Dubai appears to heart spending their oil money in big ways!
We mentioned on Friday that Madonna is rumored to be getting $25 million to do two concerts there.
And now, a new report calls attention to the billions of dollars Dubai is sinking into American-style theme park projects.
Eight major licensing deals have been struck between oil-rich investors and entertainment giants such as Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment Inc. for theme parks and other attractions.
The first big theme park is set to open in 2010 - a $2.2 billion Universal Studios park based on franchises such as King Kong and Jurassic Park. It will be part of an area dubbed Dubailand on the city's desert outskirts.
Next after that, a $1 billion Marvel Entertainment Inc. theme park will open in Abu Dhabi by 2011.
Shortly after, Dubai will have its own SeaWorld in 2012.
Disney has been notably absent from the Dubai theme park game - they claim they're still studying the market.
The entertainment companies who are 'in' on the Dubai game realize that there are cultural considerations they must take into account — their plans need to jive with the dominant Muslim culture of the Middle East region.
So, we take it, a Perezland would be out of the question????

Before we start casting stones…The Prince of Dubai has also mandated that all buildings in Dubai be LEED certified and has invested billions into making this a reality. LEED certification is the gold standard for sustainable building. They're investing STRUCTURAL adjustments (like walkable cities) rather than waiting for science to be the savior (like we do in the US).

Re: poopareus – Hey guys - thought I'd clear something up if anyone's interested - the laborours (construction workers) here are employed by private companies, many of which are based in the US. They are not employed by the UAE government. It's my job to go to India to recruit, let me tell you - those guys steal passports, forge qualification docs., everything, just to get a job over here. They live in group accomodation (like dormitories) with air conditioning e.t.c. Sure it's not the RItz, but some of the houses I see in India are literally made of mud and sticks. Most of their salary is sent by them to their family at home, enabling them (usually in about 7-10 yrs) to return there very wealthy men - certainly 'middle class'. This is a hot climate, and they work bloody hard, but they are certainly not 'slaves'. They are free to quit if they want, and if their salary is not paid there is a specific ministry office where they can complain and it's dealt with very quickly.
Dubai needs tourism too much to be so low-brow. If you come here you will see guys driving cranes and sweating, but you see the same guys at the mall or the movies or the Indian nightclubs we have here. Some people should get on a plane before they open their mouths.

Ok, after reading a few posts, I'm a little irritated. Just because someone has vacationed there doesn't make you an expert on Dubai. I used to live there and worked in a semi-govt company with UAE locals AND NOT ALL OF THEM ARE RICH (and I'm married to an Arab that was born there)!!! Yes, most of them live like they are wealthy, but SO many of them have loans on their Range Rovers, Mercedes, BMW's, etc. They do have a lot of opportunity; if they choose to take it (many don't). They can go to college for free and if they marry a fellow UAE local, they get money to help with their ridiculously elaborate wedding (it used to be around $20k or so). The government is working overtime to help with the "slave labor" issue. Just keep in mind that the workers weren't forced to come to Dubai and their contracts are usually up within two years. It's not easy to live in Dubai…the traffic SUCKS, there are a lot of rude people (not too many people know how to form a line) & everything (such as renting an apartment, opening a bank account, paying your electric bill, just running to the store to get milk is a nightmare) is twenty times harder compared to living in the US. The best part about Dubai is that Sheikh Mohammad thinks anything is possible!

You know that they have modern day slavery going on there? 60 Minutes did a special on the horrid conditions that the natives go through to build these palatial resorts and the dangerous conditions that they must endure. Hundreds of them die with terrible working conditions and only the equivalent of $0.25 a day as a consolation prize. Not only that, they work nearly 16 hour days and they all live in subsidized housing where 20 or more people are crammed in an apartment to sleep.
