"It's Not A Hoax!"

abortion.jpg

Aliza Shvarts, in her own words.

"For the past year, I performed repeated self-induced miscarriages. I created a group of fabricators from volunteers who submitted to periodic STD screenings and agreed to their complete and permanent anonymity. From the 9th to the 15th day of my menstrual cycle, the fabricators would provide me with sperm samples, which I used to privately self-inseminate. Using a needleless syringe, I would inject the sperm near my cervix within 30 minutes of its collection, so as to insure the possibility of fertilization. On the 28th day of my cycle, I would ingest an abortifacient, after which I would experience cramps and heavy bleeding.

To protect myself and others, only I know the number of fabricators who participated, the frequency and accuracy with which I inseminated and the specific abortifacient I used. Because of these measures of privacy, the piece exists only in its telling. This telling can take textual, visual, spatial, temporal and performative forms — copies of copies of which there is no original.

This piece — in its textual and sculptural forms — is meant to call into question the relationship between form and function as they converge on the body. The artwork exists as the verbal narrative you see above, as an installation that will take place in Green Hall, as a time-based performance, as a independent concept, as a myth and as a public discourse.

It creates an ambiguity that isolates the locus of ontology to an act of readership. An intentional ambiguity pervades both the act and the objects I produced in relation to it. The performance exists only as I chose to represent it. For me, the most poignant aspect of this representation — the part most meaningful in terms of its political agenda (and, incidentally, the aspect that has not been discussed thus far) — is the impossibility of accurately identifying the resulting blood. Because the miscarriages coincide with the expected date of menstruation (the 28th day of my cycle), it remains ambiguous whether the there was ever a fertilized ovum or not. The reality of the pregnancy, both for myself and for the audience, is a matter of reading.

This ambivalence makes obvious how the act of identification or naming — the act of ascribing a word to something physical — is at its heart an ideological act, an act that literally has the power to construct bodies. In a sense, the act of conception occurs when the viewer assigns the term “miscarriage” or “period” to that blood.

In some sense, neither term is exactly accurate or inaccurate; the ambiguity is not merely a matter of context, but is embodied in the physicality of the object. This central ambiguity defies a clear definition of the act. The reality of miscarriage is very much a linguistic and political reality, an act of reading constructed by an act of naming — an authorial act.

It is the intention of this piece to destabilize the locus of that authorial act, and in doing so, reclaim it from the heteronormative structures that seek to naturalize it.

As an intervention into our normative understanding of “the real” and its accompanying politics of convention, this performance piece has numerous conceptual goals. The first is to assert that often, normative understandings of biological function are a mythology imposed on form. It is this mythology that creates the sexist, racist, ableist, nationalist and homophobic perspective, distinguishing what body parts are “meant” to do from their physical capability. The myth that a certain set of functions are “natural” (while all the other potential functions are “unnatural”) undermines that sense of capability, confining lifestyle choices to the bounds of normatively defined narratives.

Just as it is a myth that women are “meant” to be feminine and men masculine, that penises and vaginas are “meant” for penetrative heterosexual sex (or that mouths, anuses, breasts, feet or leather, silicone, vinyl, rubber, or metal implements are not “meant” for sex at all), it is a myth that ovaries and a uterus are “meant” to birth a child.

When considering my own bodily form, I recognize its potential as extending beyond its ability to participate in a normative function. While my organs are capable of engaging with the narrative of reproduction — the time-based linkage of discrete events from conception to birth — the realm of capability extends beyond the bounds of that specific narrative chain. These organs can do other things, can have other purposes, and it is the prerogative of every individual to acknowledge and explore this wide realm of capability."

If she has no idea if she was or wasn't pregnant, then how can she say she was "inducing miscarriages"? Unless she took a blood or urine test to see if she was pregnant, then more than likely she was just collecting her period blood, holding it up as miscarriage blood - and looking REALLY stupid and idiotic to the world. Using big words doesn't necessarily make you smart - it just shows you know how to use a dictionary.

Perez you and the rest of the media are giving her a sounding board. Stop talking about her so that she may not attempt to do anything else like this ever again. Just think if she would have gotten pregs. and was unable to miscarry and this poor child grows up with all kinds of mental and physical problems. She is selfish and Yale should be ashamed to be associated with her. Please stop!

Re: anonymous to the max – I 100 percent agree with you! I was thinking to myself this whole time as an artist what kind of name does that give the rest of us. To me it's nothing more than a science project and what bothers me the most is that they call it "art"

    311

Re: cambel – Thank you, I thought she may have Aspergers disease. She used 500 dollar words throughout her whole inside out and backwards rant. That was so uncalled for. And realistically, she said NOTHING.

