"Father Kills Son in Hunting Accident After Mistaking Him for Turkey"

Father Kills Son in Hunting Accident After Mistaking Him for Turkey

BELLE PLAINE, Minn. — The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.

Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Klaseus dialed 911 on his cell phone. Emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

"He was absolutely panicked. That would be an understatement," Ponath said. "Very distraught."

Ponath said the shooting was an accident but that his department is continuing to investigate the circumstances.

This is a very sad situation. My best friend is family friends with the Klaseus family and they come hunting in Colorado with her family every year. The dad has always been very protective and taken all the necessary safety precautions for hunting. The little boy, Hunter, was wearing camoflage and the dad told him to wait in a certain spot but he got caught up in the excitement and wanted to catch up with his dad so he didn't listen (like many children his age) and it lead to a tragic mistake. It was by all means not the fathers "fault"… simply a mistake that the family will have to live w. everyday for the rest of their lives. I don't love hunting either but i do understand some people enjoy this hobby, to each their own! Hunter has 2 older sisters that are 11 and 12. Please refrain from the nasty comments and instead keep this family in your thoughts

    210

i have hunted with my dad since i was 11 growing up in minn and i can say these unfortunate events do happen and its extremely common for children to learn about gun safety while hunting with their parents. the reason they don't wear blaze is due to the turkey's keen eyesight for color. no one wants to see their child hurt.

  11. Another NRA idiot bites the dust says – reply to this

    211

What kind a parent brings his 9-year-old son hunting? Why not just ship him off to the front lines in Iraq? This kid's mother AND father are both to blame for this senseless loss. They don't need to go to prison, though. They'll suffer the rest of their lives in a fashion greater than any Cell Block C could provide. When will these asshole hunter nutjobs learn?

So unbearably sad. Why do parents, who probably make sure their kids have seatbelts fastened to go around the block, allow them to walk around in camo (lest they miss a goddamned turkey) and get killed? There are no laws against allowing kids in this cesspool of testosterone?

  16. Kitten says – reply to this

I also live in MN my great uncle shot and killed his 40 yr old son a few years ago. He also mistook him for a turkey. I guess this isn't that uncommon

  17. holly says – reply to this

    217

Gee, I wonder how you could mistake your Son for a Turkey? I'm not much of a hunter, but I think I would know the difference. My heart goes out to the family! I would never want to witness my child's death. Let alone having that child die by my hand. I just dont understand how this could happen. A loss without reason is the biggest loss of all!

  18. Holly... me again! says – reply to this

    218

There are some sick, SICK, SICK people out there. I've just briefly read through some of the comments, and I'm shocked at what I've read. SICK!!! First of all, the person who commented about wishing he to could have a Son and have him for dinner is a mental case, I dont care if he/she was just fucking around. SICK! And as far as bashing those who hunt isn't fair either. If you hunt for the food then you are only doing what God intended. It is more humane to shoot a deer with a rifle, cut it up and eat it for lunch then it is to eat a burger from McDonalds.

  19. Holly AGAIN` says – reply to this

    219

WTF! What is wrong with people! I just read some of the comments and OMG! To the person who said he/she too wishes they had a SOn so they could have them for dinner needs evaluated like NOW!!! SOB!!!

And to the one who says hunting is like slaughtering animals. Um? Do you eat McDonalds? B/C if you do then let me say this. Shooting a deer and then eating it for lunch is more humane then the slaughter houses that provide all the shit hole resturants out there in this world. WAKE THE FUCK UP PEOPLE!

Personally I do not like hunting, however, I do not think that is the issue. The lack of emotion for this poor family on this website makes me sick. I am not talking about Perez, I am talking about the comments that have been made. This is not a video game, this is real life. The death of a 9 year old boy is as real as the pain his family/father must be feeling. Some of you are really sick citizens and you should feel shame for the comments you have made. I hope that you are never put in this situation to feel first hand the sadness and pain this father must be feeling.

    239

I have to comment. My Dad took all of us hunting at various times. My brother still hunts. He eats what he shoots. We were all taught how to handle firearms and to see what you are shooting at. Yes, when you hunt turkey you wear camo. My husband used to hunt and is being put into the lottery for a moose permit this year. Thanks to my brother. It is a tragic accident that this young man was killed. His Dad is going to have to live with this for the rest of his life. A little restraint on the negative comments would be welcome. I do not agree with so called "Trophy Hunting". But if it can fill a freezer full of meat to be used go for it. Myself, I buy my meat at the local organic market.

Probably not considering the insane rhetorical questions of "how could you not know what your son looks like". Camoflauge is camo for a reason idiots. Also, if the VP of the US can shoot his friend while bird hunting - shooting your SMALL son who is HIDDEN in the terrace seems quite possible.

THOSE OF YOU WITH CHILDREN WILL AGREE WITH ME. OUR OPINIONS ON HUNTING ARE IRRELEVANT! THE FACT IS A YOUNG CHILD DIED UNNECESSARILY AND DESERVES THE SAME RESPECT THAT ANYONE OF OUR LOVED ONES DESERVE.

    263

  64. callitwhatitis says – reply to this

    264

Re: Rebecca – The child most definitely deserves respect (as do the animals that are being hunted for the entertainment of morons), but I don't feel that the father deserves respect. I understand how a trigger happy hunter could shoot first and ask questions later, and I understand that it is customary to wear camo when hunting turkeys. What I don't understand is taking your very young child hunting at all–let alone taking him on a hunting trip where it is customary to wear camo! Leave the kids at home! It is neither appropriate nor safe to take young children hunting! I don't care how many bleeding heart conservatives talk about beign taught gun safety and all that crap when they were young. Accidents happen. Adding firearms into the mix results in fatal accidents. Adding children is just plain stupid. The man deserves all of the vilification that he is getting. I have no sympathy for him whatsoever. It was an accident, but it was an accident that could have been easily avoided had the father put his son's well-being before his own desire to shoot a turkey.

Re: Ashley – Too bad this kind of thing is not LESS common. Years ago a woman near where I lived was shot and killed IN HER OWN BACK YARD by a hunter who mistook her white mittens for the tail of a White-tailed deer. Without being certain, he shot and killed her, knowing full well that the area in which he was hunteing was bordered by residential houses.

I know of another case where a hunter mistook (or maybe they did it on purpose) my neighbor's horse for a deer, and from across the road, while the horse was in its pasture, this idiot hunter shot the horse in the leg—and then left when they realized what they had done. The hunter was never found.

Re: Rebecca – Rebecca — this is one post that NEEDS to be here. Maybe some other idiot hunter will think twice about taking a little kid on a killing spree. The purpose of hunting is to kill. Whether or not he killed his own kid, this guy (and his agreeable wife) were exposing their young son to guns and slaughter. These Republican NRA nutcases are the same creatures who have books removed from the library for violent content. Your parents can't take you into a bar, but they can take you on a killing field. Great NRA logic.

    280

This is soooooooo sad… but, come on, people- making hunting illegal? Yes, the animals are innocent, but no more so than the chickens on the farm. I know many hunters and they eat what they kill, usually in lieu of the hormone-injected meat you buy in the supermarket. It's so much healthier for their families. And MUCH better for the other animals in the wild. They get overcrowded then there's no more food for them! Then they are forced to migrate into the cities, where it's much less safe for them. Hunting is HUMANE.
Now that that's been said, focus on the real issue here: a father's heart is destroyed. Pray or hope for him. He needs it.
