The French Ban The Too Skinny

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & True > Fashion Smashion > Francophilia

How are they ever going to enforce this???

The French Parliament has created a new bill that would make it illegal for anyone to publicly promote extreme thinness. This includes everything from magazines, newspapers, websites, anything media related.

How do you PROMOTE extreme thinness???

This has "issues" written all over it!

The bill has already been approved unanimously and is set to go for approval to the Senate in the next few weeks.

This law would be the strongest of its type ever passed. The proposed law comes after the death of a Brazilian model in 2006 which was linked to anorexia. Her death prompted officials throughout the fashion industry to re-evaluate and address the use of portraying extremely thin models. This also led to Spain banning extremely thin models from walking in their fashion shows.

The French Health Ministry reports that there about 30,000 to 40,000 people dealing with anorexia in France, with the majority of the cases being women.

Valery Boyer, the conservative lawmaker who created the bill, argued that any media outlet encouraging extreme weight loss or anorexia, should be punishable in court.

Last week, fashion industry members and lawmakers all signed a charter agreeing to promote healthier body images.

Under the new law, if you are found guilty of “inciting others to deprive themselves of food” to an excessive degree, judges will have the power to imprison or fine offenders up to $47,000. Authorities can also sanction those individuals responsible to magazine photos portraying "excessive thinness."

Some in the fashion industry are strongly opposing the bill, such as Didier Grumbach, president of the influential French Federation of Couture. Rightfully so!

Grumbach said, “Never will we accept in our profession that a judge decides if a young girl is skinny or not skinny. That doesn’t exist in the world, and it will certainly not exist in France.”

This is a troubling and scary issue.

Is the government going too far?

Is the media to blame for anorexia? Is it genetic? What about peer pressure????

So many questions!

    Media-YES Peer Pressure-YES

Starving yourself to death is not beautiful. There are some people that are just built very thin, I think there's a line they'll have to draw between naturally thin and unaturally thin before they can make any further judgement.

And for comment number one that said "Make way for all the fatties" grow up.

It's reasons like that that girls and women end up starving themselves to death. Being healthy is one thing, starving is another and it's not attractive to see a rattling skin bag of bones because someone is trying not to be "fat". This subject irritates the hell out of me because whether you like Paris Hilton or not, she was right when she said "confidence is sexy". That's true. Be happy with who you are and not what everyone else wants you to be. As long as you're happy and healthy that's what matters.

I believe the government is crossing the line.
It is our bodies, they have no right to pass a law.
What if a model is genetically really skinny?
The government is being prejudice towards them, will they get no modeling jobs in France or Spain?
    It's outrageous.

As a father of a young woman dealing with this disease, I find myself riddled with guilt about my role. I am a strong conservative who would hate government interference in my life, but am convinced that at times we need the government to step in. This disease kills people….. more importantly kills families, more than you will ever know. Oprah does shows about the toll of cancer, which is no ones fault… right? and tells the world we are not doing enough. But this is real, and neighbors shun you so thier girls don't "catch" it.
    Government here is right….

    204

Actually you can know if a person is too skinny (or too fat).
What calculates normal and ideal weight, obesity and thinness (moderate and severe) is the Index of Corporal Bulk (IMC).
You can search on line about this.

I think its a great idea… and yes perez… the media and TV is to blame… if you look at paintings from 100's of years ago you never see any skinny women!

I"m not saying we should all be fat and over weight… but we certanly don't need to see super skinny bitches talking about how all they do is eat… it makes other people feel bad… so it's a good thing to not show those bitches…

I guess it also means that no more Amercian movies will be shown in France… all of our actors are too skinny.

  6. lola says – reply to this

    206

totally not fair, what if people have really fast metabolisms or they're just getting over an eating disorder??? next the american's are going to put a ban on fat people… and then the population will drop. so sad.

WOW! So will they be fining Johnny Depps wife? LOL…This is ridiculous….

    208

Go France. This is not that different from the way they legally encourage companies from making people obese. Extreme obesity / thinness are both unhealthy and now are regulated by the governments. Transfat = bad, Starving yourself = bad. Deal with it.

  9. Lolita B. says – reply to this

    209

    Re: samantha

THAT'S COMPLETELY FALSE. There is no fact behind what you said. Not all eating disorders are caused by past abuse and/or trauma, in fact almost all the girls I have met in treatment over the past decade have not been abused or experienced trauma. Some of us has, but there is no statistics to back up what you said. Don't make incorrect statements. You clearly know nothing about EDs.