    You said nothing, girl.

Yale is supposed to be prestigiuous, you obvioously got in because you write good papers, but you're cleary uninformed and slow.

I understand you want to be "different", and you "see" things others can't, but I can, and how you go about expressing yourself, being selfish and mutilating your body is just wrong.

This was wrong, and there's no excuse that will make it OK…especially not "ART'!

    314

It doesn't matter how she spins her twisted acts into seeming like art —>This is NOT art. She, like many in the Yale art department, are complete morons…she is a moron of sociopathic proportions. This is the dumbest "project" one could ever imagine possible of "conception". She should be expelled, and if not, should reconsider her title of "artist".

    Re: d.c. lez – That's not art!
What is wrong with you people?
    You know what art is?
Art is when you're in elememntry school, and the teacher gives you paint, markers, paper, glue, scissors, plaster, and pencils.

Art is when you act, write poetry, and fashion something spectacular out of a material.

Art is not making your body bleed.
Blood is your life fluid! How irresponsible is it to tell future artist that draining your life fluid–wereas you can die, and become infertile–is art?
    Ridiculous.

What she did is an excuse to perform harm to herself, that's all. She is making the wrong statement. No one can see what she tried to do because 98% of us thinks she is psycho for the thought, forget the act, sheesh..

Dear Ms. Crazy Bitch: umm okay, obviously your smart and rich or you would not be in Yale, To sit there and use such large words (which i do happen to know the meanings of) only makes you look stupid for the reason that you are trying to make youself sound smarter than the reader and probably smarter than you really are, who speaks in ths manner????? NO ONE!. It is so offensive, your offensive and this whole idea of yours is actually quite ridiculous. If you were so smart then you would know that is the stupidest thing you could do to your self.

Sincerly a smarter person than you!

    Re: Jill
Wow, Jill, if you really think that that's all ovaries exists for, you should run to your nearest bookstore, get yourself a copy of "Our Bodies, Ourselves' and start reading about yours.
Ovaries, like most other parts of our bodies have a primary role in assisting reproduction and a secondary role in facilitating the dist. of hormones…they are an integral part of not one, but two major biological systems-reproductive and endocrine-they exist to do alot more than simply produce eggs.
I think this project is an excellent "teaching" moment myself.

  22. Sara says – reply to this

    322

I'm pretty sure my ovaries and uterus are there for reproductive reasons. The only art I see in them is if drawn it looks like a cows head. Breasts are meant to feed babies too. I think she might be the offspring of that couple in Australia, you know, the dad and the daughter who are married and doin' it.

  29. Catherine says – reply to this

    329

If she really did do this, she needs serious psychological help. That's the most disgusting thing I've ever heard, she is literally PLAYING with life and death. No 'art' (and I use that word extremely loosely in this context) is worth what she is putting herself, and other women who have suffered miscarriages who genuinely wanted children, through.

  30. BB says – reply to this

    330

With a face like that no one else but herself would fuck her, guess she needs some attention, probably the first time in her life. Quit posting about her, that's disgusting. I'd rather see potato head.

    335

Typical liberal gobblety gook. Bottom line: this woman is so far up her own ass it's laughable. I truly hope she was never pregnant, but it's ironic she's calling her "brave political acts" miscarriages instead of what they really are: abortions. Moral relativism is unbelievably frightening. Enjoy hell, bitch.

I really don't think she was pregnant evertime she took those drugs. If they cause you to bleed anyway how does she know she was even pregnant??? I don't know what she was even trying to convay cause I don't understand anything she said. I just think she is a little wako and needs some help.

  41. Amii says – reply to this

    341

makes sense to me. her body; her business.

  42. alison says – reply to this

    342

she most likely was not ever pregnant, she even says she never knew if she was. if you know anything about miscarriages and pregnancy, its generally not possible to get pregnant until the body regulates itself from the hormones. the pills she took probably just intensified her period. yes, miscarriages can be traumatic, but many women have had them and not even known what it was or that they were pregnant. i think people should stop freaking out and think logically about this one for a minute and REALLY read what she is saying.

she isnt doing it as a way of making light of abortion or miscarriage. she is using her body as a way to get people to think of social norms and expectations in a different way.

  43. Veegee says – reply to this

    343

This is a very sad case of someone desperately trying to prove that the color blue…is indeed blue. Its like trying to pass oneself off as God by starting an ant farm. It seems to me that she must have some deep hatred of herself as a woman, and might be a little angry that she cant understand herself or her body and its mystique, so she is going to create a whole new perspective that suits her incapability. Whatever the case, its not art…its gross arrogance, and I mean that completely without hatred or judgement.

