Alicia Keys: 'Gangsta Rap' Created to Convince Black People to Kill Each Other
There's another side to Alicia Keys: conspiracy theorist.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter tells Blender magazine: "'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. 'Gangsta rap' didn't exist."
Keys, 27, said she's read several Black Panther autobiographies and wears a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck "to symbolize strength, power and killing 'em dead," according to an interview in the magazine's May issue, on newsstands Tuesday.
Another of her theories: The bicoastal feud between slain rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. was fueled "by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing."
Keys' AK-47 jewelry came as a surprise to her mother, who is quoted as telling Blender: "She wears what? That doesn't sound like Alicia." Keys' publicist, Theola Borden, said Keys was on vacation and unavailable for comment.
Though she's known for her romantic tunes, she told Blender that she wants to write more political songs. If black leaders such as the late Black Panther Huey Newton "had the outlets our musicians have today, it'd be global. I have to figure out a way to do it myself," she said.
The multiplatinum songstress behind the hits "Fallin"' and "No One" most recently had success with her latest CD, "As I Am," which sold millions.

I really wish some of the under educated fashion and celebrity obsessed people on here would do some research and some self- reflection before posing. Believe it or not, this is actually true. Yeah, the gangsters may have been writing their songs, but the record producers and promoters were white. NWA and Murder Inc. did not start until later years. Regretfully, all gangster rap was encouraged in the US and low income areas. Anyone who read this article will realize two things- without the angle- it's not actually racist- it's trying to point out that guns and murder and propagating violence in music is not the way to go- the real war is awareness- that's her gun- music- her AK-47. Most of you probably have black in you anyway. All life started in Africa if you opened a history or natural science book. Homo Erectus and Homo Sapien came out of Africa. Deal with it.
What all of you fail to realize is the fact that the record industry is run mostly by white people. THEY are the ones that decide what kind of music will make it and what kind of music gets dumped. If they decided that they wanted to have songs about black on black crime dominate the rap world, they can do it. The artists either have the choice to follow what they record company (their bosses) wants, or quit and lose millions of dollars. OF course the artists are going to comply with what their record label wants. Why do you think hip hop is so stupid and ignorant today? It's because that is what the record companies want- to make blacks look ignorant and retarded. And any "Soulja Boy" or other fool looking to cash in is more than willing to shuck and jive for their check.
You know aside from what alicia keys may think just reading most of the racist comments on this page let's me know that there are a lot of cowards that want to say off the wall ignorant things about blacks but would neve Say it face to face in fear of an ass whopping. I have never liked Alicia Keys, she offers us the perfect example of reverse racisiom.
Her 'theory' could not be more bigoted!!! I don't care if it's blacks agaisnt whites or whites against blacks, racism is racism and it hurts everyone! I think it's time we all move into the 21st century and move on from the past. I am so tired of this blame game between races'. Yes terrible autrocities have been committed in the past, and they have hurt everyone. But we learn from our mistakes and we move on, continuing to bring up these things or creating retarded theories just halts progress and healing.

I think people are reading it as her speaking against whites, since AK talks about blacks being manipulated by the gov't and the media…it's kind of inferred that "the Gov't and the media" are the White Man. Throw in the Black Panther reference, a radical group, and it's not a far leap for some readers to reach. I am just saying that this is probably where whites would feel insulted by these comments even though she doesn't specifically say "whites." Maybe I am off base, but that's my two cents …peace out.

The government does want to keep people of colour down. One way to do that is the "divide and conquer" method. This method is also used on females. Females are presented to each other - in the media - as competition, and the instead of having each others backs, we do the dirty work ourselves.
We see it all over this site: Women HATE other women, don't trust them, and are jealous of them. We are socialized to feel this way. The media reinforces it. We reinforce it to each other.
Keeping the black community separated is an extremely effective way of keeping the black community controlled. It places a ceiling over everyone. The media is a great tool for creating conflict.
No one is saying "N.W.A and biggie and tupac were government agents." It's not as simple as that. I believe she is asserting that they were little puppets, playing out a drama the media (and the viewers) wanted them to play.
I think Alicia is demonstrating good critical thinking about American media and culture, which seems to be horribly misunderstood by un-critical readers of Blender. She's too smart for Blender fans.

I'm glad some people (you and a few exceptions) posted here. It gives me hope. For such a wealthy country, we seem to be experiencing high rates of illiteracy, which is quite sad being that many of these people are likely still in junior high and high school and should be taking advantage of all that free education.

The school in Toronto is not an "all black school" or a segregated school. It is open to whomever wants to attend. It teaches from an African American / Black Studies perspective. It's an alternative to the predominantly white schools which many would argue teach exclusively "white studies".