  10. Lolita B. says – reply to this

    210

    Re: Is it genetic??!!??

Actually this is not true either. Anorexia is being considered now by doctors all over the world to be somewhat related to genetics. That doesn't mean every Anorexic will have an an Anorexic child & it doesn't mean you can't be Anorexic if nobody in your family has been. It's just somewhat traceable in many family's. Not necessarily Anorexia specifically, but you can trace a beavy of EDs through families in many, but not all cases. There is also discussion about imbalances in the Hypothalamus section of the brain having partial responsibility for EDs.

i can tell you who is to blame, pretty much all these head honchos of fashion. all these gay men telling women thats its sexy to have the shape of a 12 year old boy!! and the dumb bitches who listen to them!

  13. pink dis0rder says – reply to this

    213

god, perez, you're such an idiot sometimes.

of COURSE it's a good idea. of course they're not going too far.

as a recovered anorexic and bulimic, i can definitely tell you that it's THE MEDIA. it's an obsessive compulsive type of disorder that feeds on the need for perfection. thinness as a portrayal of perfection is something that is the fault of the media and fashion industry. if curvier women were portrayed in this "perfect" light, or even mildly healthy women, the ideal would be to look like that. instead the ideal has become to look like these women.

personally, i think it's a disgusting look. anyone who's that skinny is just nasty looking and NOT attractive.

it's very obvious if it's not natural and it's from starving.

that poor brazilian model…this is definitely the RIGHT thing to do.

  14. katgrrl says – reply to this

    214

How do you promote extreame thinness? You douche, just open any fashion magazine that's how!!! When the adverage American woman is 5 ft 4 and a size 14 and the adverage model is 5 ft 9 and size zero, what the fuck do you think that promotes?!?! Clueless idiot, get that dick out of your mouth Perez and use some fuckin common sence for once!

  15. Krista says – reply to this

Obesity seems to affect far more people than anorexia. Instead of insisting that big is beautiful, society needs a reality check. Big is no more beautiful than anorexic skin and bones.

How dare anyone say that the media doesn't play a significant role! According to studies, most woman with eating disorders stated that the media played a major role in their insecurity, hence, causing the disease! Anyone who says this isn't true, please do your research! I applaud at this French Law!

  18. kristy says – reply to this

    218

Really really ridiculous. What about people who are naturally thin - like me? I have always been thin - too thin - but am healthy and I eat! It's discrimination.

  19. Kate says – reply to this

    219

This is definitely a brilliant law. As someone already mentioned, only 5% of women actually look like the models in the fashion industry, so why on earth would you cater to that demographic when selling clothes?
And I don't care what any of you people say, the media does play somewhat of a role in eating disorders. I can speak from experience because I'm already fucking skinny but because of images pushed into my face everyday, I still don't feel skinny enough. And now I've developed Body Dismorphic Disorder so I don't even know how skinny or fat I actually am. And I'm not saying the media is completely to blame but anyone who says they don't play a part in helping this disease grow is denying the obvious truth.

  20. m says – reply to this

    220

there was a study done in new guinea or some small island where they did not have television. when it was introduced, women who had not previously had body images issues, did. google it if you have further questions, but that is a prime example of media influence.

  21. enGAYge.com says – reply to this

    221

How could you even enforce something like that? What is considered too thin? I don't think the fashion industry "promotes" anorexia. It is a woman and a man's job to have a healthy self image. It is not the job of the fashion industry. People really need to stand up and start taking responsibility for their own actions. Only 3 % of the world looks like the images they try and promote in mags. That's a good place to start by realizing that.

Seeing as I just checked my 16 year old daughter into a residential clinic because she was literally starving herself to death, I'm all for it. Size -0 is just not heathly and the media has to start promoting better body image-not fat, just healthy.

there is naturally thin and then there is starvation. And if ur gonna be honest most stras that as naturally thin means a set of fingers used to the bone.
It's a good thing since the media as a whole does push on ppl the thin factor. INfact just look at some of the post on here where u see richie so fucking thin and there is a wow posted next to her….. slim, tiny, bone are seen as yummy. Yummy gross… so hats of to the French on this one

  28. faithe says – reply to this

    228

um….that is just like banning fat people from the media to keep them from promoting unhealthy eating. It doesn't make sense. And what about the people who are simply naturally thin? There ARE thin people in the world that are healthy and are simply thin due to high metabolisms and genetics.

