Famous Grizzly Bear Kills Trainer

Filed under: Film Flickers > Sad Sad > Will Ferrell

rockybear.JPG

How sad.

Stephan Miller, a 39 year old animal trainer from Big Bear Lake, CA, was attacked by a grizzly bear on Tuesday at the Predators in Action wild animal training center.

Two other handlers were working with the 5 year-old bear, named Rocky, when it attacked. The other two were able to pepper spray and subdue Rocky.

Luckily, there were no other injuries.

You've probably seen Rocky before. It's the same grizzly bear featured in Will Ferrell's film Semi-Pro, in which Ferrell appears to wrestle with the bear.

What could have gone so wrong???

Officials arrived to investigate the incident and Fish and Game spokesman, Harry Morse, said yesterday that his department would not decide whether Rocky would be euthanized since the attack occurred outside its jurisdiction.

It may be up to the San Bernandino county animal care officials to decide Rocky's fate.

Poor thing. He didn't asked to be locked up and trained like pet. He's a wild animal, after all. You can't really ever predict what they're going to go.

Just ask Siegfried and Roy!

Eerily enough, Randy Miller, the owner of the training location and cousin of the attacked trainer, was quoted in the local newspaper in February as saying Rocky is "the best working bear in the business." But continued by stating, "If one of these animals gets a hold of your throat, you're finished."

What will happen to poor Rocky???

Should they kill him?

They cannot kill him, but unfortunately now they cannot release him into the wild either. A zoo would be the best place for him.

Bears that are too accustomed to humans are a great danger in the wild. This is just a sad situation for the poor bear.

    102

This is not a pet pit bull who turned on a human, this is a wild animal, albeit "trained" to respond to commands, but nevertheless an animal that is more wild than tame, not a house pet. It would be a tragedy if he were to be killed - he should be sent to a zoo as it's now probably impossible to reintegrate him into the wild.

  3. Janae says – reply to this

    103

NO!! Animals shouldn't be killed for man's stupidity.

  4. Obsessed says – reply to this

    104

The proper thing to do is to send him to a sanctuary since he probably would not be able to live in the wild at this point and then the second thing to do is outlaw using wild animals to perform for the amusement of others, may all the people who exploit these animals suffer the same fate when they finally get to hell

  5. Human lover says – reply to this

    105

Helloooo! He killed a human being. What is wrong with this twisted world? It's an animal. They're here for our pleasure, not the reverse.Kill the beast!

  6. Rachel says – reply to this

    106

Well here's what I think…I don't think the bear should be euthanized because it's the people's fault that he's out of the wild anyway. Sure, this bear could have been trained since he was a cub, but animals have instincts that they can't ignore. I've also heard reports about animals who are taken out of the wild as babies after having lost their mothers to poachers or hunters and they experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and can have these fits of rage. It's not the bear's fault…don't kill him!

  7. ukangelface says – reply to this

    107

    NOOOOO…Don't kill him!!!!!!

He is a wild animal and is only doing what is instincts tell him. If you are a trainer, that is the risk you take!

  8. Ash says – reply to this

    108

Nope, it should not be killed. Like you said, it's a wild animal being trained and lock up against its natural will to perform. He was probably just in a bad mood. The death is a shame, but the bear does NOT deserve to die by any means.

  9. diana says – reply to this

    109

id kill someone too if i had to be in that terrible movie (semi-pro)

Re: __dani – Yes an animal that did not belong in the movie industry to begin with. An animal that belongs in the wild, not in training for some movie. An animal that was forced into doing something that was not in his nature. The humans are the bad ones here.

  14. Christine says – reply to this

    114

The was an incident years ago at a zoo in New York City. A kid had entered the polar bear exibit. The bear started to maul him and unfortunately was shot and killed. PS - The kid was dead by the time the bear was shot. Where's the justice for that poor bear. If I was locked up 24/7, gawked at all day long and someone came into MY domain, I'd maul them too.

  15. CYNDI says – reply to this

    115

I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT THINK ROCKY SHOULD BE EUTHANIZED. THESE ARE WILD ANIMALS THAT ARE KEPT IN CAPTIVITY, AND NOT ONLY THAT, I BELIEVE THEY ARE ABUSED TO BE TRAINED. THEY ARE NOT OURS TO USE AS ENTERTAINMENT. THEY WANT TO BE IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT. THIS BEAR DID NOT ATTACK THIS TRAINER BECAUSE ITS JUST MEAN, OR BAD, OR ANGRY, ITS NATURAL, ESPECIALLY UNDER THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES. PLEASE, PLEASE LET ROCKY LIVE!!!!!

