Gibraltar to kill "molesting" monkeys

A pack of at least 25 of Gibraltar's famous monkeys are being killed because they are threatening human health in one of The Rock's popular tourism areas, a government minister said on Tuesday.

Two of the monkeys — a national symbol for the British colony at the foot of Spain — have already been given a lethal injection, said Gibraltar's Tourist Minister Ernest Britto who issued the license for their culling.

"The decision was not taken lightly," he said. "It is a last resort."

Gibraltar's residents have long lived alongside the monkeys or macaques, but Britto said the behavior of one pack had got out-of-hand in Catalan Bay and Sandy Bay, two popular tourist areas on The Rock.

"Children are frightened, people cannot leave their windows open for fear of the monkeys stealing, apes can bite and contact with them runs the risk of salmonella or hepatitis," said Britto.

Last month, Britto told Gibraltar's parliament that once the cull of 25 macaques is completed the overall monkey population would be set at around 200.

The cull will take time since the monkeys must be lured into cages and then sedated before killing, he said.

Gibraltar has been running a birth control problem to control the monkey population for about six years but the programme is taking time to work.

Franco Ostuni, general manager of the Caleta Hotel, said guests rooms have been vandalized by monkeys scrounging for extra food.

"What has to stop is the damage that apes are doing to Gibraltar, private properties and individuals without anyone taking responsibility for it," he said.

However, the International Primate Protection League said it was considering calling on tourists to boycott Gibraltar if the local government did not stop the cull.

"It is clear that the Government of Gibraltar is still not managing their population of macaques in a responsible manner, despite the fact that they undoubtedly boost the nation's economy as arguably their most popular tourist attraction," said Helen Thirlway, head of IPPL in the UK.

    106

Yeah, so I wrote my thesis on these monkeys- spent two summers following them around, no less. The only reason the monkeys are going down into the hotel area is because some of the staff there kept *feeding* them.

Something people forget is that the monkeys aren't in a zoo, they're wild animals that just happen to live really, really close to humans. If humans bring fatty or starchy foods to the monkeys, they're going to come back to humans to get more. And if tourists are dumb enough to eat snickers bars or ice cream while standing in the middle of a pack of monkeys, it's their own damn fault if the monkeys take it from them.

And if you're *really* dumb and try to get it back, they will bite you. Plain and simple

  7. Paul says – reply to this

    107

Oh, and if you're a *really* dumb american tourist, and put a peanut down your pants so that a monkey will come close and you can take a funny photo, don't be surprised when *it actually reaches into your pants and causes serious damage*.

I still can't believe someone was dumb enough to try that

I went to Gibraltar in December of 2007. The monkeys are one of the only reasons that I went to Gibraltar. We had our tour guide feed the monkeys to take pictures with our group. If they kill them, they are going to lose tourism becuase Gibraltar has little to offer anyways.

you are such an ass hole, the monkeys haven't done anything wrong if you want to blame some one for the way we are trating our own, blame yourself we are the ones resposable for being somtimes a disgusting greedy "human" beings. it shows what kind of nature you are made if you aren't kind for the innocent.

It doesnt say they were molesting anyone you fat fuck….and they wouldnt be there if their fucking homes werent being taken and made into stupid human structures…if you ask me humans deserve what they get when it comes to an animal getting revenge…GO MONKIES!!!!

    113

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I have visited and photographed these monkeys in person. They are incredibly beautiful and funny and fascinating, and it would be a tragedy for any of them to be euthanized for ANY reason. Humans encroached upon THEIR territory, not the other way around. Oh, and NEWS FLASH: If you bought a house next to a colony of monkeys, you sort of forfeit the right to leave your windows open. Deal with it and let the monkeys live.

Legend has it that when the last monkey is gone from Gibraltar, the British lose their rule there.

this is so wrong man. first we destroy these monkeys homes, then we expect these animals not to try to survive and just starve?now, a few idiots who have a stick up there ass start complaining about the monkeys trying to EAT and now the goverment is stepping in with fair and unusual punishment to MURDER our close relatives. If people werent so selfcentered they would realize this god dammit.

I don't blame the fucking monkeys I blame you selfabsorbed cunts who care more about animals than human beings. Go fuck yourself.

Re: Nour – I hate humans, couldnt care less if we are killed. We deserve it. We are the most cruel, barbaric disgusting species who have destroyed this planet, other animals and are one of the few species that have no problem killing our own. I would save a monkey, cat, dog, bird etc etc over a human any day. In fact the human species is way over populated too, lets cull humans while we are at it.

    Re: Nour
Who are you refering to when you say the 'same authorities'. The Gibraltarian authorities have never shot any African people trying to get into Gibraltar. That's ludicrous. You might be thinking of the SPANISH dictator Franco and that happened a good 50-60 years ago.

