Aliza Shvarts, a Yale art major, has done something different for her senior art project this year.
The "artist" has documented herself throughout a 9 month process where she artificially inseminated herself and then periodically took abortifacient drugs in order to induce miscarriages.
The exhibit, which will begin next Tuesday, will include video recordings of the forced miscarriages.

It will also include preserved samples of the blood during the process.
According to Shvarts, her goal was to "spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body."
Students have expressed shock upon hearing of the exhibit. Rightfully so!
Shvarts insists that her art isn't for shock value. Liar. She says, "I hope it inspires some sort of discourse. Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it's not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone."
As for the "donors", she claims they were not paid for their "services". She also claims to have required them to periodically take tests for STDs, though did not want to disclose the number of sperm donors used.
As for the medical risk related to multiple abortions, Shvarts says she was not worried. She said the abortifacient drugs she took were herbal and legal, and decided she didn't need to consult a doctor.

At least this "artist" has one fan. Juan Castillo, another senior art major, said he was intrigued by the beauty of her project. He says, "I really loved the idea of this project, but a lot other people didn't. I think that most people were very resistant to thinking about what the project was really about. [The senior-art-project forum] stopped being a conversation on the work itself."
As for the actual exhibit, Schvarts will feature a large cube hanging from the ceiling. Wrapped around that cube will be hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting which will be lined with her blood from the miscarriages.

She will also project the recorded videos of herself, showing the miscarriages she had in her bathtub, onto the sides of the cube.
Similar footage will also be projected onto the walls of the room.

Shvarts adds, "It was a private and personal endeavor, but also a transparent one for the most part. This isn't something I've been hiding." Adding, that she believes "strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity. I think that I'm creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be."
We're all for a woman's right to choose, but this is abusing that right.

I think this is a real total disregard for women who have been in difficult situations and had to go for the option of abortion or even lost a baby through miscarriage. It's a tough choice and she's treating it likes it's no big deal Whether you are for or against abortion it's not a nice thing to have to do, I hope I never have to have one but if I did, I would think this big decision through a lot more than she obviously had. It has an emotional lasting effect on women.
What a shame that this can be considered art. Not to mention that she is giving every pro lifer ammunition to start another war on a womans choice… What a waste. Truly a waste

I cannot say where I stand on the entire abortion issue. I don't believe in it, but I have been a party to one. When a girl I impregnated had an abortion. I will teach my children responsibility, to cherish life and to be compationate. I believe it is a stupid subject for politicians and other leaders to bring it to the forefront of our society.
I am not one to judge what other people do, but teach what I believe to my family.

This really upsets me. I believe that Art is an even evolving form that takes several different outlets. However this pushes the line, I am completly pro-choice but this is not at all an issue of being pro-choice or pro-life. This is straight up murder. I am currently studying abroad in copenhagen, denmark and a very famous art piece was was held here in the 70's when a woman murderd a horse. I think this is the same idea. Trying to push the boundries to a place they have never been. It is true that this may be the point of art but people have done that since the 1800's without any lives being ruined. Think op Duchamp's "fountain" he put a urnial on the wall and shook up the art world by pushing the limit. And hey no one died. What a lazy bitch.

Christ, i'm going to art college next year in London, and hopefully one day I want to be famous for my art. But if this is the type of thing you have to do to get attention, then what chance do the actual talented people have at making it big?

It is ONE thing to be pro-choice, however it a problem when one creates abortion as a means to something else. In the artists case, abortion was habitual and was used as a means to call it "art." Some things are not meant to be "art." Do people do medically dangerous things/criminal things and take pictures of it to call it art? Aside from an unnecessary series of abortions, what about the life of the child and the lives of the men involved and their families? Someone's granchild was aborted for the sake of this girl's art project.
If this reasoning is type of reasoning is correct, would you like to be operated on for some type of problem and have people taking pictures of you calling it art? This is wrong. The phrase "I'm all for the right to choose, but…" should NEVER be said. You can't abuse a right. Human rights are there for an undeniable reason. Her body, her choices. It is unjust to take away the right to abort.
This is a bad example of one woman's choices, but it was done for sensationalism and the loosest meaning of the word "art". This woman's an idiot, and should be given mental help. I love your site. I have never before been at such lost for words. As a nurse it is my job to advocate for my patient whatever their choice is. but, this is boyond anything. Abortion, wherever you fall on the argument is a difficult choice to make. To make a joke of it is horrible. I have held the hands of woman who agonize over the desion that they have to make. To make a spectical of it is gross and she really should do some soul searching before going ahead with this.