  16. Terry says – reply to this

    116

Grizzly Bears are the #1 threat to the security and safety of the citizens of the US. Rocky and all grizzly bears should be killed for the future of our nation and for our children.

  17. sara says – reply to this

    117

The bear would probably rather be dead than be caged and forced to act in dumb movies with crappy 'actors'.

  18. Kristin says – reply to this

    118

This bear is a wild animal and should not be euthanized. This is the risk that you take when you are working with wild animals! I urge everyone to contact the San Bernadino animal control and urge them to make the right decision!!!

  19. Annie says – reply to this

    119

Hello NO! For once, Perez, I agree with you. I think it's sad killing him is even being discussed. He didn't ask for this life.

  20. Gia Jolie says – reply to this

  23. ME says – reply to this

    123

They should retire Rocky to a sanctuary. I have no sympathy for these idiots that train wild animals to do stupid tricks. Same goes for the Siegried and Roy guys. They were all just asking for it…

  24. tiffany says – reply to this

    124

This bear did not have a choice-he is an animal who will act upon instincts. Yes, tragic but the bear should be taken to a sanctuary to live the rest of its' life in peace.

  25. Lucy says – reply to this

No dont kill him! He is a GRIZZLY BEAR and maybe send him to zoo instead of kill him!

  26. teresa says – reply to this

These things happen. He does not deserve to die. Animal rights groups need to get on this and save this poor bear

  27. free the bear says – reply to this

    127

This is so sad. This bear should be acclamated to go back into the wild. It is not his fault. He was probably being abused at the time. Which in abuse I mean locked up in a cage 23 hours a day.

  28. mrs. kim says – reply to this

    128

Perez, I'm glad u brought up a VERY important point.

The bear is a wild animal and it should NOT be used, confined, trained, or for any humanly vain purpose. Rocky deserves to be set free in the wild.

ANY wild animal would attack when their natural necessities of life is taken away (i.e. natural habitat). How many ignorant humans does it need to be killed by these poor captured animals before they learn that u can not "keep" a wild animal.

  29. daelu says – reply to this

    129

Absolutely NOT!!! They took this poor animal from the wild and expect him to be docile?!?!? What's wrong with people?!?!???? They should retire him and take him to a sanctuary because obviously he can't go back to the wild since all he know is human interaction. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

  30. Joyous1 says – reply to this

    130

That is ridiculous to even consider euthanizing this bear. ITS A WILD ANIMAL!
    People are f'n idiots.

  31. A says – reply to this

    131

Re: Human lover – Asshole, do animals NOT feel pain? The only difference between animals and humans is that animals cannot relate the way we humans do. The other difference is that many animals out there actually act better than humans do at times.

  32. Jennabell says – reply to this

    132

no they shouldn't kill him! Like you said, he is a WILD ANIMAL, you cannot expect them to act like a tame dog or cat… geez when will people learn animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or be used for our entertainment!!!!

  33. bearsareawesome says – reply to this

    133

no! he's a fucking bear! he's supposed to attack people who try to keep him captive! jesus. the bear didn't go 'crazy', he went 'bear'.

  34. Leroy Jenkins says – reply to this

    134

Send him to the zoo or something, he should not work with people but there is no need to kill him.

  35. Charlotte says – reply to this

    135

This is a classic of try and make the cute wild animal a pet. It's ridiculous there is no way that it was the bears fault he is just acting as any bear would and i truely believe that nothing should happen to him people should have just respected him for the amazing creature that he is.

  36. anna says – reply to this

    136

    I agree with monica

  37. liz says – reply to this

Perez you better follow up on this.. i wanna know if he dies. Hope not!

  38. heather says – reply to this

    138

No matter how well trained an animal is, animals like grizzly bears will always have instinctive tendencies. It is part of their nature. And animal trainers take that risk when they have that type of job. It's unfortunate, but it's not the bears fault.

  39. julie says – reply to this

    139

no. in all cases of animals hurting humans, it is always the humans fault.

  40. LMC says – reply to this

    140

That poor bear! Just desserts for the trainer…that's what you get for making a career out of abusing animals.

    Leave that poor bear alone!!!

  41. Hello? says – reply to this

    141

I can tell you exactly why Rocky attacked his trainer: HE'S A BEAR. Not a teddy bear, not a domestic pet. He's a wild animal with instincts. If you decide to work around animals such as Rocky, YOU are consciously putting yourself in harm's way.

