Homeless amputee beaten to death with own crutch
SAN DIEGO – A homeless amputee was beaten to death with his own crutch Monday night on a downtown sidewalk.
Several witnesses reported that the 41-year-old victim had gotten into an argument with another man on F Street near Eighth Avenue in the Core-Columbia neighborhood just before midnight, homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney said.
During the fight the man picked up the victim's crutch and hit him with it, said Rooney.
Paramedics tried to revive him but he died about a hour later at a trauma center.
The attacker was described as Latino and in his 30s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds with a mustache and a sparse beard, Rooney said.
He was last seen near Seventh Avenue and G Street.
Police said they don't know why the men were arguing, if they knew each other or the motive for the attack.
The dead man's name has not yet been released. Rooney said he had an amputated leg and used a wheelchair but also was able to stand. He was standing when he was hit with the crutch, he said.
The man was known to stay in an alcove in front of the building where the fight took place.

I know this is wrong, but all I could picture was Seinfeld and thinking that if the homeless man had a wooden leg he would have been beaten with it. I know, I'm going straight to hell. In all honesty, my condolences to the family.

If they are immigrants, they do no want to do anything that would have them deported. As any group, though, Latinos have their typical share of the criminal element. This perp could be 4th generation U.S., or could even be from Europe. It would be more accurate to blame impulse, anger and testosterone or mental health issues than finger point at race. If you want to race blame, then you have an agenda.

A homeless guy sleeping on the street where I live was just beaten to death during the night. If you put yourself out where these individuals frequent, you take your chances. People on the street are about survival.

I would never condone anything like this, but we need to hear the other side of the story first. I have been downtown in my city MANY times when I am approached by very intimidating homeless people who won't take no for an answer. Don't fool yourself, either. Just because he was missing a leg doesn't mean he was less threatening…
