Girl To Have Surgery On Large Facial Tumor
Tumor Could Grow, Causing Vietnamese Teen To Suffocate
MIAMI — A Vietnamese girl with a 17-pound facial tumor is awaiting life-saving surgery that will restore her ability to eat and speak.
Lai Thi Dao, 15, suffers from a Schwannoma tumor that has been growing since she was 3. The tumor has severely disfigured her face and kept her from attending school.
"She had been with no treatment for the last 10 years," said Dr. Jesus Gomez, who is performing the surgery. "Something that started like a small black bean at the tongue now has become this huge tumor."
Doctors at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital said the tumor, likely the largest Schwannoma tumor ever reported in the world, has grown so large that she has difficulty talking, eating and sleeping. They said it would likely cut off her throat's passageway, which could cause her to suffocate.
The tumor is scheduled to be removed in a 10-hour surgery April 29.
The International Kids Fund is trying to raise money to help pay for her surgery.

1- they don't have hospitals that will take cases like this for "free" nor the equipment.
2- tumors like this usually keep growing, and therfore need more than just 1 surgery
3-the parents usually can't stop working bcuz they have other children to feed, and no Medicaid does not exist in Vietnam. Other countries usually don't have a healthcare system for the poor.

Are you people so ignorant that you think the rest of the world has the same government assistance and health care that you do? Take your blinkers off - there is a whole other world besides just the US. It sounds like her parents tried to get her help earlier, but were constantly turned away. Thankfully someone is giving her a chance to get the treatment she needs.
OMG, if only all these worthless stupid people who seem to have nothing better then to post using as many swear words possible without saying a thing could be loaded on a plane and made to survive in a 3rd world country for one week, maybe then they would understand the rest of the world is not anywhere close to the united states economically, medically or socially!!!

Hey Perez, Thank You for taking the time to shed light on this little girl's situation. I work with a law office, and both attorneys (husband and wife) attended this weekend the Ronald McDonald's House in which this girl is staying at while she undergoes treatment, my bosses got a chance to be with her and many others that are staying there as well for other types illnesses. This is a VERY GOOD cause, the Ronald McDonald house provides shelter and food for these people that are in dire need of treatment that in their countries couldn't afford otherwise. My bosses along with others are part of a group that go to the RMcDH every so often and take meals and their kids so they can play with the kids that are there. This is something that anyone can plan, I encourage you and any others to check on your local RMcDH and get a group together to give a little back to those people that needs us the most. On the 29th we are gonna hold a special prayer for this girl and hope that all goes well and that she can carry on with a normal life….THANK YOU AGAIN for SHEDDING LIGHT……its not always about Gossip and Celebrities….sometimes is good to hear and see these things so we can appreciate how blessed were are.

And to all those saying the surgeon should have done the operation for free, even if he did (and assuming they could find a surgeon in Vietman qualified to do the procedure), the equipment/anaesthesia/nurses/drugs/follow up care still has to be paid for, it's not just the surgeon that has to be paid for.
DMD - I assume that if you or a member of your family (God forbid) developed cancer, got hit by a bus or got ill you wouldn't accept any treatment? You'd just look on it as natural selection? If, as I suspect, you would take the treatment, why is this little girl any different in her right to life as you?

To call this child abuse/neglect is a disservice to her parents who I'm sure worked so hard to not only help her with her condition in the best way they new how to, but to also make a living for their children. Instead of pointing fingers and ridiculing people who don't have any other options, maybe you should take your ass to medical school and become a doctor in Vietnam, where you can work for little to nothing helping extreme health cases.

I just came back from vietnam because i went with a medical group providing medical care for children throughout the country. I have seen these sorts of problems throughout vietnam and these types of cancer are very common and most people are not treated because there is no health insurance in vietnam and most people can afford food let alone health care. If you want to donate to a good cause you can go to vietnam through project vietnam and actually go with the group and help provide medical care with a group of doctors and nurses. It was the best experience of my life and I think everyone should go see how third world countries because it really gives perspective on life.
I'm thankful you didn't make fun of her as you have others with misfortunes.
They should really contact Operation Smile inc. they have doctors all over the country and the globe who would do this surgery for free.

Like another poster said, there is no universal health care or even medicaid in Vietnam … how can you assume that the doctors and hospitals in Vietnam are even equipped to care for this girl … and FOR FREE??!?! People are now just trying to RAISE money for this operation so even in America it STILL ISN'T FREE. How would you get help for your daughter if you are constantly turned away (and this happens often in Vietnam .. none of you know this is a poverty-stricken communist country?) and have no money .. and do you think every remote village in the mountains is going to have an internet cafe? ppl this ill have to be discovered by a foreigner .. most ppl aren't so lucky.

And we bitch about our healthcare in the US? I just got back from Cambodia - the poverty and lack of access to medical care is unfathomable. Many poor countries don't have the funds to train and retain physicians, or even buy the necessary drugs/ equipment. My husband operated in Vietnam on a humanitarian mission — among other things, there were NO monitoring devices. Patients were simply put to sleep and bagged for air. Pulses, heartrate were taken manually. We need to be so thankful for being US citizens.

Yes I completely agree with all of the people who are hoping and praying for this girl. My family is donating to the cause and I think stories like these are so imporatant. Why not help?
