Bad News For American Idol

Filed under: TV News > American Idol

idol1.jpg

Fox's Idol Gives Back show was the highest rated program on Wednesday. However, it received lower ratings this year than it did during its debut last year.

Much lower!

Producers even had A-List performances lined up, such as Mariah Carey, Rihanna and Fergie. But, not even that, nor Brad Pitt's appearance helped with the ratings.

The show went down 34% among adult viewers in ages 18-49.

Last year's show was marked as a regular show in which contestants would be eliminated at the end, but they were surprised when elimination was moved for the next night. This year's show was marked as a "special" with no elimination involved.

Maybe that had something to do with it?

And, the promised appearances by the presidential candidates were not included. It will be aired tonight instead.

The benefit show yesterday helped to raise at least $22 million, according to Billboard. Fox is stating that this year's donations will be higher than that amount and will release the final number later tonight.

Has Idol lost it's touch?

    RE: That's nice

yes, thankfully I am employed and I do actually live in Cali. I felt like I am fortunate right now and should donate what I can, I do realize the economy sucks right now and EVERYONE is struggling, but I try and do what I can for others and hopefully when I need it people will be there for me. It's time everyone comes together for the good of all, which I think makes this election more important than ever. We need to take back our country from corp. greed and build better communities.

I'd LOVE to know how much PEREZ called in?$? Mariah was put on when the show was running into overtime. I credit her for a large reason why the donations this year when up even higher. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOU MOUTH IS PEOPLE—It is NOT too late to DONATE! Go on line Now!!

My COX cable guide had the show on earlier so I only caught the first 20 minutes! I wonder if this affected a lot of homes! If it did that could be a HUGE reason why the ratings and the donations are down…

The ratings were lower because everyone knew there was no elimination. That was the only reason I sat through that long, boring program last season. Why do they think that watching Terri Hatcher singing terribly will make people want to donate to charity?

The real problem isn't the exploitation or lower viewing numbers… its the fact that the economy is HORRIBLE and very few people have the expendable income to give to ANOTHER charity when have of American families right now could qualify for some type of assistance themselves! America has been and hopefully will continue to be the worlds benefactor… We cant give back if we don't have it though… I hope to god Hillary Clinton Wins this election and helps bring this country back so we can GIVE BACK with IDOL

Love the show, and yes, I believe it helping the charities of your choice if and
when you can afford it. However, I feel our sad country comes first for both
people and animals. We're slowly going down the tubes folks.

  13. What happened to last year's money? says – reply to this

    113

Some people like me didn't watch because the money from last year is unaccounted for and at leasts Five Million wasn't accounted for and/or spent. Where is it? That's why I couldn't support it this year. Every single penny of viewer money that is donated should be accounted for. That's the law for non-profits. It all seems sort of shady to me. But that said, I did hear Annie Lennox and she blew my mind and the house down. God, I love her.

  14. Why not to give this year says – reply to this

    114

Re: kp – #88 kp, loved your post times ten! But in all honesty, I am the cranky lady who corrects Perez's grammar! (46). It's very painful to watch this show about poverty when I have been in the real estate business for 15 years, never done a bad loan, never pushed anyone into a shitty ARM or a crappy loan they couldn't afford. And I haven't sold a house since August 2007. I know no one here will feel for me, but when you're commission only, you start living on your home equity line of credit to make your own measly house payment (very modest house btw) and I simply can't give a penny to Idol this year. I have my charities and give what I can, but there is no room for Idol whatsoever. For all you in real estate suffering out there: no income like me, clients who want more for their house than it's worth and buyers who won't decide ~ or you not in real estate and out of a job or upside down on your mortgage, hang in there! No matter what we do for a living, we have to take care of ourselves first.

    115

I think the ratings tanked because Americans are tired of our taxes and fund raising going to other countries. It's time to tighten our belts. As Bette Davis once said "Hold on to your seats, we are in for a bumpy ride"

I got an email on Sunday asking if me and whomever else would come down to LA that day, gave me about 3 hour window, and be there for the taping of the show.. apparently they didnt even have enough seat fillers..

    118

The show aired earlier on the west coast, and was not picked up by DVR recorders. I missed out, as did most people i talked to, because of this reason. Bad statistics.

    119

Uh- it was SOOOOOOOO boring. AND the performances were terrible, some felt lip synched (mimi) and it's tough to see people who MAKE millions start begging you to give your own dough when if they had their checkbooks, it could have been over in 5 minutes. Because they LOOK better making YOU give money.

  20. eww says – reply to this

    120

maybe it has to do with the fact that SOME OF THE TALENT THEY SIGNED UP AND ADVERTISED AS PERFOMERS didn't appear as promised??

Um, hello? Maroon 5? Celine Dion?

Instead they included a weak-ass Teri Hatcher doing a Carrie Underwood song, and TWO separate performances by that Lohan-ho wannabe Miley Cyrus? Way to hit the demographics there, boyz.

Miley Cyrus and Teri Hatcher weren't left on the cutting room floor? WTF?

I hate American Idol. So over it. If u wanna donate to a cause, do it. Fuck fake ass promises to get ratings for supposed cause money. If people really wanna donate 2 a cause they'll do it anyway regardless of what the show promises.

  30. Change or die says – reply to this

    130

Idol has lost a lot of audience because they were too slow to change the show to make it hipper until it was too late. They should have allowed the instruments and updated themes a long time ago. Why did the american public have to suffer through 5 years of disco week? NO ONE listens to that. How about Guns and Roses week? Or White Stripes week? Hell I'll even settle for Rhianna week. And enough with the retards in the audtions already, it's not even funny anymore.

  31. SLOW says – reply to this

    131

It was slow and needs more enteratiners among a more variety of age ranges. To me it seemed there weren't as many high profile entertainers actually entertaining.

I watch Idol, but I was not interested and turned off by megarich celebrities asking for money. Plus it was too depressing to see all the sad situations in our world. Not a nice way to call it a evening and go to sleep.

And no, it hasn't. They raised a lot of money for a great cause.

  39. meezergeezer says – reply to this

    139

No, we are simply tired of being constantly preached to by celebretards. Last year's show was simpler, with fewer celebrities and a more "real" feel to it. How many celebrities with sad faces, hugging children who look totally confused by the entire process, can we see before it all becomes somewhat meaningless and starts looking like self-promotion? We are not tired of being charitable, we're simply fed to the teeth with these jerks shoving themselves into the process.

I'm not surprised at all that ratings went down; They drag that show out wayyyy to much–having too much of anything makes people bored easily. I'm still mad they had 2 weeks of Beatles songs!

No, they just had sucky performers.

  45. elisha says – reply to this

    145

of course brad pitt's appearance didnt help ratings! He's a jackass!

  46. Pixiestix says – reply to this

    146

$22 Million could have been quadrupled if many of the celebrities begging for donations had chipped in from their ample cash reserves. Didnt Celine Dion make over 500 million from her Vegas gig? She sould have donated 22 million on her own and wouldtn have even felt a ripple in her lifestyle. Of course, we dont know for sure which celebrities gave and what they gave but it is a bit unnerving to see them preaching & begging for donations from Americans who are suffering the effects of one of the worst economies in recent memory with thousands losing their homes and their jobs. Go for it Simon, dig deep in to that American Idol cash vault you've built up and give a million or two….you too Robin Williams and Miley Cyrus….

  47. shana says – reply to this

    147

They lost their touch long ago after the first season. They should have just stopped.
