Aliza Shvarts, a Yale art major, has done something different for her senior art project this year.
The "artist" has documented herself throughout a 9 month process where she artificially inseminated herself and then periodically took abortifacient drugs in order to induce miscarriages.
The exhibit, which will begin next Tuesday, will include video recordings of the forced miscarriages.

It will also include preserved samples of the blood during the process.
According to Shvarts, her goal was to "spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body."
Students have expressed shock upon hearing of the exhibit. Rightfully so!
Shvarts insists that her art isn't for shock value. Liar. She says, "I hope it inspires some sort of discourse. Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it's not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone."
As for the "donors", she claims they were not paid for their "services". She also claims to have required them to periodically take tests for STDs, though did not want to disclose the number of sperm donors used.
As for the medical risk related to multiple abortions, Shvarts says she was not worried. She said the abortifacient drugs she took were herbal and legal, and decided she didn't need to consult a doctor.

At least this "artist" has one fan. Juan Castillo, another senior art major, said he was intrigued by the beauty of her project. He says, "I really loved the idea of this project, but a lot other people didn't. I think that most people were very resistant to thinking about what the project was really about. [The senior-art-project forum] stopped being a conversation on the work itself."
As for the actual exhibit, Schvarts will feature a large cube hanging from the ceiling. Wrapped around that cube will be hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting which will be lined with her blood from the miscarriages.

She will also project the recorded videos of herself, showing the miscarriages she had in her bathtub, onto the sides of the cube.
Similar footage will also be projected onto the walls of the room.

Shvarts adds, "It was a private and personal endeavor, but also a transparent one for the most part. This isn't something I've been hiding." Adding, that she believes "strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity. I think that I'm creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be."
We're all for a woman's right to choose, but this is abusing that right.

this goes beyond abusing a woman's right to choose–this makes a mockery of it.
i think she should definitely be arrested for this. it should never be allowed for a woman to become pregnant for the only purpose of aborting the fetus. this is such an abuse of life, the human body, and the definition of art.

I think it's completely different to have an abortion (which I do not belive in) because you were raped, or way way too young, blah blah blah. In my opinion, I think it's one thing to abort an unplanned, surprise pregnancy. It is quite another to PLAN and abort a pregnancy. And this woman didn't stop at just one. She did this several times over a 9 month period. How disgusting and despicable. This is not an artist, this is a woman who planned to kill. Isn't that what defines a murderer? There are PLENTY of studies and information out there about how a woman's body handles abortion and miscarriage. What a SICKENING excuse to murder innocent embryos and fetuses, not to mention the harm this woman did to her own body. She will ultimately get what she deserves, weather it's in this life or the next.
I am pretty liberal, I believe in women's rights. I would considered myself Pro Choice but this is appalling. WHen a women chooses to have an abortion due to her incapacity to bring a child into this world is acceptable, a woman who was raped is acceptable, a young teenager who makes a mistake is borderline acceptable, but a woman who purposely gets pregnant just to have abortions is beyond disgusting.

art is whatever it wants to be, and its not up to you or anyone else to define what is and isn't art! people were shocked and outraged by DaVinci dissecting dead bodies for his exploration of anatomy during the renaissance. She is certainly taking control of her reproductive rights in an aggressive way to fuel intense discussion, but that is and should be her right to do so. Its her body, and if the donors of the rest of the genetic material involved don't protest to that use of it, then I don't see a problem. Obviuosly its not a pretty sweet project, and will not be appreciated by the squeamish or religious, but clearly its not meant to please peoples aesthetics. Personally I find people out in crowded non-kid-friendly shops and restaurants with three screaming toddlers and another on the way offensive!

I think this is actually pretty retarded and played out - I'm an artist too, but seriously you can't think of anything else daring, to make art about? She must not be that intelligent or interesting that she has to revert to this kind of "work" to make.

I am a pro choice woman. However two months ago I lost my pregnancy at 8 weeks. At my 8 week ultra sound I saw its tiny head. At 5 weeks it has a heartbeat. How can you say that is not a human? How anyone can do this repeatedly to themselves for fun is inhumane. Someday if she hasnt ruined her body and has a baby she will look back on this and be disgusted. I think it is interesting how the most commonly used phrases, "bitch," "disgusting," "ewww," "how fucked up/wrong/sick," and the list goes on. Obviously Shvarts' project is not igniting anything more than anger and nausea from her audiences. My immediate reaction, however, is not necessarily to judge what Shvart purportedly claims to have done, but to talk more about what you said at the end: "We're all for the right for a woman to choose, but this is abusing that right." I'm not here to comment on what art should/should not do, because I believe that art is always potentially subversive; what I'm reacting to is how Shvarts' project tarnishes public attitudes about feminism and the right to choose. It seems to me that Shvarts' project is proving exactly what critics of feminism and pro-choice expect. In this way, her radicalization of abortion as a political weapon provokes the wrong kind of attention. Her incredibly controversial methods seem to take us 1 step forward, and 3 step backwards in terms of women's rights. Her project only confirms what pro-life supporters and anti-feminists expect, and that is precisely why I disagree with the "political" and "ideological" aims of Shvart's project.
