You are about the second most misinformed popular culture icon I know, the first of which being the esteemed President Bush. First off, unofficially, Egypt is an ultra-right military dictato-democracy (officially, obviously a democracy), and a Muslim country. You can no more blame Egypt for being anti-gay than you can Italy, Spain, or most Latin American, Spanish-speaking countries, who are traditionally Catholic, for being anti-gay, because the last time I checked, priests were not allowed to marry their altar boys.
Second, why would you presume to impose 20th century ideals on ancient Egypt? Are Egyptians still building pyramids or crowing Pharaohs? No, as far as I know, that's the territory of Las Vegas. It is fine to be upset that Egypt jailed men for being homosexual, but at least be intelligent and open-minded enough to see that what is "right and wrong" are not universally applicable, and to see otherwise would be about the most closed minded you could be.

To be open minded is not just accepting homosexuality, contrary to popular belief. It's to be accepting of all ideas, even those that are in direct confrontation to yours. I'm a Brit working in the Middle East, and I have to say that you just have to respect the law! When you come out here, all the embassies tell you to check you have no banned medications on you e.t.c. because it's a very different way of life here, and the law is carried out unscrupulously if you break it!
There was some European idiot woman here on holiday, and she went sunbathing topless on a public beach and was arrested - of course everyone laughed and thought "how brainless can you be?!". Things are just different here, but people know the law and if they choose to break it they should understand they might have to face the consequences. We might not agree with it, but we can't change it so we just have to be careful if we decide to go against it!

Condoms are freely available in pharmacies in Egypt, as well as the majority of Middle Eastern countries, and the kids take sex ed classes in school. Do you imagine that there are no televisions or books here? We watch the news (on WESTERN cable before you assume that it's censored), we know exactly what HIV is and how it's spread, as well as how to prevent the risk of catching/spreading it.
The fact is that HIV is a terrible disease that anyone (man, woman, child, gay, straight) can catch, and people should be smart enough in this day and age to use protection. We have STD tests here, and you are not stoned to death if found positive. These men were irresponsible, whether it was declining to be tested, declining to use protection, or knowing they had it and simply not caring. They were not jailed because they're gay, they were jailed because they were spreading HIV and this is how the govt. reacted. What you seem to struggle to understand that Egypt is a Muslim country. Egypt is also a peaceful an beautiful country which hast been tainted by extremism or any other forms of evil. First off, unofficially, Egypt is an ultra-right military dictato-democracy (officially, obviously a democracy), and a Muslim country. You can no more blame Egypt for being anti-gay than you can Italy, Spain, or most Latin American, Spanish-speaking countries, who are traditionally Catholic, for being anti-gay, because the last time I checked, priests were not allowed to marry their altar boys.

I'm a Brit working in the Middle East, and I have to say that you just have to respect the law! When you come out here, all the embassies tell you to check you have no banned medications on you e.t.c. because it's a very different way of life here, and the law is carried out unscrupulously if you break it!
There was some European idiot woman here on holiday, and she went sunbathing topless on a public beach and was arrested - of course everyone laughed and thought "how brainless can you be?!". Things are just different here, but people know the law and if they choose to break it they should understand they might have to face the consequences. Kate, honey, I'm more disturbed by your sheer lack of knowledge than by Perez's story. Condoms are freely available in pharmacies in Egypt, as well as the majority of Middle Eastern countries, and the kids take sex ed classes in school. Do you imagine that there are no televisions or books here? We watch the news (on WESTERN cable before you assume that it's censored), we know exactly what HIV is and how it's spread, as well as how to prevent the risk of catching/spreading it.
The fact is that HIV is a terrible disease that anyone (man, woman, child, gay, straight) can catch, and people should be smart enough in this day and age to use protection. We have STD tests here, and you are not stoned to death if found positive. These men were irresponsible, whether it was declining to be tested, declining to use protection, or knowing they had it and simply not caring. They were not jailed because they're gay, they were jailed because they were spreading HIV and this is how the govt. reacted. I'm sure it's to scare people into being more careful, rather scare people into being straight, because 3 years is a very light sentence.
