The mag asks her why her Latina background has been so ambiguous. Fergie answers, "I don’t go around claiming it big time because there are many more full-bred Latinas that are out there to represent.”

Uh, she's 1/8th Latina. My neices are 1/4 Mexican and I would never consider them Latina since they are in a white neighborhood and have no identification or experience with any Latino culture whatsoever. Uhm…you people don't know anything do you?…for those of you that don't know…real Mexicans from Mexico come in ALL colors (except maybe black). Everything from white skin, blonde hair and green eyed, to dark brown skin with dark hair and eyes (but not quite as dark as black people…that's more like Carribean islanders and South Americans). The Mexicans that the majority of America sees coming into the US illegally are Mexican Indians….just like in the US we have American Indians….same thing. That's the sector coming over because they're the poor ones….if you go to Mexico City (the largest city in the WORLD, btw), you will see that many of the power Mexicans (business people) have European looks (similar to Spain)…and if you remember…Christopher Columbus (the 'white' guy that "discovered" America) was in fact a Spaniard….his real name being Cristobal Colon…"Christopher Columbus" is just what American history calls him…it's not his actual name. As Spain took over Mexico and the Mexican Indians way back when…the genetic make up of the country also changed….much like the US is changing now a days by the influx of immigrants.

My grandfather is from Spain, making me 1/4 Spanish (Along with 1/4 French and 1/2 American, meaning I am very, very white) but I still identify with the Hispanic culture and learn everything about it that I can. I'm almost fluent in Spanish because I've been studying it for years while my little brother, who shares the same cultural background as I, is approaching fluency in French.
My boyfriend's parents were both born in and immigrated from Mexico, and he was raised learning about the Latino culture, but he doesn't resent my appreciation for it at all. He and his family speak to me in Spanish and consider me to be Latina like them, even though I am not full blooded. People with mixed cultural background just have the ability to choose which they'd like to identify themselves by or if they'd like to blend them together or ignore them altogether. Fergie is 1/8 Latina and she has every right to identify by it if she so chooses, just like Jessica Alba, who was born in America, has every right to identify herself as an American.

So she should ignore the majority of her ethnicity and be proud to be Mexican rather than be proud to be German, or whatever else makes up the majority of what ethnicity she is. My grandmother was Spanish, yet I dont go around claiming to be Spanish, because um HELLO I am more Welsh than I am spanish, so it makes no sense to ignore my welsh roots and and claim to be spanish.
