Many people have stated that they cannot believe that countries still exist with laws such as this. WAKE UP! The United States is not the centre of the universe, nor does it have a mandate on what is right or wrong. Not every country in the world has, nor wants to have the values and culture of western societies. And who are we to say that they should? For many of these countries, government and religion go hand in hand, so breaking a religious law is also breaking the law of the country. Christianity does not, on the whole, condone homosexuality, but because in most western democracies the state is separate from the church, we are able to move forward and pass laws which we sometimes take for granted. (Actually it wasn't that long ago that homosexual acts were a criminal offence in western countries.) It will take time and the changing of many of these countries to true democracies before we see such changes occurring there. In the meantime, demonising Egypt is not the answer to the sorry plight of these men. Diplomacy, respect for their culture and a lot of hope is. My thoughts are with them.

Hey Perez, I love and support you and as an out gay man I support gay rights as well, but you have to take an event like this within the context of the location in which it is happening. I really think on this one you are taking an ethnocentric approach to the matter. Not saying that it is right or that it is just but Egypt IS NOT A WESTERN COUNTRY. Egypt has a government where church and state are not entirely separate. That said, the Qur'an strictly forbids homosexuality in much less debatable terms than the Bible. So again I am not for the persecution of gay men anywhere, but take it for what it is, and try and change the problems here in America before you try to spout of to a culture you don't know that much about. Having been to Egypt many times, there is something to be said for the fact that they are one of the most progressive Middle Eastern countries as far as queer visibility is concerned. Others being places like Turkey and Israel. Egypt recently allowed confidential HIV testing, and legally recognizes the existence of homosexuality. Not saying that they are right with their current actions, but that progress in such a country has to be fostered and commended.

You tell 'em,Perez. I'm sure with all this human right involvement, they'll probably get an early release or something. But as long as people are no harming anyone else with what they do behind closed doors,no one should have to live in the fear that they're gonna be sent to jail for what,or who, they are.

  8. Yup! says – reply to this

    108

LOL Perez, that sucks for the guys, but theyr gonna be surrounded by guys who wanna fuck all the time in prison, so maybe its good for them? NO?

The United States Government kept a South Australian man, David Hicks, locked up in Guantanimo Bay for 5 years without laying any charges. Due to the never-ending support of his father, his lawyer and the tide of public opinion (turning against the Howard government which has since been voted out of office) he has been returned home. After serving a short period of time in an Adelaide jail, he is now a free man. Before pointing the finger at Egypt, perhaps some Americans need to be made aware of the way their own government treats people.

HE IS PERPETUATING A CULTURE OF MOCKERY AND INSECURITY; A CULTURE THAT IS ALREADY SICK FROM DRUGS, AND PARENTAL NEGLECT, AND INSUFFICIENT SOCIAL PROGRAMS THAT MOTIVATE AND EDUCATE PEOPLE.

    1st loooooooooooove perez fucking hilarious
2nd Egypt is very different than nefertiti time nothing to do with that
Another race is living here …If y know what i mean

  36. Maria says – reply to this

    136

well, first of all, modern Egyptians are for the greater part not direct related to the ancient Egyptians. (look up arabization of Egypt). Then, homosexuality was not a concept in Ancient Egypt. There are texts that hint at two men being in love or whatever, but it was not normal. The makeup was for the greater part a way of skincare, because of the desert and the sun…so the minerals in the makeup helped keeping the skin and eyes healthy (though not in modern standards but believe back then). Just saying. And three years is not bad for an Arabic country. There are way harsher methods in other Arabic countries. The Iran does forbid the concept…they "do not have any of that sort" so there you go.
And even though I agree that from a western point of view this seems really unfair, but I think a greater part of the modern punishment is actually to keep HIV pos people from spreading it. It's really not the way to go, but they don't know how to deal with it properly…and anyway, it's their country, their rules, their religion. So just shut up about boycotting this country. If you really do not want to go there anymorem you should also skip any muslim country, cause basically, the story is the same. And anyway, watching your video, I'm sure they feel like they've done the right thing. Impossible to think that an Egyptian could record a childish and embaressing video like that.

hahahaha, who told you that? I can tell you (I studied Egyptology) that the pyramids were not built by the Israelites!

  39. fererra says – reply to this

    139

perez, im sorry to say i wasted a valuable couple of minutes watching your shit-for-brains video.
i'm middle eastern and damn proud, and i've been to egypt MANY times and absolutely love it.
you seem to be missing the whole point of the story. those 5 gay men weren't jailed because of their sexual orientation - they were jailed because they had the HIV virus and the Egyptian government is worried that if they leave them to run around and fuck every tom, dick, and harry, then HIV/AIDS will become a huge epidemic. they're not discriminating, theyre doing anything they can to slow down the spread of the virus!

