Father Kills Son in Hunting Accident After Mistaking Him for Turkey
BELLE PLAINE, Minn. — The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.
Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.
Klaseus dialed 911 on his cell phone. Emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene.
"He was absolutely panicked. That would be an understatement," Ponath said. "Very distraught."
Ponath said the shooting was an accident but that his department is continuing to investigate the circumstances.

Dumb. I know father's want to get their sons and daughters into hunting as soon as possible, and the children want to be out there with them, but no reason to have them out there before they are legal hunting age (12 years old in my state). Couple things that have been brought up by people ignorant about turkey hunting. You wear camo, not blaze orange, and you have to sit as still as possible and call the turkeys in. Any sight of you or movement by you, and they will spook. Turkeys are hunted with a shotgun, usually a 12 ga shotgun with a 3" chamber. You call them in as close as you can (usually 20 to 30 yards), and shoot them in the head. You don't want to shoot them in the body because the shot may not make it through their heavy feathers to actually reach their body, and if it did get through the feathers, you're filling the part of the bird that you want to eat, with lead shot. Some states permit you to use a rifle, but most hunting is done with a shotgun so you increase your odds of hitting your target.
Hunting turkey can be dangerous. Hunters are up very early in the morning (sometimes several days in a row). They are tired, light conditions can be poor, they are dressed in camo, are anxious to bag a turkey, and are making noises that replicate the animal being hunted. Accidents are very much a possibility.
I went to school with the father. He's a great guy that had a wonderful family and always had kind words for everyone he met. If he heard of a tragedy that anyone was involved with, his heart would have gone out to you. For those of you who chose this opportunity to slam him with your comments, I wish you had the opportunity to meet him first…. this man would have taken the bullet a million times before he would have ever harmed his child.

Wow , this is so unbelieveably tragic and sad. I started reading this and one of the first things into my head was maybe this was not an accident, but I do believe it was. This happened only 5 miles from my home, and it dont find that this should have any entertainment value. I love this site, and the entertainment value of this. This was a very sad event that happened here in Minnesota, we do not appreciate this.