Good for France. Anorexia is an illness. Remember. Maryilyn Monroe was a size 14 and sexy as hell. Skinny and bones sticking out is gross. Models are "hangers" for clothes. No one but them can wear the designers clothes anyway. What a joke. Let the models be healthy, no sickly from starvation. How sick. Recall Project Runway winner Christian Siriano saying to his model to not EAT. Sick. Bring back real women with curves, sexual appeal and health.

    234

Okay, here's some important info to consider on this topic. I did some research on the topic of what anorexia originates. I wanted to know if it was genetics, environment, or behavioral aspects that cause it. learned it's all three. A person needs to have a three of these aspects in line before they are even likely to start an eating disorder. Genetics play a role in a person can have a mutated gene that causes a person to have abnormal hormone changes that can cause depression or anxiety. Many people have this and explains why certain people get depressed or anxious and it's family related. Then environmental comes from how their family raised them, many very unstable familiy strctures combined with genetics add to the problem. Many people get eating disorders just for control of something and food is a great way to do so. It many times is not literally they want to be skinny, they just want control of their life. Environmental is involved in the fact that they may see it everywhere and it confirms that they are doing something socially beautiful. Yes, it has a role, but the truth is magazine visuals of beauty don't cause it or are to blame, it is just a factor. Women aren't more likely to get an E.D. men have them too but men are more likely to have a different type of eating disorder, but that's a whole different topic. Anyways, the government can't control it, but they are helping but it won't change much.

About time the government and the community stepped in to stop
this immoral spread of self hate pushed by the "you are inadequate as a person so change in this way and then you'll be loved" industry.

    What the hell?
What is going on with the world today? How can you ban skinny people?
I am natural skinny and find it quite offensive that some people actually assume that I must have some sort of eating disorder, when I definitely do not! I eat what I want and don't put on any weight.
The fashion industry is not going to follow this new "law". They like skinny girls on their catwalks because the clothes hang off them rather than cling to their bodies. They also like slender girls to promote their clothing in the magazines too.
France really needs to get a grip!

This law is not against magazines or médias, it' against specialized web sites who openly promote anorexia.

  45. cate says – reply to this

    245

I think it's ridiculous. How can you disriminate against a body type many many people are just born with. Im naturally as thin as a rake, and have been called anorexic, told to 'eat something' all the time, and have to listen to all the "real women have curves" comments…….it offends me so much. So, thin women arent real? Being over weight carries more health risks, and with more then half of pretty much every western country being over weight or obese, this argument goes out the window. Imagine if they tried to ban 'fat people' from tv…there would be an outrage. Just get the fuck over it and stop persecuting skinny people.

  46. morgane says – reply to this

    246

I do think it is a good idea. Im French and I dont tell that because of my notionality but because we have to struggle against anorexia. I know too many close people who fell in this and it is a real crap. One of my best friend will mot be able to have children because she doesnt have her rules anymore.
I think that the real problem is not that the gorvernment gets involved, but that they have to. But dont worry: there are diferent levels of thinness. I am geniticaly thin, and believe me i dont look like some of these scrawny girls (mostly) who just starve themselves. I do think that pro ana websites should be canceled. This is suicide. Would you like websites promoting cigarets? Dont think so. Well, its exactly the same, worse. Being skinny is not a healthy way of life. Cause there is a gap between thinness and being shinny

    249

From European papers, you get the impression that the law is to be passed mainly to have something in hand legally against all these disgusting pro-ana sites. So I totally am in favor of such law! However, as far as I can see, it will be a lot of pain to decide from where on an "active promotion of anorexia and skinnyness" starts…..

Of course, pro ana sites are in most instances not the reason for the outbreak of the anorectic desease, but to stupid girls and women feeling extremely INSECURE about themselves they can be a means of keeping up the illness and deteriorating it!

  50. German Duckie says – reply to this

    250

    (continued)…

I m therefore in favor of such legislation and wished Germany would do something like that too, or best would be to pass corresponding laws at European Parliament level.
The situation in France has become really EXTREME, the models in GERMAN womens' magazines usually are not quite as skinny as in France.

I guess, maybe most of us have meantime completely lost a sense for what a "normal healthy bodyshape" is! I see this from remarks here about obese people. Nobody asked for the fashion and advertizing industry to go to the other extreme! However, not accepting your natural normal size may very well lead to an eating disorder such as binge eating and will eventually make you really obese! So you fat haters and discriminators who make negative remarks on normal-weight women and men better just shut up!

By the way: It s up to us consumers to boycott clothing companies that promote unnatural thinness and bodies!

