The Fat Lady Is Warming Up

Filed under: TV News > American Idol

idol.jpg

Are y'all getting sick of American Idol yet?

Seems so!

Even though about 29.2 million people have been tuning in every week this season, industry insiders are twittering about the show's notable declines in key demographics and average total viewers.

Simon Cowell was quoted as saying that Idol was suffering this year because the contestants lack "personality" and are making "safe" song choices.

But, the industry insiders assert that it could be a fundamental problem — show fatigue.

The conventional wisdom among TV producers and their accountants is that hit shows, no matter how popular, usually start delivering diminished ratings somewhere from Season 5 to Season 7.

Idol is currently in its 7th season.

The report goes on to say that some fans are seeing the program as less essential than it was a year or two ago.

How many times can Americans see Ryan Seacrest insult Simon Cowell, and vice versa, before they say, "Enough already"?

Are you guys over Idol? Is it time to pull the plug? Can anything be done to spice it up in a good way?

The ratings are dwindling because the put contestants on season after season who are cute and don't have good voices.

  15. chris says – reply to this

    115

Idol needs to downsize on the commercials. I'd start watching again if the contestants sang longer than a minute and a half then we go to another commercial. Make them sing longer…. less commercials.

    116

Idol is done. No one cares anymore.

i use to have to watch it, but now if i miss it, i can see w/in hours on youtube…

I'd actually rather see only what i want on youtube, instead of watching a whole hour which includes 50 mins of garbage.

    118

I used to watch the show religiously for the first 5 seasons, but I've grown totally bored with it at this point… I wouldn't mind if it went away… All good things must come to an end…

  19. Joann says – reply to this

    119

Yeah I am so tired of that show. I don't think I have watched a whole season since Ruben Studdard won.

  20. Nunnnnnz says – reply to this

    120

new judges and definitely a new host!

  21. Gracecolores says – reply to this

    121

OK, George. How many Top 12 non-winning finalists would you say have been even SOMEWHAT successful, even if they had record contracts? I can think of only 7: Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Pickler, Bucky Covington, and MAYBE Kimberly Caldwell, Kat McPhee and Kimberly Locke. That's seven people out of 66!! So, being in the Top 12 guarantees nothing. Hell, only two of the WINNERS have truly been able to make successful careers for themselves!

  22. lvsparkylyle says – reply to this

    122

It's this year's crop. Some talent but nothing verrrrry compelling. Still addicted.

  23. Cali says – reply to this

    123

Hell yes, I'm over it. HAVE BEEN OVER IT for the last few seasons. Same thing all the time, the people that win don't even make it.

  24. mj says – reply to this

    124

I never watched it until this season. It can be annoying. Simon has a lot of nerve blaming the contestants.
It's still good clean entertainment that the whole family can watch though. It also shows kids that you have to follow your dreams.

  25. Sharon J says – reply to this

    125

Seriously, for one season, they need to have no age limit for contestants. Put the old up against the young. That will get people to watch, if only for one more season.

  26. SNL says – reply to this

    126

They've been saying that about Saturday Night Live since the 80s and it's been on for 33 years….they'll keep going as long as they're making money.

  28. Ashley says – reply to this

    128

I don't think it can be helped. Certain seasons draw everyones attention. Could be the contestants…or not. I always find myself randomly tuning in every other season.

I've been bored since after the first season.
The first season was my first and last watching american idol.

  31. Graxton says – reply to this

    131

Simon signed on to do the show until 2010. He said that he will not renew his contract after that, and he will keep his word. So, that is when the show will end officially… 2 more seasons to go and then that's it.

  32. lino says – reply to this

    134

it would help if it wasn't soo fake. I'm over that show

  35. Pinevegas says – reply to this

    135

Part of the problem is that they no longer include celebrity judges on the panel each week. That added freshness to the show each week. Also, I can not longer listen to Paula Abdul when she gives her opinion on the performers each week. It's become so painful and frustrating listening to her try to form a clear sentence that I mute the volume on the TV when she speaks.

  36. Kitten says – reply to this

    136

yes, stop picking BORING WHITE GIRLS who TRY to sing like black women. They deliberately pick CAMERA READY PEOPLE instead of people who can sing. They want someone "america" will like, and when i say america, i mean white america. there hasn't been a jen hudson or fantasia on the show yet. all of their choices are boring, i stopped watching as soon as the contestants went the vegas. none of them interested me.

  37. kitten says – reply to this

    137

oh yeah the stage design was so small and generic looking, it really sucked.

