Veg Out!

Filed under: Anglophilia > Politik > Paul McCartney

macca.jpg

Keeping on Linda's memory!

Longtime vegetarian and veg advocate Paul McCartney, wants you to go vegetarian to help fight global warming. Really!

"I would urge everyone to think about taking this simple step to help our precious environment and save it for the children of the future," says the legendary Beatle.

According to a 2006 United Nations report, cattle-rearing generated more greenhouse gases than transportation.

Who knew?!

Macca's surprised that a call for vegetarianism hasn't been actively promoted by friends of the earth. "It's very surprising that most major environmental organizations are leaving the option of going vegetarian off their lists of top ways to curtail global warming," he says.

That's one option. Another is to raise cattle in a more eco-friendly way.

Let's work on that!

Perez - what do you mean, "Who knew?!"

    Everyone knows!!!

Burping, farting cows release more carbon into the atmosphere (as methane) than transportation fumes worldwide because that's just how cows digest grass. There isn't really a more environmentally friendly way to raise cattle to stop this - they just fart and burp like that cuz that's what they eat and how it gets digested!

I thought there was a big furore about this last year when a load of people hassled Al Gore about not giving up meat…?

Hey - maybe you could set an example for us all and turn vegetarian? It'd help towards your summer health goals too…??

Re: LR – No, we don't have to get rid of all cows to solve the problem, we just have to stop breeding millions and millions of cows to be killed and eaten. If the only cows on the planet were the ones born naturally (ie: not created in factory farms) the methane they created would not be a significant problem.

Take a minute to reason out (or, gasp, research) your thought before posting, genius.

As Lizzy #7 said, it is NOT POSSIBLE to raise cattle in an eco-friendly way. Too many cows=too much methane being emitted into our atmosphere and too much fecal matter leaked into our water supply. How do you raise cattle in an eco-friendly manner???? You don't. The only way around it is to not consume cattle, or at the very least reduce the amount of meat/dairy you consume. It's not that hard people.

  8. niki says – reply to this

    108

The main problem with green house gas emissions from cows is their farting. I'd love to see how you suggest we make greener cows to fix that.

Re: Slut Muffin – Actually, India has the highest concentration of vegetarians in the world, because of religious dietary restrictions. Just something to keep in mind.

Also, it absolutely would make a difference if only the US went vegetarian - we are a huge and highly populous nation with a lot of sway on the world scene. A defeatist attitude help no one.

  11. Patrick says – reply to this

    111

No matter how eco-friendly you raise cattle, the fact is that it will *always* take far more grain, water and energy to create a pound of beef than it does to produce ten pounds of grain. The way to end world hunger is to end the production and eating of meat. If the planet went vegetarian, there would be a surplus of food, even with the diversion of corn and other products to biofuel, global warming could be circumvented, and there would be far less pollution of water and air. Save the planet, go veg!

Re: loco – Yes, loco, animals exist for a reason. Too bad you don't.

  13. PETA my ass says – reply to this

    113

How is being a vegetarian can save global warming? It's so stupid.

We don't even have enough food on the planet. Vegetables and rice are getting expensive in some Asian countries because there's not enough for everybody. If we all boycott meat, we are going to a lot of money for some lousy vegetables. Vegetables just don't keep you full and satisfied, they don't give you enough energy, you will have to eat a lot of them to get full.

  14. hrettig says – reply to this

    114

Perez, the entire meat industry (including dairy, eggs and seafood) is raping the earth and exploiting labor, especially immigrant and poor labor. Human Rights Watch wrote a report on abuses in the US meat industry! It truly is evil.

Meat is a giant scam - it creates all that evil AND it's bad for your health. If you're not buying organic, you're eating all these pesticides, hormones and other chemicals. Even if you are buying organic, there's the fat, cholesterol, etc.

You are great on being anti-fur; take the next step, man! Go veg!

  15. s says – reply to this

    115

Re: PETA my ass – If we all boycott meat then those starving people will be able to eat the grains we feed to the animals instead. Plus we can used the land for grains and veggies, which would make it cheaper because there would be an abundance for everyone.

  16. celeste says – reply to this

    116

dont forget the farts all those cows and pigs produce…. seriously….the meat industry is horrible, they have no respect for the animals and they are kept in dirty, small, dark cages. fur is also horrible! animals dont deserve to be tortured!