They have no right to kill Rocky because he didn't really do anything out of nature. They can't release him to the wild because he'll DIE. Just retire him and put him in some kind of preserve or something.

  42. Natalie says – reply to this

    142

he should absolutely NOT be killed! that's crazy! there is no reason to kill him - he didn't ask to be treated like a pet, he's a wild animal!!!

  43. Suzanne says – reply to this

    143

First off, no, I don't think the bear should be killed. That said, all of you people who are bad-mouthing the trainers and calling them names, that is disgusting. Someone just lost their life. How many of you are going to the movies and endorsing movies with animals in them?? As long as movies with "animal actors" are making money, they will continue to be made. So, unless you want to back up for meaningless words and start boycotting every movie or show with animals in it, I suggest you keep the uneducated and poorly thought about opinions to yourself.

  44. angela says – reply to this

    144

No way! He's a wild animal, you can't predict their actions. Stupid people! I bet the trainer wouldn't want him euthanized either. He would probably say, "I made a mistake and something just went wrong." Otherwise he would have killed tons of people by now!

  45. cassieland says – reply to this

    145

    NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The bear is an ANIMAL and its not his fault.
That is the risk these guys take and they know it. A trainer was trampled by an elephant who got spooked at an Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee and putting her down was not even thought about-they know what they are getting themselves into.

  46. Frank says – reply to this

    146

This breaks my heart :( I work for one of the big animal production companies and I can tell you that as a trainer, if I were to be killed by one of our animals, I would not want that animal punished in any way…they are after all, ANIMALS and working in this field, ya know the risk before you ever come in contact with any animal.
Also, just for the record…almost 100% of these animals are not taken from the wild, they are captive bred, rescued from stupid people or surplus animals from zoos and circuses that would be euthanized otherwise. It is almost impossible to obtain an permit on a state or federal level for a wild caught animal.
    Peace!

  47. Ast says – reply to this

    147

Once a wild animal has been reared and trained by people it can no longer be released to the wild, and often enough when they grow up they become too unpredictable and dangerous, and incidents like this happen all the time. This is not something unexpected, and was always in the realm of possiblities, so they should absolutely not kill the bear. There are some great animal rescue facilities out there that focus on animals like Rocky. They give them humane conditions to live in with enough safe human interaction to keep the animals satisfied.

  48. jenjenjen says – reply to this

    148

NO THEY SHOULD NOT KILL THE POOR THING IT IS AN ANIMAL

  49. Erica says – reply to this

  50. Truth says – reply to this

    150

Truth about Roy is that he was hung over and hit the cat - that's why he was attacked. Wild animals can only take so much, they are animals…period.

  51. Carrie says – reply to this

    151

DONT KILL ROCKY!!! He is a wild animal and like Perez said never asked to be caged and trained like a dog. When you work or are near wild animals you always take a risk. You shouldn't kill an animal for doing what its encoded to do from birth. Instinct cannot be erased, and I bet his trainers would agree.

  52. Radhika says – reply to this

    152

NO. Perez! You have the power to save him, just start a petition online, and we'll all sign it. Please, for Rocky's sake, could you start a petition?

  53. Emma says – reply to this

    153

no no no no no no no NEVER. release him in the wild or a nice zoo at least. DO NOT kill the poor WILD animal. It's not his fault. Imagine if animals ruled the world and we were taken from our homes to places where we can't understand them and they kill us when we act out and want to go back home!

  54. jordana says – reply to this

    154

ROCKY SHOULD LIVE! He needs to be released into the wild where he can roam free and kill all he wants lol. he doesn't belong in a cage with trainers in the first place, so it's their own fault for putting themselves in a dangerous and unpredictable situation!

  55. dman says – reply to this

    155

No way! That bear is NOT AT FAULT!

  56. Green says – reply to this

  57. Rubbish says – reply to this

This animal should not pay because he was forced out of his natural habitat and forced like a slave to perform. Just sad. I feel bad about the guy, but after all, this is a wild animal.

no they should not kill him! poor thing

  59. Lulu says – reply to this

    159

Why euthanize an animal for just being an animal? This is what grizzlies do, kill. WTF, with the fantastic computer generated animation they can do now, there's absolutely no sense in keeping these animals as "trained". I call bullshit on the mere idea of killing the bear!!!

