First, Oprah's beloved Cocker Spaniel Sophie passed away late last month.

Now, Martha Stewart's Chow Chow, named Paw Paw, passed away this Sunday, Martha reports on her official blog.

Paw Paw was 12 years old when he passed.

We can't imagine ever losing Teddy!

Our condolences to Martha.

Paw Paw: I will miss him

As many of you know, my beloved dog, Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow Chow, was not feeling well in recent weeks and I am very heart-broken to announce his passing last Saturday, April 12, 2008 as he was approaching his 13th year. Paw Paw was a spectacular chow and an even more spectacular dog. He was always my loyal companion, displaying the most agreeable temperament. Paw Paw loved traveling with me and was always a willing model for the camera. In addition to taking part in television commercials and several national print ads, he has been part of numerous photo shoots and is a familiar face on my television show, in my magazine, and on this blog. Paw Paw’s veterinarians, Dr. Thomas Marsh of Fairfield, CT and Dr. Marty Goldstein of South Salem, NY also admired his easy-going nature, and caring for him was never a chore. Even in his final days, Paw Paw just stopped eating and drifted off to deep sleeps, where he now rests peacefully, and, I’m most confident, quite happily. I will miss him, always.

So sad. Pets really are like family members and it's heartbreaking when they pass. :(

Re: Lisa – The dog's not dead in the picture. Is that what you're saying? It's not creepy at all.

Did anyone else notice that this was a much more touching note than the one she wrote when her mom died?

This really breaks my heart, I know what it is like to lose a beloved pet that's like a member of your family. To many of us, our pets are like soul mates, helping us survive through the most difficult, sad and trying times of our lives. They are always there to celebrate the joys or lick away your tears. Always loyal to the end. Just having them by our side is the greatest comfort in the world. Pure uncomplicated love and devotion. My deepest sympathy to Martha on her loss. I know that Martha had great love and admiration for her Paw Paw and he surely had a wonderful life with her.

This is so sad. Her Chow was just adorable. I lost 2 dogs in the past 2 years to different types of cancer and it was heartbreaking for me and my family. So sorry Martha for your loss. The best advice for anyone is to remember your pet in better times and if you do have other pets spend a bit more time with them. Keep your head up Martha!

Re: Chris – You know why people hate humans? Because most of them suck ass. Animals are much kinder, not judgemental, provide unconditional love and companionship and ask NOTHING in return. Unlike greedy selfish willful people who do horrible things and lie and cheat. That's why. No one is discounting the value of a human life, but this is about an animal and they are far superior to any human I have ever met.

Re: jet – I totally respect your opinion, and in no way would I want to try to change it. I just think it's really upsetting that you have never met a human who has touched you more than an animal has. Animals and pets are awesome, and they have provided me with many great moments, but if I ever had to chose a family member, or a friend, or a co-worker over one of them, I would do it in a second.

This must be wicked sad for Martha, and believe me, I feel for her. I just felt like pointing out that Perez has said such nasty things about the elderly of this country who have so little time left and need the most love, yet cries over someone's dog passing away.

I must admit, however, I was happy to see the post today about Alzheimer's research. That was a very great post, and an even better cause.

It just drives me crazy when people say they love their cats and the follow that with the fact that their cat was "hit by a car". If you love them so much, then keep them inside where they are out of harms way. I"m really tired of dodging dead carcasses on the road and I'm really tired of trying to dodge darting cats in the road and putting my own life at risk in the process. If your animal is hit by a car because you consider them "outdoor" animals, I don't feel sorry for you.

I have a Chow Chow named Ebony and she's 10. I will be facing Martha's tragedy soon enough and my condolences go out to her.

Our pets are like our children and we love them. My heart started to break when my Ebony started to lose some of her hearing and to limp from arthritis. She's better now, thanks to medicine, but the inevitible will still come someday. Until then, we continue to love her.

Re: booboo – Wow. I feel sorry for you. You're apparently a very bitter person.

Why post at all if you've nothing relevant to say about this subject? Must make you feel good inside to be so hateful?