  17. Frank says – reply to this

    117

This is one of the reasons grain prices are so high; more people are eating beef and pork, especially in Asia, where the economy is so good (the cattle and pigs eat HUGE amounts of grain). If everybody in the first world cut their meat consumption by half, we could easily feed the world on the grain that wasn't eaten by cattle. We could also use the airable land to grow other vegetables instead. People's health would also be better. Also, we would reduce chances of a bird flu, and animals that were used for food would lead much more comfortable lives.

  18. give_up_the_beef says – reply to this

    118

I gave up beef, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey… all meat, back in Feb. '08 and it's been fine for me and I'm happy knowing that I'm not supporting this disgusting industry. Sure there is a small craving, especially for chicken or turkey but I can live without it.

  19. holly says – reply to this

    127

There is no "eco-friendly way" of raising cattle. Cows poop and their poop contains methane, a greenhouse gas that holds more heat than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The only solution would be to raise a hell of a lot fewer cattle, but that means meat-eaters eating less meat.

Everyone should at the very least eat less meat - it's better for your health.

  28. Monika Dobromirski says – reply to this

    128

"Another is to raise cattle in a more eco-friendly way"

How exactly?? Meat production has the single greatest impact on the enviroment, out of any other industry and is completely inefficient!

    - A given quantity of grain eaten directly will feed 5 times as many people as it will if it is first fed to livestock and then is eaten indirectly by humans in the form of livestock products
    - 1 kilo of feedlot beef takes about 50 times the water to produce as a kilo of soya beans or rice.
    - The average meat eater is responsible for 1.5 more tons of global warming gases per year than a vegetarian.
    - Animal farming generates more greenhouse gas than transport.
    - Changing your diet will make more difference than changing from a standard sedan to a hybrid car.
    - Animal farming is responsible for 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions
    - Methane cycles out of the air in just eight years, so that lower methane emissions quickly translate to cooling of the earth.
    - 70% of rainforests in the Amazon have been cleared for grazing.
    - Meat and dairy production uses huge amounts of water, causes air and water pollution, uses fuel, causes soil erosion.
    - Livestock use 30% of the earth's entire land surface.
    - 33% of the global arable land is used to produce feed for livestock.

Agreed Lizzy. There really is no way to raise cattle in an eco-friendly way. Cattle need lots of water, produce a lot of shit and need to eat!! They are major energy guzzlers. Most other farmed animals use substantial amounts of energy too but cattle are by FAR the worst. Plus, red meat is bad for you. So why eat it?

  31. lulu says – reply to this

    131

you can raise cattle in a more a eco-friendly way. And farmers are starting to experiment with digesters which take the manure and ride it of it the methane which can then be converted to an energy source for the farms. In this manner a farm can actually be off the grid, using its own waste for power.

"I love the earth but I'm not giving up my steak." When I see this and similar comments posted I want to puke my vegetarian, bean and soy eating guts all over you. Stop thinking of meat eating as a necessity. Animals weren't put on this earth for you to eat. We're all put on the earth to co-habitat, and all humans are trying to do is dominate. If you eat meat and claim to care for the environment you are a hypocrite - period. No amount of recycling or Prius-driving will absolve you of this. The reason all you overweight men have man boobs or 'moobs' is because of all the oestrogen and female hormones they pump into cattle to fatten them up quicker. These same hormones have been proven to promote male infertility. Think BSE and foot and mouth disease - someone is telling you something, and that something is to start questioning what you put in your mouth, now!

  42. madada says – reply to this

    142

Um, there is no "other way," cows make farts full of methane, in addition to massive amounts of poop, which ruins watersays and turns to GHG. Reduce your meat/dairy intake, its the best thing you can do for the environment!

  43. Yuna says – reply to this

    143

I'm not usually like this but this has to be said because perez's comments are so wrong. there is NO WAY to raise cattle economically, the green house gases come from their farts, which they have to do, its a fact of life. Chicken, fish, and other animals are fine, but jesus americans and canadians, PUT DOWN THE BURGER AND EAT A CARROT. your colons are being filled with left over shit that can attribute to early death. going vegetarian or vegan will help the world in so many ways, and really if cannibalism is so wrong why are we killing living, breathing things to eat them when there are so many alternatives to meat products.

Just my opinion i need to say.