  44. Nicole says – reply to this

    344

I agree with her about examining society's normatives by doing something completely out of character for our fixed roles in gender and biology, however we are not super human. We cannot secede nature and make our ovaries do something else. This is where she is flawed because certain body parts only function for one reason. Reproductive organs in the female are meant to receive eggs and become pregnant. No amount of ambiguity applied to the act will change the fact that ovaries can do anything else but release eggs to create a pregnancy.

I think she is going to far with her "art" trying to convey a message. She could have chosen another act to get this message across. While I am prochoice, I am not pro-senseless pregnancy one after another. I am sorry Aliza, but it's not a myth that ovaries are used for pregnancy. It's a fact. Not every single thing in this world can change or be challenged.

You had me at woman/gay/transgender rights, but I left once you started being destructive with human life. That isn't art that is reckless.

    350

Normally, I would be the first person to stand up and defend someone's right of freedom of expression and art, however, what this girl is doing is neither personal expression or art. To willfully subject your body to this kind of abuse suggests that she is mentally unstable at best. In the worst, she is using this 'art' to make a name for herself like some starlets use homemade pornos to make a name for themselves.

She lacks the ability to look outside herself and realize that millions, yes millions, of women have miscarried babies. Going through such an experience can be traumatic and emotionally painful. I know, I miscarried a baby, very early in the pregnancy, a few years before I had my daughter. I am now pregnant with a son and to see someone do this……it just makes me grateful that there are still some people who value life, and sad for those like this girl who don't. With that being said, I am still pro-choice, pro-gay rights, and her judgement is ultimately with the guy/girl upstairs. She'll get what is coming to her in the end.

    353

You have to be pretty amoral and without conscience to think murder = art.
Thou shalt not kill. Man, I couldn't live with myself for the rest of my natural life if I pulled something like that. She will have to answer to her own demons, should she ever evolve into someone a little more human. There are some places you should just not go, and being older, this would be one of them.

  54. Naya says – reply to this

    354

    Perez,

I would be very afraid of your readership. There is hardly two people who responded to this who even have the capability to comprehend and then reflect on what this girl wrote. Yes it's lengthy and contentious (that means big words), but it's true!

This must be why Yale has such high standards for admission. Most people are dull, reactionary, and completely incapable of original thought. What a sad world we live in.

    This girl gives me hope.

  55. Mary K says – reply to this

    355

Ok at first I didn't understand a word she said in her LONG ass speach but when I went back to read everyones comments I think she was trying to creat exactly this. She wants people to fight about ones freedome over their own bodies and everyones right to choose ( I could be wrong but thats what I get from it)
While I do think it is ones own choice to do what they will with their own bodies I would never choose to kill a child because I simply didn't want it. I agree that if a person has been raped and becomes pregnant or there is no way the mother or child would live through to delivery then an abortion could be a choice.
If a woman is running around spreading her legs with no protection for the fun of it becomes pregnant then aborts it…….that is wrong in my opinion. If you don't want the responsibilty that comes along with being a parent close your damn legs or use protection. Give the child to a family who would die to have a child but are unable to……there are so many ways to slove your problem without killing the child.
Anyway I really don't think this woman was ever pregnant anyway so she didn't kill any children…..I think she was just trying to simulate the whole process.

As a woman that has had two miscarriages of babies I really wanted I find this "woman" reprehensible. What a frickin' idiot.

I think she could have come to the same conclusions without actually having done this. We know what our bodies are capable of. She doesn't prove anything about conception, or the labels we put on the different sex organs. We already know our bodies are capable of more than we give them credit for. She did not make a statement, she just pissed off a bunch of people.

I read this again and this is what I understand.
She's gay and her overly religious parents are not accepting it…meanwhile they've cut her off from her inheritance, and now she's speaking out, and doing stupid "artsy" things to rebel against her parents and the world for making gay people seem bad.

No one understands her, she'll be stoned to death if she stays with her girlfriend who has a vagina. So she rambles and talks in circles about what's normal and what's not and how we need to get over it.

Re: Naya – This girl gives you hope? If this girl was your mother, you would have had no hope of being born if you were part of her 'project.' Intellectualizing these acts does not change what they were. Respect for human life and protection of the unborn should come before a 'piece' or 'performance' (as she calls it) possibly for course marks, and should certainly trump trendy discussion by psuedo-intellectuals over wine and cheese.

    373

This IS a hoax, so you should pull it so she doesn't get any more attention.