  40. fererra says – reply to this

    140

and get your fucking facts straight. if you knew anything about egyptian history you'd know that the pyramids were built by israelites (jews) and not egyptians or pharoahs! and pharoahs and other royals wore make up (kohl) as a symbol of beauty, wealth, and status in society. not because theyre homosexuals. thats how homos act now, fucking make-up and drag and all that..
you need to understand a culture before you go ahead and point fingers. and its WRONG to condemn a whole nation and culture for an action that the government is doing that you are against. you don't live there, you don't live by/understand their rules and laws. just because i hate bush and what he stands for, it doesnt mean i hate americans altogether. some of my best friends are americans!
and your video just shows how uneducated you are, coming forth with no valuable information/defense, just swearing and not having a clue what to say.
get off your fat ass and get an education. and stop being so rude about everything.

omg… Perez u are amazinnng : ) ,, but thats harrable that 5 men are in JAIL for being gay!? Like come on if being a homosexual was a crime ,, half the world would be stuck in jail!!

  46. Adam says – reply to this

    146

They were jailed for having sex out of marriage and sleeping around spreading aids, not for being gay. Anyhoo on the positive, Egypt is Perez FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! Joy to Egypt, they don't have to put up with your ugly mug!

  47. em says – reply to this

    147

the whole egypt as a country scares the shit out of me… with armed forces protectig holiday makers.
as for jailing homosexuals… they really do live in egyptian times. sadly the world still has long way to go before everyone can be accepted.
i pray they stay strong and through a lot of pressure to the government they are realised soon!

  48. Lord Help Us says – reply to this

    148

    Perez,
Fuck you from Cairo!! Al-hamdu Allah that you will never visit Egypt! Stick to the ding-dongs and celebrity news and let the educated folks take care of the foreign policy, you dumb fuck. Egypt is a progressive nation and has a extensive gay community (I bet you could even get laid here Perez) Granted, surreptitiously thriving but Egypt is one of the most progressive nations in the Middle East, let’s try not to alienate our only ally in the region. The men were protestors, arrested under the guise of homosexual activity. Oh and way to incite all the anti-Muslim sentiments, gee that's all we need. Fuck Off and read a few books before you pontificate. God I can't wait till you OD.

  49. scgirl says – reply to this

    149

you know that in the middle east, jailing homosexuals is actually a "kind" thing to do. they are usually killed… by methods such as stoning.

by the way, ancient egyptians were not muslim, however the government of egypt is islamic.. and homosexuality is a huge taboo in islam.

yes this is the 21st century but that is the middle east and they live by different rules…

  53. TimeZone says – reply to this

    153

That IS wrong, but you have something in common with them, Perez… they consider unmarried older women to be "spinsters", and they think that a woman who is sleeping with a man is "made honest" _by_him_ if/when he marries her.
    Think about it.

  54. Jeff says – reply to this

    154

Yeesh I was at an Egyptian nightclub in 2000 that gay men went to although not a gay bar (certain nights at certain venues were known to be gay) anyway this one was ironically titled the "Queen Boat." The police raided the place and arrested guys under these same charges. It was like a bad dream. Guys were jumping off this boat docked in the Nile River to avoid being arrested. It was surreal. The next day the arrested men were plastered on the front page of the paper which brings considerable shame to them in their society and kind of marks them for life. I am sure it was even worse than that. My hearts go out to these men.

  55. emi says – reply to this

    155

How about everyone stops flinging insults at each other and show some respect. You don't understand their culture and their traditions, it's really different over there. And yes, I agree that jailing people because they're gay is icky and prejudiced, but you're just as prejudiced and wrong by insulting a whole nation.
A nation of 70 million people who contributed more to culture and science than you ever did.
And just like these guys were jailed for being homosexual, I know that more than a few guys were jailed just for being Muslim.
P.S Some of the guys who were jailed deserve it because they had sex while they KNEW they had HIV, that's a felony in the US as well.

  56. samar says – reply to this

    156

    perez perez perez!
yeah your right it is 2008, but this is a middle eastern country, half of which consists of muslims. sadly in islam its bad to be homosexual…and in places like egypt, pakistan, and so on they have police which are "religion police" who can arrest women for wearing designer sunglasses and looking too flashy…yes maybe a little underdevloped but what can you do..:(

Egypt also participates in a widespead practice of female genital mutilation. In other words, female childrem are forced to have their clits cut off. No anaesthetic, unsterile instruments. Some have their labia cut off or sewn together so it rips on the wedding night.

    Barbarric.

  59. sarah says – reply to this

    159

Perez, you're 'shocked' by this? It just goes to show what kind of bubble you and many other people live in.
This is not new news to anyone who keeps up with international affairs. Its not the first case of its kind and nor will it be the last. You've got to understand that the east is different to the west in every aspect feasible. Not just in religion but in culture and morals also, they are still decades behind the west in terms of establishing a state that separates its government from religion and a proper democracy. Rather than boycotting anyone you should be helping to raise awareness or help out with the case of those five men. If you and other people simply boycott then what good does that do? It just sends out the message to the Egyptian government that it’s ok for them to carrying on as they do because not much ill be done about it.

  60. lisa says – reply to this

    160

i don't understand why it's so shocking…egypt is a predominantly muslim country where homosexuality is against the religion. what do you expect?

