While I agree that sending someone to prison for their sexual preference is completely wrong, I read a little more into the story. Four out of five of the men were HIV positive. Just maybe they were criminal in their actions by knowledge of being HIV positive and having unprotected sex with multiple partners. There are cases in the United States where men and women are jailed for infecting unsupecting partners. Some do it on purpose, they are angry and feel if they are infected so should everyone be. While I agree that sending someone to prison for their sexual preference is completely wrong, I read a little more into the story. Four out of five of the men were HIV positive. Just maybe they were criminal in their actions by knowledge of being HIV positive and having unprotected sex with multiple partners. There are cases in the United States where men and women are jailed for infecting unsupecting partners. Some do it on purpose, they are angry and feel if they are infected so should everyone be. Just a thought that there might be more to the story.

There is a gay underground society i suppose you could say, male and female, but egypt closes its eyes, they are closed minded still, if i mention it to my husband he states there are no gays in egypt, i laugh, of course there are, this is why there is a website about it, its www.gayegypt.com. We're not following a trend, we're not following a life "style," this is OUR LIFE. We may not have chosen it, and we may not know the cause, but for some reason or another, we're attracted to some members of the same gender. The funny thing is that people in the US are just as backwards… there may be better laws, but just look at the comments around here. and other things that happen in the US (like exaggerated racism, xenophobia, teaching creationism in schools), etc. Europe is 100 years ahead of you.
As for what happened in Egypt, it is just wrong. Some of the comments mentioned Islam. I agree that homosexuality is against Islam (and against Christianity, for that point), but laws should not be based on religion. It's a country, not a church (or mosque, or whatever Muslims have), and should have better laws. I agree that those men should be condemned by the Islam community, but not by the state, and definitely not sent to jail.
Also, those who say that having AIDS is proof for them being filthy, and homosexuality being wrong… it's really the other way around. This kind of thought is a major drawback for AIDS prevention and treatment. Non-tolerance is what leads to the unhealthy conditions of their acts, and so they are more exposed to all kinds of illnesses.

I went to Syria to study Arabic. To stay in the country for more than 2 weeks, you have to be HIV negative. So it was me, a few foreigners and a lot of Iraqi refugees at the AIDS clinic for 2 days. I wonder if this is their way of trying to keep the gays out? I have lived in a few other Arab countries and it is shameful how they think of homosexuality and female sexuality. Arab men are very friendly with each other and it is not unusual to see 2 guys walking down the street wearing tight jeans and shirts with their arms around each others waists, yet they are homophobic. But its funny because I wonder if all the tourists think Egyptian men are all gay the way they kiss, hug, walk holding hands and are always touching each other (not in inappropriate places though)!
But besides the issue of sexuality, Arab countries are not horrible backwards places and the people are warm, friendly and wonderful.