  38. Jamesmilw69 says – reply to this

    138

Re: Ilovethisshow – Randy is the only one with any "cred", even though he goofed himself with the "dog" crap, Paula should get some talent, before she tries to judge it, the other two should just evaporate

The real problem is the themes they do every week, Beatles are great and all but 1 week is fine. Dolly Parton and Mariah Carey come one they are a terrible choice. They need to have more freedom in song choices

    143

I tuned out this season because I heard the deck was stacked with ringers. I thought this was supposed to be a showcase for the undiscovered. I've about had it with the organized lying from the Admin. in DC (and the political parsing, which is not limited to DC) all the way to AI's parsing in Hollywood and everything in between.

Soooooo Over it and Soooo over Simon and Ryan and Paula… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

  51. DVR says – reply to this

    151

The only way to watch the show is to record it on your DVR and fast forward through everything but the songs and possibly Randy and Simon's comments. Paula can't complete a sentence and blows smoke up everyone's a_s. You get through a 2 hour show in 45 minutes or less. :)

  52. CRAM says – reply to this

    152

I actually think its better this year than most previous years. But it is true that seven years is long… I don't know. I still think it can suck an audience in. And its not like no one is watching

  54. Henry says – reply to this

    154

I know how to spice up AI. Use a more "survivor or big brother" approach next season. start with 60 finalists.

America votes for the BEST 3 singers, and they(the 3 best) get to put up 3 singers to go home. and America will vote which one of the 3 goes home.

  55. daniela says – reply to this

    155

    i'm sick of paula!

  56. Adrianne Guevarra says – reply to this

    156

American Idol is only good a after a few seasons. Honestly, I stopped watching it when Kelly Clarkson. NO OTHER american idol contestant can compare to her amazing voice. & if they wanted to boost their ratings i say bring on some Justin Timberlake they will for sure get high ratings.

  57. skippy says – reply to this

    157

The best thing Idol can do is choose REAL talent. Choose Kelly Clarksons.
Don't run the contestants into the ground. Quit trying to get professional singers to coach - in other words, quit pimping the Idol brand.
Mariah's song choice was less than inspired, and Dolly's song so obviously boring to Simon. Get to Living would have been a better choice.
The problem with Idol now is that is less about the truly talented singers and more about the marketing.
Madonna would have been a great contestant.
Quit trying to grab money and truly seek talented people. REAL People like you do with the talent show in England that discovered the opera guy.

  58. JenH says – reply to this

    158

Replace Ryan and Randy…keep Paula and Simon.

  59. jrjoe007 says – reply to this

    159

INCREASE THE AGE LIMIT - I know alot of people in their 30's and 40's that can sing. Plus it would be halarious to see those that cant see too….

  60. All I want is David Cook says – reply to this

    160

I couldn't care if it's season 400, I am in love with David Cook and he's the best they've ever had. Thank god he came along when he did because without him I would be DONE with this show. After he wins I will be done, as a matter of fact. But by then I will have gotten what I want out of it and David Cook will be mine.

  61. Ginedora says – reply to this

    161

I would say get rid of Paula. She's been so boring to watch this year, because she gets tongue tied and doesn't know what to say….then you have to wait for her to gather her thoughts. Even Randy and Simon have joked about her taking forever when it's her turn. I'm just wondering if the problem is because she's loaded with even more pain meds than before! They also need to let them pick their own songs all the way through. And trash theme weeks!!! OMG I HATE THEME WEEKS ON IDOL!!!!!!!!!!! /wrists

  62. Desiree says – reply to this

    162

    I agree with Simon

  63. Desiree says – reply to this

    163

Re: Ginedora – I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!!

  64. Shans says – reply to this

    164

i would watch it if perez was the host

  65. Mike L says – reply to this

    165

Keep Simon. Replace Ryan with Bryan Dunkelman, because Ryan has too many jobs now and I think Bryan needs one. Replace Paula with someone who can string together a SHORT coherent sentence and does not over-react when Simon disagrees with her…even Kathy Lee Gifford would be better! Replace Randy with someone who has a bigger vocabulary and does not name drop…how's about David Foster? Also, they could try doing what they do on So You Think You Can Dance: Have the bottom 3 and the judges pick one person they want to save; of the remaining 2, there will be a sing-off where the public votes and the one with the lowest number of votes is eliminated.

