybe it is a blessing she has been born in such a community where she is regarded as something special. Imagine trying to live your life in the west looking like that with the ridiculous emphasis we place on looks? Life will be hard for this little innocent, but maybe being born where she is will make it easier due to their superstitions and religious beliefs, even though we in the west like to think we are accepting of people's differences. I wish her and her family well.

This is so crazy…I feel bad for her, due to the complications that could arise, and possible problems/prejudice she could encounter, but at the same time I don't because she's being viewed as an incarnation of a goddess and seen as a tremendous blessing. I hope she ends up okay.

Go educate yourselves before you make ignorant racist comments. This could've happened to anyone and anywhere. If this happened in the damn U.S, she would have most likely been aborted.