Yale University, Spokesperson: Ms. Shvarts is engaged in performance art. Her art project includes visual representations, a press release and other narrative materials. She stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages. The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and
function of a woman's body. She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art. Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns.

    Re: cambel

Exactly what I was thinking. I actually read the whole thing and she literally just keeps repeating the same thing over and over and over. I also love how she says one of the goals of her project is to make it everyone's perogative to explore the concept of multi-functions of organs like the uterus that challenge normative beliefs ….um what did you prove? That you can have your period and call it a miscarriage and vice versa? Thats not actually changing the function of the organ, it's just that you can't specifically identify the current function….which makes you looks like an idiot. The fact that she thinks she can change the world by abusing her body and snuffing out potential human life is really pathetic…she and that Jonathan Yegge guy should get married and shove shit into each others orifices for the rest of their lives…

if that's the case, then maybe her lungs are "meant" to breath oxygen, and maybe her heart isn't "meant" to pump blood.. maybe she should experiment with breathing bleach and ammonia, and pumping some wine thru her heart.. all in the name of "art", right?

Getting lots of attention for being a fucking idiot?

Stop posting stuff about her. She's not an artist. Read her quote…99% of it doesn't even make sense. It's nonsensical babble, meant to try to make herself sound deep and artistic. She's a no-talent moron, who wouldn't know art if it came up and bit her on the uterus.

NEXT WEEK SHE'LL BE BLOWING UP ABORTION CLINICS.
    .
I WONDER IF HER 'BODY' WAS EVER SUBJECTED TO UNWANTED/PERVERTED SEXUAL TREATMENT BY SOMEONE ELSE, THUS CREATING THIS UNSTABLE VIEWPOINT OF WHAT HER SEXUAL BODY PARTS ARE FOR.

Huh?? WTF? I'm lost in all her mumbo jumbo crap. This isn't art, its idiotic. Of all the women in this world (myself included) who have had suffered miscarriages, I find her 'truth' sickening and disgusting. She doesn't deserve my time in trying to figure this out…so this is the last I will allow myself to read such trash.

As an influential gallery owner in NYC, I can assure you that I will do all in my power to derail her career. Her "art" is a travesty and is the ultimate in bad taste. I will not support this type of expression. I will, however, use my influence with my fellow gallery owners to make sure that this type of "art" is completely discouraged. Our public does NOT want this kind of thing nor do they need this kind of thing. I should know, I'm in the business.

you are a shameless bitch. You probably got pregnant by getting gang banged at a party somewhere. It is your body but the baby you would be growing is not you. "oops I got pregnant and I am too stupid to take care of it" Have you seen an obortion?? people like you make me sick. I hope you die the same way your unborn child had to. Selfish slut.

all art is not meant to be beautiful. Some art is meant to inspire dialogue–which is what this is trying to do. Just because you don't understand what she is talking about doesn't meant that it is gibberish.

I undertand her reasons for it a little bit more, but i still think it belittles the whole concept of abortion being a last resort, i had one and i couldn't imagine ever having to do it again, it was very humbling and very good motivation to never have to put myself throguh that again. I'm not psychologically scarred by it or anythign but i want children at some point so….

A true artist need NOT defend themselves or explain their art in full detail.

Obviously this girl just wants attention. Her parents need to take her to a psychiatrist. There is nothing really controversial about abortion. Perez, you are making it controversial by keeping posts about her running. It's her choice to induce those miscarriages, fuck her head and body up - frankly, I don't give a damn. There is nothing profound about what she did, or even remotely interesting. She isn't an artist, she is a liar and attention whore at best. There is NOTHING RELEVANT about her 'art.'

Re: Naya – The problem is, its so desperately unnecessary to "reflect" on her point, because her point is so simple….and yet shes made this huge, shock affectation about people stepping outside of their assumed realities and seeing to the next level. Shes a complete moron and grossly arrogant to think that most people would need this sort of goading to see what it is she is saying. Like I said, shes trying to prove that blue is actually blue. Blue doesnt need any help, and neither do womens ovaries. To try and derail the already amazing process of procreation to create a new idea and cause people to question reality is a massive waste of what the foundation of the human body already gives us. Shes sayin…not only is blue ACTUALLY blue, but its also BLUE too! Its esoteric redundancy.

    Re: Naya
You can have original thoughts without mutilating your body or putting another in harms way. There are original thinkers out there and part of this does make sense and is thought provoking, but to go as far as to say that what she is doing "in the name of art" is ok because it is original is such an awful thing to say. Jeffrey Dahmer was original thinker if you want to go that route…………..