  61. sarah says – reply to this

    161

    Re: Dawn
That only happens in the must rural of places in egypt. It's very rare (albiet not acceptable) and there are crackdowns occuring to prevent it. You make it sound like the whole country participates in that practise. stop being a dumb fuck and read a book.

  62. Sparkle says – reply to this

    162

    Well hi there!

Just for the record, YES it is way wrong to imprison people for that. The reasons are so messed up, if you say God created Adam and Eve, I say, well he also created Adam and Steve. Even in the animal kingdom gaysex occurs.

BUT perez, you went on bashing Egypt by using references to ANCIENT Egypt. I have to say, check your resources honey, cause (in the good times)in Ancient Egypt people were OK with homosexuality.
TODAY however is an entirely different story, so I say, by all means bash, but I suggest you bash the current administration and perhaps even the 'interpretation' of the executed religion.

    Toodles!

    183

The thing about Egypt is that, unlike the other Muslim nations in the neighborhood, they depend on US aid to keep Mubarak's undemocratic secular government propped up. Mubarak, who has been in power since 1981, isn't bad as dictators go, but doesn't have a lot of legitimacy simply because of the whole undemocratic thing. And his biggest rivals are probably the Muslim Brotherhood, an "Islamic Democracy" group that's just barely legal. I assume the Brotherhood wants to keep homosexuality criminalized, and therefore figure that this BS is just Mubarak. pandering to religious nutters, by being anti-gay, which always works. It kind of makes you respect Bush for limiting his shameless pandering to the whole "gay marriage" scare during the 2004 elections. But maybe Mubarak could be convinced to embrace gay rights, since all the fundies vote Islamic Brotherhood anyway.
    .
But here's the thing, do we threaten to take away Egypt's aid package unless they release these guys? We give Egypt $1.5-2 billion a year, Mubarak would be destabilized for sure without it. And the Islamic Brotherhood? I don't know much about them, but they just don't sound especially pro-US. Mubarak is usually pro-US. Hmmm. Well, good luck to those five guys, I hope they're OK.

  84. Very sad says – reply to this

    184

Horrible horrible things go on all over the world like this. We are very isolated in USA. The September 11th attacks were our first real wake up call when the hate and violence finally hit us at home instead of our embassies abroad. That is why we are trying to fix the world now. We probably would still be living in our dream world thinking everyone was free and safe to live life. But they are not. It is our job as Americans to either help them, or sit back and re-pave our roads and make our lives better. You choose. Are you so much worse off then these people?

First of all, as other people mention beforem Egypt is a Muslim country, in Islam homosexuality is WRONG, like it is in christianity and other religions, the difference is, that in some muslim countries law is enforced by the Law of God, not like in countries like USA. i must say that i do not agree with the practice of punishing people over their sexuality, but thats the way things are, i dont know how lucky can you consider yourself by living in America, maybe it does have loads of good things, but so does bad… i cant see how you people are "FREE" when you are forced to pay income tax when there is no LAW that tells you to, you have no freedom of speach even though you would like to say you do, media is so controlled that you guys live in a bubble and to top it up… all services provided by the goverment and paid by tax payers are of a very poor quality… lets say, education, health… no need to mention more, i cant belive how americans get so horrified about this when you judged a straight man having an affair… i dont think America is better than any other country, i actually think is by far the worse place to live ever.

    Hi Perez,
as a loyal fan I was rather hurt by this blog. You must know that it is not we Egyptians that make these decisions, our government is pretty much a dictatorship. I would rather you criticize the decision made by a select few than degrade an entire nation of people. America was like Egypt not that long ago, as I recall. Homosexuals were treated badly and ostracized. Because Egypt is rather conservative we cannot move as quickly as America.
Please be more open minded to other nations and their actions, Perez.
    Love always.

    Perez,

Some homework. ALL middle eastern countries see homosexuality as a crime. But, within the Quran is a law that allows grown men to have sex with children (pedastery) (but they must financially support them afterward). Have you not seen the homosexual men hung from street lights in Iran? Do you think Mahmoud Amidinijad was joking when he said "there are no homosexuals in Iran."? He's killing them all. That's why there actually are NONE in Iran (willing to come out).

Not only should Egypt be boycotted, buy your gas from a station that doesn't support terrorism (IE, Saudi Arabia and UAE). Terrorfreeoil.org will point you to gas stations that are NOT involved in terrorism of any kind. Don't support MOBIL or VALERO (Hugo Chavez is NOT our friend!).

Use your wallet to boycott oppressive countries who injure/kill women, children, gays, Christians, Jews, and American soldiers. BUY AMERICAN! The middle east is the 7th Century. Go forward, not back.

Get a small education and stop reading us news about the mid-east!!! In fact, Egypt, Kuwaitt and saudi arabia have HUGE gay population. I am an american in Dubai and I have to tell you that gay relationships may not be wholey accepted in this region but its really no different then how some feel in the states. Get over it already and save your energy. If you get pissed off everytime you read shit like that your gonna spend a whole lotta time being angry.

Good for you! Only, America isn't a free country for homosexuals YET, but at the very least gays are free to be gay! Without being imprisoned!