  22. Nour says – reply to this

    122

Re: Naomi – No, not 50-60 years ago: 2-3 years ago. Watch the news. There are still african boat-people dying every day, trying to get into fucking fortress Europe to escape from miserable living conditions, war or persecution. And yet people here choose to close their eyes and get all upset about cute little monkeys rather than acknowledge the horrible suffering that 3rd world populations have to go through. It's pathetic.

Re: Nour – I agree with you. I'm not sure if it was specifically in Gibraltar or somewhere else close by in the same border region between Europe and Marocco, but yeah: They opened fire on 400 people that day, several died. And it's not the first time this happens, there's a list on noborder.org/dead.php
    Sucks.

    125

Aww, poor monkeys! I think they have this same problem in India and Thailand with similar macaques/apes who hang around the Buddhist temples. Stinky little rascals. Why can't they just catch them and sterilize them, then release them back to the wild, like they do with feral cats.

    126

Yes I can openly admit and I have been personally attacked by those hate mongers. Don't get me wrong I am 6foot 4 and 200 hunderd plus. But if it has not happened to you, you have no rite to an opinion. I still have nitemares about that day many years ago. It has an adverse effect on my life. Picture this years of counsiling. If I see a monkey
I shat myself and fall to the ground in tears and tremors. If we dont get controll of them they will spawn more hatered. They must be delt with people. In this world gone mad we wont spank the monkey the monkey will spank us

  27. FU says – reply to this

    127

Its unfortunate but I can see the necessity in controlling the agressiveness and population of the monkeys. When I went to South Africa, I stayed in a resort where monkeys came onto the property. We were at the pool and there were several monkeys roaming b/c they were digging for food in the trash. One was brave enough to come up to the foot of my lounger. I tried to shoo it and it showed me its teeth and screamed at me. My friend stood up and yelled at it and it ran away. I was terrified that it was going to bite me and I might get some sort of disease. Also, we were told to keep our doors and windows to our rooms closed when we weren't in them. The monkeys would go into open windows/doors and demolish the rooms.

"Children are frightened, people cannot leave their windows open for fear of the monkeys stealing, apes can bite and contact with them runs the risk of salmonella or hepatitis,"

This is one HELL of an exaggeration. I have lived in Gibraltar all of my life and i've never had a single problem with any of these apes. Sure they come down from the rock into town and catalan bay from tiem to time, if you leave food by your window they'll take it, your own damn fault. And for all the people who complain that they have had their sunglasses or whatever stolen by an Ape then tough shit i'm afraid, it will happen everywhere. I have NEVER heard of anybody being hurt by any of these apes, nor have I heard of hotel rooms or homes being trashed. But if people think its ok to kill animals which don't understand what they are doing because they are so stupid that clearly materialistic things are far more important than the welfare of an animal, then they can do what they like and regret it in the end. Thanks to the Gibraltarian government for making us all look like a bunch of ape murderers who live in fear.

WHAT RESPECT DO YOU HAVE? YOU DON'T CARE FOR THE LAW, RULES OR NATURE YOU NEDD TO SHUT THE FUCK UP FROM HERE AND GO AND HELP THOSE AFRICANS !"WICH YOU SO MUCH CARE".

  33. paige says – reply to this

    133

Why do they have to kill them? Can't they just move them to an uninhabited area?

  34. T says – reply to this

    134

So let me get this straight, man invades animals home, man thinks animals are cute and probably starts to feed them, etc, animal gets used to humans and start to treat humans like fellow animals, therefore humans must kill animals rather than remove them. Makes me ashamed to be human.

I went to Gilbratar this past summer and the apes were what made the area so special. If they decided to do the humane thing and deal with the problem differently, I would understand that but this is ludicrous. The apes have been there a very long time and people have learned to deal with them for all of that time, they are a natural part of the area. This just goes to show how people deal with nature's problems try to kill them off or bury it just like global warming. We are all doomed to extinction unless we get some people with vision and a new point of view in office. I pray for us all.

i would like to say that i am from gibraltar, the fact that these actions are being carried out disgusted me, i have only now heard about these "molesting" apes, i'll tell you, i live right up the rock, there’s always been random groups of apes wondering in and around, i've even once had one come in my house, but never have i thought it nessorcery for any of them to be killed.
this is just a way for the rubbish excuse for a government we have to look as though they are actually doing something, when really they're not.

As a personal friend of the macaques I feel it is important to be honest and ultimately truthful.
Although it is not intentional the monkeys molest as a stress response to the constant barrage of paparazzi. Please vote for the little monkey Kiki or Koko. They appreciate your support so send bananas and know that your donation will be ignored by the Government of Gilbraltar as they have admitted to allowing the monkeys full reign of the hotels and hotspots the tourist skank around for a little monkey nibble and primate poopy. From the bottom of someone's
    heart thank you.
