Dying As Art?

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & True

schneiderg.jpg

Artist Gregor Schneider has German politicians and art curators up in arms, according to reports.

He's been actively searching for a terminally ill person to feature in his new exhibit.

The volunteer would spend his/her dying hours in an art gallery so the public can 'admire' the way some light plays on the flesh of a person gasping for the last breath.

Just like Abortion Girl's 'art' - we think that Schneider's death exhibit is just plain WRONG!!

An influential German gallery owner Beatrix Kalwa spoke for many German curators who rule out the idea of giving space to Schneider’s exhibit.

She says, “Existential matters like death, birth or the act of reproduction do not belong in a museum. There is a fundamental difference between portraying these acts in an art form, and showing them in actuality.”

Well, we would be okay with seeing people having sex in a museum!

Re: kyle – Excuse me, but are you trying to say that anyone in America is illiterate, and has an obsession with weapons?
For one, that's not true and is a horribly rasict statement.
Two, capitalization is a part of literacy my dear friend. :)

These things are sick! This is much like the Costa Rican artist Guillermo Vargas who is alleged to have starved a dog in a Nicaraguan art gallery. At least a dying person is able to choose if they wish to die in an "art" exhibit. A poor animal and an abort fetus do not.

WTF? First some guy ties up a dog and lets it starve to death (in the name of "art") and now THIS? What is wrong with people? I hope the art community isn't supporting this stuff!

this is terrible, it sounds like the same story i heard about an artist in south america doing this to stray dogs. tying them up in a corner at the gallery and letting the puppy starve to death, and then call it as art. really awful. what has teh world come to today

Perez, you gotta READ THIS COMMENT!
i know you're the kind of person who wants to be enlightened, and i'm assuming you think reading is important!
there's this excellent short story by dave eggers in "how we are hungry" that sounds just like this exhibit. if you read this short story, your views of this exhibit may change.
it sounds quite beautiful, actually… dying as you're surrounded by people.. and not people you necesaarily know, but people. strangers. watching. thinking about what you're going through and appreciating their life.

i mean, hopefully the volunteer is, like, old, you know, and they dont kill him for the sake of this art project. like, if he's dying anyway, then its cool.

I really don't see what the big deal is. Everyone dies, it's a fact of life, and if someone wants to spent their last hours opening peoples' minds to death, who are we to judge? They would also have something to be remembered by.
    -
It's like assisted suicide. If both parties want to do it, and it's their own life, then why not? Nobody's forcing you to go see the exhibit.
    -
I just read a comment about the dog being starved for art. Now THAT is wrong. There's a difference between someone agreeing to and wanting to do something like that with their own life, and animal cruelty.
