Aliza Shvarts, a Yale art major, has done something different for her senior art project this year.
The "artist" has documented herself throughout a 9 month process where she artificially inseminated herself and then periodically took abortifacient drugs in order to induce miscarriages.
The exhibit, which will begin next Tuesday, will include video recordings of the forced miscarriages.

It will also include preserved samples of the blood during the process.
According to Shvarts, her goal was to "spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body."
Students have expressed shock upon hearing of the exhibit. Rightfully so!
Shvarts insists that her art isn't for shock value. Liar. She says, "I hope it inspires some sort of discourse. Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it's not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone."
As for the "donors", she claims they were not paid for their "services". She also claims to have required them to periodically take tests for STDs, though did not want to disclose the number of sperm donors used.
As for the medical risk related to multiple abortions, Shvarts says she was not worried. She said the abortifacient drugs she took were herbal and legal, and decided she didn't need to consult a doctor.

At least this "artist" has one fan. Juan Castillo, another senior art major, said he was intrigued by the beauty of her project. He says, "I really loved the idea of this project, but a lot other people didn't. I think that most people were very resistant to thinking about what the project was really about. [The senior-art-project forum] stopped being a conversation on the work itself."
As for the actual exhibit, Schvarts will feature a large cube hanging from the ceiling. Wrapped around that cube will be hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting which will be lined with her blood from the miscarriages.

She will also project the recorded videos of herself, showing the miscarriages she had in her bathtub, onto the sides of the cube.
Similar footage will also be projected onto the walls of the room.

Shvarts adds, "It was a private and personal endeavor, but also a transparent one for the most part. This isn't something I've been hiding." Adding, that she believes "strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity. I think that I'm creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be."
We're all for a woman's right to choose, but this is abusing that right.

Abortion as art is extremely appalling. Aliza Shvarts should be prosecuted for the murder of an unborn child. There is a huge difference between having an abortion due to medical necessity or the safety of the mother and getting pregnant for the sole purpose of having an abortion. A prestigious educational institution such as Yale, should have stopped this madness when Ms. Shvarts first proposed her senior art project. As decribed above, her exhibit evicerates the concept of artistic freedom and is, in fact, the poster child for obsenity.
It is apparant that she openly and sadistically mocks a woman's right to choose. Those that must exercise it, do not take the decision lightly and are often scrred emotionally for having to make the decision.
I agree with on of the other posts, that she needs some serious counseling as do those who find any "artistic" value in this condemnation of life.

As a very, very, very strong pro-choice Artist. I find Shvarts abuse to her body completely sickening. Being a female Artist, who deals with similar issues, there is a fine line between making art that expresses the feminine struggle and going for shock vaule to carry your voice. I find her work completely sophomoric and offensive. It is very common to find art to be self-observed, but this piece doesn't allow the veiwer an option to find a deeper level and connect to in in any way. Conceptually it's a farce and underestimates the intelligence of not only the veiwer, but the Artist also.

How is she not being charged with murder? There is a huge difference between a woman's right to choose, and what this girl has done. She had the INTENT OF KILLING THE BABIES every time she inseminated herself. Wouldn't a psychologist testify that's some kind of sick behavior? I'm all for freedom of speech and whatnot, but this really crosses the line. Not only is it really unnecessary (I dont feel like she was really making any kind of point), but it undermines the risks associated with abortions for other people who dont know a lot about it and may see this. Also, if she wants abortion to stay legal and out of the media, this was a really bad idea. Some conservative group is going to pick this up as an excuse to make abortion illegal, which is not fair to people who turn to this option as a necessity for health or medical reasons. I also feel bad for this girl, she obviously has some emotional/mental problems and probably didnt get a lot of attention as a child and now has to stage these kind of things to make up for it.