  61. Izzy says – reply to this

    161

No way should they put the bear down… They didn't ask to be trained and they're still wild animals. Leave them be and stop training them

  62. kae says – reply to this

    162

No, they should not kill him. Does an animal actually ask to be trained to be put in the movies? No. Does an animal have the ability to physically sign it's signature on a contract waiving his rights to act as he would in his own natural environment? No. And even though this is not possible, his/her rights are stripped anyway. And when something goes wrong, they decide to kill the animal. So wrong….

  63. jamie says – reply to this

You just can't feel sorry for people who spend there lives torturing animals that should be out in the wild and are forcing them into the "animal acting busines".

Grizzly bears are supposed to be out in the wilderness, not living in los angeles.

No they should not kill the bear, but they will. It's not know he knows better.

How do you kill a bear for acting like a bear? The people who chose to lock him up and train him to perform are the ones who need to be euthanized. I'm sick of people disgarding animals when they don't do what WE want them to do. This is just sickening.

  82. Bariatric Surgery Gummi says – reply to this

    182

This is what makes me so angry. They take a wild animal and "tame" it. Then, when it's wild behavior comes forth, the bear is going to be punished. Who knows what Rocky was thinking? Maybe he was just trying to subdue the trainer, or playing. Rocky should be living with his brother and sister bears in the wild, fishing out of the rivers. Not performing and forced to live in a cage. Anyone know who to write to, so we can let them know our feelings?

  83. fuck PETA says – reply to this

    183

To all of you morons, how would you feel if it was your dad's life whom a dumb, fucking, worthless waste of fur ended?

I'm sure you wouldn't be saying that the bear's life is so worthy and yadda yadda yadda. At the end of the day, HUMANS are the only important animals on earth. Yes, the animal was wild. So what? Lots of other things are primitive by nature yet we ALLLLLL take advantage of that. If I were the guy's family, I would personally deliver the fatal blow.

  84. Kimberly says – reply to this

    184

They better not euthanize that poor bear. It is a wild animal's instict to attack when feeling threatened, so he was only doing what was natural to him. They obviously can't release him into the wild because he's been captive for so long that he wouldn't know how to fend for himself, but they could at least send him to a zoo where he can live out the rest of his days with minimal human contact.

  85. Jess says – reply to this

    185

NO WAY. Any good animal trainer will tell you that if an animal attackes it is the trainers fault, not the animals'.

  86. Aubree says – reply to this

    186

No they really shouldn't kill the bear. Like you said, they are wild animals. They aren't house pets. You can't kill it for following its instinct. The people who know this the most are the trainers, and I'm sure if he was still alive he would agree.

  87. WHO GIVES A RATS ASS? says – reply to this

  92. Lisa says – reply to this

No, they should not euthanize the animal. Leave the animals ALONE. They are not here for our entertainment!

  93. Mary says – reply to this

    193

You said it. These are WILD ANIMALS. The trainers know that their behavior is unpredictable and knowingly decide to take the risk. A bear shouldn't be killed because he acts like a fucking bear. Absolutely ridiculous. He needs to go to a sanctuary because he wouldn't know what the fuck to do to survive in the wild.

  94. susan says – reply to this

    194

How is it the bear's fault? The bear can't even go back into the wild, since its life has been altered by people who wanted to make money off of it! Put it in a zoo, which is like jail, I guess… But kill it? That would be totally unfair.

  95. Amy Pie says – reply to this

    195

If they kill Rocky, that's just wrong! Hes an animal and should of never been locked up to begin with!!!

  96. julie says – reply to this

    196

They should not kill him….. like you said, it's not his fault someone tried to 'train' him. he's a wild animal and those instincts will kick in. He probably can't be released back in the wild as he wouldn't know how to fend for himself. such a shame.

  97. anonymous says – reply to this

    197

Animals are not put on this earth for the pleasure and use of humans, and the earth does not exist FOR US. I wish that people would realize we are a small PART of the earth, not her ruler. to think we own the earth and control it is a delusion. How did we get into this way of thinking, that animals are ours to do with as we wish, that it is OUR RIGHT to remove animals from the wild and train them for whatever we want.
This bear cannot be released into the wild. Unfortunately, his life as a bear has been ruined and he will always have to live in captivity. It is not his fault, though, and the attack was not unprovoked. If you force an animal to do something, be prepared for the risks. Animals will defend themselves if they feel scared or threatened, as Rocky probably did/does.
I hope they find a nice sanctuary for Rocky where he can live out his life in as much peace and comfort as is possible for him. It's unfortunate that this happened, but it is the fault of the humans involved, and not of Rocky. I am pretty sure we are all familiar with the risks of trying to tame wild animals.