The Government is not looking for the difference between 'skinny and not skinny' like Grumbach said. They are looking for extreme cases that would send the wrong messages to the impressionable public. And if those models happen to be too "naturally skinny" and can't help it, then they probably shouldn't be in the spotlight giving off that message, because no one in the public would know if they are skinny from starving themselves or if it's just their natural body type.

it's a brilliant idea! People die from the pressure of needing to be thin.Models have starved themselves to death. I think thats great. Over here in the UK the magazines are obsessed with skinny girls in the media.

I dont think their totally to blame but being shown the same images over and over again of one size has bad affects. However, some girls are naturally that thin, so showing ladies of all shapes and sizes are whats needed.

This is absolutely ridiculous. It's not an intention of media to overtly promote "thinness." It is first our culture, which streams through public expectations and the media. They are all interconnected - but if you look at advertisements directed at women it's saying the following: be skinny and shut up.

And who cares if you are naturally thin….this is a completely different issue

This is a great incentive by a forward-thinking nation (they have also banned all religious symbols including the controversial muslim headgear from their schools). Of course media is to blame - and this should not be downplayed by referring to people who are "naturally skinny".

  68. bevrli says – reply to this

    268

You can mathematically measure thinness by using the Body Mass Index. You can be a healthy thin, then there is unhealthy thin, which is what they are trying to ban. I think this is great, since the average woman is a size 10, not a size 1.

  69. stumbler says – reply to this

this is retarded… and of all the countries… the french? they were always looked up to for their thin, classy women… now they will get fat like the rest of the civilized world. but while they are putting bans on things, why not any business that promotes convenience eating which promotes unhealthy lifestyles and robs family value time such as mc donalds (just to name one). or swimsuit ads that make people run out and get boob jobs that end up getting butchered… or alchohal which gives the illusion of confidense that leads people to stupidity not to mention the potential for driving drunk endangering lives… i used to look up to the french. now they are becoming a tabloid nation.

i'm french and I can say that it's a very good idea.Like you in the usa many people are becoming fat so a lot of magazines (fashion magazines) show us very"thin" models and in my high school (high school for rich people) a lot of girls are suffering from anorexia!we have to STOP it ! so it's not stupid, you ARE STUPID!and don't call us froggis otherwise i will call you Hamburgers!

i don't think this bill will change much and i also think you have to reap what you sow, and by this i mean we've reached quite an intense and scary phase with our civilization; we are paying the price, little girls, too. talk with your daughters about beauty and self and they won't end up a bony mess.

I personally totally agree with this. The fashion industry has so much influence on a woman's body image. They created this monster…. they've fucked with little girls heads for way too long. They've made women feel as though they owe being beautiful to world… that it somehow factors into their self-worth… and that's wrong.

So fuck you Perez, wtf do you mean rightfully so?

  75. Megan says – reply to this

    275

Perez!! I love you, but I think you're a little off this time. This is not too much government control, this is the government stepping in to battle against the sick standard of beauty in the fashion industry! These standards promote eating disorders (I Know, I used to have one) and I am so glad to see some regulations being enforced. Come on Perez, the europeans are waaaaaaaaaay ahead of Americans in almost every other cultural issue, it makes sense that they would be the first to STOP the promotion of starvation to young girls! Get behind them! xoxoxoxo

    Re: jennie

Jeanie, you clearly didn't read the damn bill. THEY ARE NOT FINING SKINNY PEOPLE, OR ANOREXIC PEOPLE. My G-d, how many times do people have to keep pointing this out. They are trying to fine PROMOTION OF EXTREME THINNESS, in Pro-Anorexia websites, editorials, blogs etc. NOBODY IS DISCRIMINATING AGAINST THIN PEOPLE. Beyond that, being skinny & thin is also not the same as being emaciated.

I am glad this bill came up in France. And to F*** France's comment, it is our government going broke, not theirs. Get your geography right idiot. The fashion industry is a sick place in that none of of the clothes are designed for normal sized women. I applaud Europe for trying to go back to the measurements that is on a normal healthy woman. I think it is about time that women all over did not have to strive to be like these stick figures.

