Re: carl – Not everyone responds that way to pot. 2 of my closest friends smoke pot on a daily basis and both have still managed to earn straight A's for the last 3 semesters and have near perfect GPA's. They also live in their own apartment, which they keep clean and tidy and until recently they both held part-time jobs at a restaurant. They only quit because finals are coming up and they wanted more time for themselves to study. I'm not saying that sometimes they don't just smoke and then sit and do nothing - because they do do that occasionally; but people who don't smoke pot sit around and do nothing too.
It's not like Drunkst was saying, "Oh yeah let's smoke pot and be high all the time!" No. She's saying that it should be legal because it really isn't that bad of a drug. If pot is illegal, then cigarettes and alcohol should be illegal too.

As a few people have expressed, I too, went to collage, have a great job and generally have my shit together, as does my husband and we prefer a joint after work as opposed to a beer–so what!

In my opinion, it's a massive waste of legal and law enforcement resources pursuing and giving police records to recreational pot users, most of whom are productive, contributing and even professional members of society. I do not use at all myself, but a two-tier system which still pursues traffickers but decriminilizes small users actually works very well in other countries, freeing up overburdened tax dollars for serious crime. Legislation is slow to catch up with society, forcing underground legions of casual but responsible recreational time pot users, many of whom view alcohol and rampant but seemingly indiscriminate legal pharmaceutical use as a greater threat. Countries who have adopted this approach have not seen a materialization of a slippery slope.

I agree, Laura is an idiot. I had to commenther back. When I was in highschool I had a group of friends that sent seperate emails to me regarding my marijuana use. One of them said something to the effect of "one day we're going to be hanging out and driving around, and you're stoned and we crash, i die and when you 'come to' and realize what happened you'll feel awful." So, it just goes to show….dont knock it till you try it. Weed doesnt FUCK YOU UP like alcohol does.
I think the point is that smoking cigarettes has many drawbacks, but the US government arbitrarily allows it to exist shunning pot as the "dangerous" drug, and ignoring the fact that smoking in general is causing cancer.

Wake up! Those of you criticizing pot have probably never tried it. Yes, you may get cancer, but that is called free will. Cigarettes and alcohol are legal and are far more addictive and deadly. I have a graduate degree in science from a highly respected university, and I smoked weed every day. Research shows that alcohol is likely to lead to symptoms of alzheimers and parkinsons. Just look at George Bush's speeches and you can see the effects of his years of hard drinking. He seems like he may be in the beginnings of one of those two illnesses (let's hope!!). There are people in every community who light up and you would never suspect it. Get over it people!

A lot of my friends use drugs, some lost their jobs already because they were absent or late many times without good excuses. Would it be a better world if many people lose their jobs because of smoking weed?
I find some of my weed smoking friends have serious mood swing especially when they come down. They are not nice and peaceful at all. Drugs give you mood swing, That's the fact. You can't be on pot 24 by 7 to stay mellow, you have to go to work and run errands with a clear head, you have to focus sometimes.

They can be nice when they are on weed but if anything annoys them while they are high, they can be so angry and crazy which is so unnecessary. Any person who is not high would know how to handle a little situation peacefully and skillfully. But when someone is high and he thinks something ruins his high, he will go crazy.
I agree. American/Americans have a view of weed that most are clueless about because they are just too damn close minded to try it. I think in the realm of things…smoking pot is better then indulging in a cocktail. If you intake too much alcohol, you are wasted and can't function normally where as when smoking hooch you still have control. Also, you don't have the same ill effects the next day. I'm an avid smoker and fan of the hooch! If more people would smoke…then the place would better! Everyone would just be mellow!

Unfortunantly, because the government (who has spent multi-billions on the 'war against marijuana) would rather try the "abstinence" route (which worked with teen pregnancy, right? hah!) instead of releasing actual useful information that could prevent any health issues associated with pot.
Marijuana, by itself, is not unhealthy! The only unhealthy part of smoking pot, is SMOKING IT. So leaving marijuana alone!

I have friends with MS who use medical pot-one makes it into a tincture or brownies, the other uses a special vaporizor which allows you to inhale the useful chemicals without actually burning the plant, thereby reducing cancer risk. Medical pot has been very helpful for them, by reducing the severe crippling symptoms of their disease and allowing them to be more active. They don't do it to sit around and be stoned, they do it to be able to take a bath unaided, or to go grocery shopping…. Sick people who REALLY need it should be able to use it. I'm not sure about kids, actresses etc….??? There are some good prescription anti-nausea drugs derived from chemicals found it pot, Marinol is one.

How many legal prescription drugs do you take? They are FULL of thousands of chemicals with sometimes long term toxicity, and when layered with another drug or two, can have affects that may have not even been researched and are not known. I guess drugs are O.K. when big business controls it and can profit using the justification of adding to the economy. I acknowledge that there are many useful drugs that serve to keep people alive, and have their place, but there are thousands of others that I question. I worked in the chemical industry for thirty years, and know a little of what I speak. Many people, particularly older people, die from adverse affects of drug combining. When you think about this, it puts smoking a little pot into perspective. I don't, but why should Joe Blow Toker get a record, when Jane Schmane takes layers of mood and pain pills and drives around while under their influence? Hypocrisy rules, and at the same time the U.S. seems archaic compared to other civilized countries in legislation modernization. Other countries do not dole out prescriptions at the same rate.