  66. dann! says – reply to this

    166

american idol got boring after the first season. they only had 2 popular people out of 7? sounds like a waste to me

  67. maddie says – reply to this

    167

the idea of the show is okay, but to be a pop star its really not all about having a good voice. its about having some sort of edge. while david archuletta is sweet and all, hes not original so hes just gonna be another ruben studdard or whatever. american idol tries to produce these goody goody american pie people, but it doesn't work like that. people don't like wholesome people. at least as popstars. they should get better judges who actually know about the music industry, and can spot someone who will produce, good, original, songs. we don't need menopausal psychotic, petefile, wannabe ghetto judges. they're just old.

  68. rg says – reply to this

    168

yeah, they could have the contestants write and perform ORIGINAL material…meaning lyrics and beats that the contestants write themselves.

  69. Tori says – reply to this

    169

First off Ryan & David Archuleta are both hot. You try having like five thousand jobs or being sixteen and being able to go on a showlike that. This has def. been the best season of the show. And now that they finally voted off that untalented horrible unpitched country bitch lover Krysite it will get a lot better. =]
    kthnk.

  70. libby says – reply to this

    170

i actually find the show very entertainning. i never get tired of music. i think all the talk of decreased ratings and everything is annoying and it is what will probably bring down the show.

  71. westerperezster says – reply to this

    171

Ax Paula. She is so ridiculously annoying i have to mute the TV when she is on.

  72. SCOTT WILLIS says – reply to this

    172

yes, i've been over with it. I really only enjoy the auditions and the final couple of shows before announcing the winner, bc usually the one you like ends up getting voted off in the start. and yes it has been on WAY too long its boring nothing new, not even that great of talent, all good things or (once good things) must come to an end.

  73. ILOVEAMERICANIDOL says – reply to this

    173

    i'm not sick of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my favorite part is simon & paula always flirting

    181

    I haven't watched it since season 2.

  82. David Cook Fan says – reply to this

    182

I think they should lift the age limit. That would bring in a whole lot more experienced talent, not to mention people who can write their own material…

  83. DavidCookFan says – reply to this

    183

I think that it's losing ratings because (gasp!) it's actually looking for TALENTED people. Not everyone on the show is a 16-y-o kid anymore. The show is maturing with it's 20-something audience, who started watching at 16, which is AWESOME, but it now has that stigma of the previous (and nontalented) winners, so no one's watching it.

  84. Deadlikeme says – reply to this

    184

american idol rocks im definetly not sick of it!

  85. Hdub says – reply to this

    185

Even a really good show like 30 Rock wishes it had that kind of show fatigue. DVR's have put an end to the days of " appointment television". 29 million????? ? The Oscars only had 32 million viewers and John Stewart was great. Whether you like Idol or not people don't watch TV in the same way any more. Curious as to why you care so much - this same post pops up every other week.

  86. juli says – reply to this

No so sick of it! No more idol please!

  87. Jess says – reply to this

  91. saraaa says – reply to this

    191

i think that they should get new judges. think about it..alot of people would watch to see how the new ones react(at least i think so). even though american idol wouldnt be the same with paula randy and simon, i think they need some change in there.

  92. Jack Swan says – reply to this

    192

YES! Bring BACK Dunkleman! The guy was good….

  93. ds says – reply to this

    193

I've never actually seen a full episode of this show and I never want to. It's a bunch of no talent morons judging other no talent morons. Go away!

  94. someonewhoknows says – reply to this

    194

The only thing that could help idol now is for them to fire randy and paula and ryan the famewhore seacrest! seriously am i the only person on earth who can see right through him and how fake and annoying he is? Also I think the producers of the show need to prove the votes… something is not right with that show and I think that all the attention votefortheworst has brought to the secrets of american idol is helping people see what a fraud this show seems to be.

  95. suzyh says – reply to this

    195

I actually still like it a lot…. but would like to see them change the format to more of an X Factor type of show, with the judges becoming mentors and opening up the age limit. There are A LOT of really great singers out here that are not "28 and under." Just a thought…. but I still think the show is great and that the judges compliment each other well….

  96. David Archuleta Rocks! says – reply to this

    196

Paty, I SO agree with you: David Archuleta is the cutest kid they've ever had on that show. He's also sweet, kind, humble, and above all else, one of the most TALENTED people they've ever had. He'll take the whole enchilada, mark my word!

  97. Gracecolores says – reply to this

    197

I find it really interesting that there are so many music "critics" on this site who feel it's their God-given right to judge the talent level of everyone on American Idol, including the judges. NEWS FLASH: Neither Randy, Paula and Simon NOR the contestants give a rat's ass what ANY of you think, SO ENOUGH WITH THE IDIOTIC COMMENTS ALREADY!