    279

wow that is complete bull**** on behalf of the french. there is NO possible way for their law to work, it's ridiculous! you can't just illegalize being thin. some people are naturally thin, and those with eating disorders can't change that fact simply because a law says so. this law exploits tens of thousands of people in France… i can understand cutting back on overly thin images in the magazines and media, but to IMPRISON AND FINE thin people? that's not cool. all i can say is here's another battle the french government is gonna lose… hah

I think that there should be some kind of control over the images portrayed in the media. The French government should do something similar to what Spain did and base a healthy body on the BMI index. I've suffered from eating disorders in the past and it took me years to learn how to treat my body with the respect it deserves, and to develop a healthy relationship with food. I obviously had other things messing with my head that caused these problems, but the constant bombardment of skinny women in the media certainly didn't help. It's so much pressure on regular women to see all these super thin models and actors all the time! And I can only imagine the hell that these celebrities put themselves through in order to be thin. We know so much about health and nutrition these days, and what our bodies need in order to be healthy, it's so sad that people know this and yet still feel the need to ignore it in order to be like the beautiful actresses and models we see everyone fawning over on tv…

    285

    Ok,
Let’s look at this objectively for a moment. I don't necessarily think it should be government enforced but…and it's a BIG BUTT, the fashion industry has been putting weight limits on people forever, it's was just on the opposite end of the scale, if suddenly they are waking up and saying "oh yeah, you now must have at least this BMI as well", what's the big deal? It's just ANOTHER body type they are refusing right? They already refuse the majority of them, and since they won’t do it themselves even though the workers in their industry are DYING because of it then isn't it time for the government to step in? The government does so with other workers rights/worker health hazards, why not this one?

in paris, new york, milan and every other fashion capital they still want their girls extremely skinny. i would know i went to paris for fashion week and didnt work because of it. i dont think the fashion industry will be changing anytime soon. the girls will always be sick looking.

This is the fucking dumbest law ive ever heard of. does that govt have noting better to do than sit around and pick out skinny people to fine? What about people who are naturaly skinny? Maybe while there at it they should fine over weight people too. they have an extreamly high death rate because they are too big! Millions more in deaths every year compared to someone who is too skinny. THINK ABOUT HOW FUCKING DUMB IT SOUNDS!

Re: kala – Kayla, as someone who works in the area of eating disorders pro-ana groups are not support groups they are groups designed to keep individuals in their illness (ways to hide your ED from your family, how to reduce caloric intake, better methods for purging), pro-ana and pro-mia are not about emotional support and helping people get better. Research proves that the sooner people get help for an ED the better the chance for recovery. And the media and society do play a role in this, although they do not directly cause EDs they do lead to poor body image and low self-esteem which can lead to eating disorders

I think this is completely stupid. I am a recovering anorexic and bulimic and do not blame the media at all for my illness. Eating disorders are not that shallow. The reasons for them go much deeper than what is in a magazine. Media may play a small roll, but things such as abuse, neglect, trauma, etc. play a bigger roll. I was anorexic, but not because I wanted to be skinny like a model. And if the french are going to pass this law, they should also pass the same sort of thing banning overweight people in the media. Yes, you can be overweight and healthy, but you can also be UNDERweight and healthy as well. Either understand that or be balanced and fair and ban both.

i tink dis is brilliant! ders websites pushing young girls to loose weight and to look a certain way, let me remind everyone that anorexia is a cultural issue, and media is a big part.
its not that hard to see if a woman is starving herself of is naturally thin even if the naturally skinny and the sick skinny person look the same same. certain people are just built diffrently-

    296

I think its fantastic idea. Hope they encourage it over here and in the US. And yes, the media is largely to blame. Youngs girls, women, look at models and magazines and think that if they want to look as good in the product they're hawking, they will have to be as thin as them- and they are usually underweight. A judge will not decide whether a girl looks skinny or not. The scales will decide! If a model has a BMI under 19, she clearly has a problem!

I really am bothered that they are going to single out the thin people and make laws to punish just them. I want to see them punish people who are to fat as well then. Being really heavy or fat is just as bad if not worse!!! I have always hated the fact that fat people are accepted over all poor health issues actaully. I hate is more than anything when I see some big fat pig going on and on about like smoking or drug use etc… What right to they have to go on and on about whats healthy and what isn't when being really overweight is BAD!!!!!! They are risking heart attacks, diabeties, and so much more. Being severely overwheight is NOT OK!! I want all the fat pigs out there that continue to stuff their faces every day to be punished as well. They know that they are not taking care of themselves and yet they cont. to OVER EAT. So by punishing the thin and not the fat that in itself is sending the message that it is ok to be fat on top of it. You can't tell me that it isn't. Being fat to me is worse than being to thin. At least a thin person is in control of how much they eat, some people would say that that is not true but I say that it is. At least they can stop themselves from being a totla fucken pig. Give me a break!! It isn't fair to punish one and not the other, PERIOD!!!!!!
