Girl To Have Surgery On Large Facial Tumor
Tumor Could Grow, Causing Vietnamese Teen To Suffocate
MIAMI — A Vietnamese girl with a 17-pound facial tumor is awaiting life-saving surgery that will restore her ability to eat and speak.
Lai Thi Dao, 15, suffers from a Schwannoma tumor that has been growing since she was 3. The tumor has severely disfigured her face and kept her from attending school.
"She had been with no treatment for the last 10 years," said Dr. Jesus Gomez, who is performing the surgery. "Something that started like a small black bean at the tongue now has become this huge tumor."
Doctors at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital said the tumor, likely the largest Schwannoma tumor ever reported in the world, has grown so large that she has difficulty talking, eating and sleeping. They said it would likely cut off her throat's passageway, which could cause her to suffocate.
The tumor is scheduled to be removed in a 10-hour surgery April 29.
The International Kids Fund is trying to raise money to help pay for her surgery.

It's beyond obvious that she is suffering, and selfish assholes only care that the picture is not aesthetically pleasing and might disrupt their precious moments over breakfast? It is interesting to read the way people are so quick to damn the parents of this child. Have you ever been to south-east Asia? Have you seen the absolute poverty some people live in? Many are illiterate and ignorant. But whatever the history of this little girl and her family is, I pray the operation is a success and she can lead a normal life. Can you imagine what the quality of her life would be like at the moment?
Re: Help Them – How can anyone be so ignorant. People who live in absolute poverty don't choose to. Contaminated water is one of the biggest killers of children world wide. These people don't have the knowledge, money or resources to do anything about it. Also, isn't Vietnam that country the United States played a massive role in destroying in the 70s?

You're ignorant. Tumors or other deformities can happen to children in the US too, but it would not be left untreated for that long. Vietnam is a young, war-torn country that has only had independence for several decades. Sadly, there isn't much assistance in the way of health care for the poor, it very much operates with the "survival of the fittest" mentality.
If things like this doesn't happen in the US, it's thanks to programs that provide health care to people who can't afford it, NOT thanks to the likes of you who seem to be a proponent of the "survival of the fittest" mentality. It's funny that you're boasting about the quality of health in the US when you don't seem like someone who believes in paying for others who would not be able to pay on their own.

How is she going to go get the surgery done when an average payday in Vietnam is ~ $5/day? There is not such thing as governmental assistance in Vietnam, so that too is not an option. Her parents are not horrible people for not getting her the operation sooner - they had no avenue in which to get help for her.
But of course - if you're stupid enough to make hateful claims towards her or her parents before even thinking about their living situation, you're probably too stupid to understand this post.
Good luck to this poor girl - everyone deserves the chance to lead a normal life. Good luck to the kind doctors who are helping her as well.