  44. Nena says – reply to this

    144

To make the cow-industry eco-friendly you would have to prevent them from crapping and farting. Not an easy thing to do. I stopped eating meat about ten years ago and it is the easiest decision I have ever made. Milk and eggs are harder, I have always fallen back to them (but I choose the free-range and ecoligical stuff and I drink soymilk at home). You can do it to Perez, come on amigo!!

People fail to realize that we don't need or have to eat meat. It's a very bad habit. 1 acres of land can feed 1 vegetarian for a year. It takes 22 acres to feed a meat-eater for a year. Our world population is exploding. Einstein was a vegetarian. Meat-eating can cause health problems plus there is the risk of e-coli, ingesting steroids, hormones, & antibiotics. Vegetarians live about 7 years longer.

I have a hard time with the "pick-and-choose" way Paul McCartney decides to educate the public about environmental and animal causes. He and his ex came to Canada and BASHED all East coast families that make their living, like the generations before them, from sealing. A part of Canada's fishery industry. Apart from the highly publicized pictures of a snowy white baby seal (ploy) being hit over the head…more seals are dying from Environmental causes than the seal hunt will ever. I wish he would just be more clear in his attempts to educate. In this case he has only perpetuated propaganda on Larry King when at the end of the day he didnt know that P.E.I and Newfoundland are two different places. It's very difficult to tell a group of people that what is good and right for me is good and right for you - Just a reminder there is always another side to every story.

Raise cattle in a more eco-friendly way? It's literally their shit that is causing the greenhouse gases. So as long as you flesh eating monsters keep consuming animals you're going to continue to contribute to global warming. I'm sure once we're all flooded or homeless because of hurricanes you might then rethink your selfish meat eating ways. And for the stupid comment about God making animals so tasty, doesn't it say in the Bible that we are supposed to protect animals? Do you really base your beliefs and opinions off of some book written by fanatics thousands of years ago (the Bible) anyhow? That's just too funny, and a little bit scary actually.

Okay Okay people. It is true (most people who care enough to find out ) know that the extreme amounts of meat being produced is affecting our earth in some very bad ways. We've thrown nature all out of whack with our mass production of.. just about any and everything. How about this as a comprimise.. think about how much meat you throw out .. daily weekly monthly and cut down by twice that much. you'll be saving animals, the earth and you will probably lose a few pounds when you cut down on fatty meat!

This is stupid. Vegetarians are nothing but self rightous hippies thinking that they are saving the animals and the world through not eating meat. However the only thing that will stop green house gases from coming out of cows asses is to exterminate all of them. What do you think those hippie PETA bitches would say about that?

    187

okay who. since that's SOOOOOOOO logical. vegans aren't talking about killing the cows to stop the methan emissions; we're talking about stopping BREEDING THEM FOR SLAUGHTER. the cow population is so large becasue they're bred to die. it was NOT always that way. get a clue. or use google. and most vegans/vegetarians do NOT support PETA. Peta has people who wear fur (like Dita VonTeese) as spokespeople. that's hypocrisy at it's finest. read The China Diet then attempt an informed discussion.

Um, there's no way to raise cattle in an eco-friendly way, sorry to say.

I used to be a MAJOR MEAT EATER — like twice a day — and decided to quit for environmental reasons. It was MUCH EASIER than I anticipated, and my body feels A MILLION TIMES BETTER. Seriously. I used to love meat and not understand why anyone would want to give it up, but now that I've been veggie for 4 1/2 months now, I can't imagine living any other way. Now meat seems inhumane and barbaric, WHICH IT IS. Everyone should at least give vegetarianism a try!

Animals are not on this planet for our consumption any longer. They are here to live out their existence as we are, in natural harmony - not the monstrous way we have exploited them and created unnatural harmony upon this earth.

There is one way…possibly. And don't say these things can't be created, because they can. If you could capture the methane gas that cows produce and use it in a more environmentally friendly way. I know they are looking into capturing methane gas to develop fuels. It's not exactly 'eco-friendly,' as it obviously still will release emissions into the atmosphere, however, if these methane emissions could be used as fuels instead of fossil fuels, then it might reduce the overall effect on the earth. I don't think it's necessary to get rid of cows altogether either way. Cows are a product of nature too, there is a reason why they are hear. Probably reducing their numbers couldn't hurt though.

GO VEG! More important than global warming, everyone should go vegetarian because we are smart enough to know how to survive (and be healthy!) without killing innocent animals. If you don't want to listen to me, please search Google to see how animals are mistreated and slaughtered before you start defending your meat-eating lifestyles.
