Famous Grizzly Bear Kills Trainer

Filed under: Film Flickers > Sad Sad > Will Ferrell

rockybear.JPG

How sad.

Stephan Miller, a 39 year old animal trainer from Big Bear Lake, CA, was attacked by a grizzly bear on Tuesday at the Predators in Action wild animal training center.

Two other handlers were working with the 5 year-old bear, named Rocky, when it attacked. The other two were able to pepper spray and subdue Rocky.

Luckily, there were no other injuries.

You've probably seen Rocky before. It's the same grizzly bear featured in Will Ferrell's film Semi-Pro, in which Ferrell appears to wrestle with the bear.

What could have gone so wrong???

Officials arrived to investigate the incident and Fish and Game spokesman, Harry Morse, said yesterday that his department would not decide whether Rocky would be euthanized since the attack occurred outside its jurisdiction.

It may be up to the San Bernandino county animal care officials to decide Rocky's fate.

Poor thing. He didn't asked to be locked up and trained like pet. He's a wild animal, after all. You can't really ever predict what they're going to go.

Just ask Siegfried and Roy!

Eerily enough, Randy Miller, the owner of the training location and cousin of the attacked trainer, was quoted in the local newspaper in February as saying Rocky is "the best working bear in the business." But continued by stating, "If one of these animals gets a hold of your throat, you're finished."

What will happen to poor Rocky???

Should they kill him?

    302

Are you kidding me? It is a wild animal…not a fucking Golden Retriever…Wild Animals should not be trained and used for entertainment and then killed when something goes wrong…It's too bad that someone died…but honestly, when you play with fire you get burnt!

Re: douchenozzleRe: Lauren – If they release a bear who has killed a man into the wild he WILL kill again. He now knows that he can kill us for food if he wants and that is a learned behavior he will repeat. That would be neglegent.

    Re: Joe
They can still put him into a wild animal refuge or (GOD FORBID) a zoo. I hate Zoo's, they make me feel BAD as hell for the animals, but that is a better option than killing a bear for acting like a damn bear.

  8. DJ says – reply to this

    308

GOOD, hope he kills all the people that locked him up and then breaks free and runs in the wild !

  9. Candice says – reply to this

    309

They shouldn't kill the bear because like everyone else is saying, he didn't want to be locked up. I feel sorry for the man that was killed of course but the bear is a naturally wild animal and you can't predict their next move.

  10. Don't kill them for being who they are! says – reply to this

    310

WHEN WILL HUMANS LEARN THAT WILD ANIMALS ARE WILD!!!
EVEN TRAINING DOES NOT TAKE THE WILD OUT OF THEM!

  11. Joe says – reply to this

    311

Re: er – He was probably saved. Most captive bears are not simply taken from their environment if it is a healthy habitat. Animal activist groups as well as forest rangers would never allow this. It was probably abandoned as a cub by its mother like so many bears and most likely wouldve died a young excruciating death if "left it alone" to fend for itself. At least its had a full life and will be put down humanely and without any pain.

  12. Melissa says – reply to this

    312

No!!!!! The poor bear doesn't know any better. The people that train these animals know what they are capable so they're taking the risks. Put the bear back where he belongs… in the wild.

  13. Angela says – reply to this

    313

A wild animal should never be expected to act anything but wild. They work on instinct. They should not be made to perform. The trainers are at fault. The bear should be able to go to a sanctuary where it can live the rest of its life out in peace.

  18. lisa says – reply to this

    318

NO he should not be killed !! He was only doing what comes natural to animals. THEY have the instinct in them from day one and we as humans did this to that bear. He is an animal and does not deserve death but to be released to an animal sancuary where he will live out the rest of his days.

  19. Matt says – reply to this

    319

No. Wild animals do NOT belong in zoos they belong in the wild like their name implies. When will people learn that animals want to be left alone.
    Go Veg!!!!

  20. madi says – reply to this

    320

nothing should happen to the bear….the people who decided to train it as a pet get whatever they have coming to them in that sort of situation…it's a bear!! i don't even know why anybody's acting surprised it happened in the first place…

  21. Alex says – reply to this

    321

This is not an eye for an eye. Rocky didn't kill out of malice. He has a right to live and live freely. People take risk when they temper with that. I hope a sanctuary rescues him from this death sentence.

  22. rachel says – reply to this

    322

it's a fucking grizzly bear you idiots! not a little pet to be trained and messed with! they had better leave the bear alone, since it's just doing what GRIZZLY BEARS DO! what fuckfaces to even contemplate killing him. i hope he breaks out and fucks up anyone who has ever fucked with animals. go bear!

  23. Amanda says – reply to this

    323

What went wrong? Rocky is a wild animal. He is not for our entertainment. He should not be killed for acting on his natural instincts. He should be placed in a safe sanctuary so that he can live out his days. Poor Rocky. He is also a victim in this situation.

  24. Tori says – reply to this

    324

You can look at this as a no win for that poor bear, they can't release him back in the wild WHERE THEY SHOULD HAVE FUCKING LEFT HIM
If they keep doing what they have been doing with him, hes going to snap again, because ummm DUH HES WILD

Find a nice place for him to live, kinda like one of those animal rescue places thats are thousands of acres

Re: jstmekathy – I was just waiting for some IDIOT to say those dumb-ass words - "Oh, the bear now has the taste for human blood" That is the most ignorant misconception. You actually think that the bear gets the 'taste of human blood' and goes on a hunt for more human blood?!?! You are a moron and I was just waiting for a moron to say that!!! Congtrats - you get the "DUMB ASS OF THE DAY" award.
BTW- NO, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THIS BEAR BE PUT DOWN!!! It was a terrible accident, but it's a very risky profession - his trainer knew that. When a airplane crashes, do we close down the FAA? Do we killl the pilot if he was a survivor?

  31. Lysette says – reply to this

    331

NO! They should not euthanize that bear! You said it. He is a wild animal that didn't ask to be trained like a pet. He swings an arm the wrong way and pow, a human can get killed. That's part of the risk these trainers take. That bear should get to live in a sanctuary somewhere, stress free. It will be an absolute outrage if they kill that bear for being a bear.

Re: sarahbears – I love this post. Couldn't have said it better.

They better not destroy this poor bear.

After all, it was human decision to turn this wild animal into a trained robot. Plus, this guy made the decision to go do this everyday for work.

  34. ANIMAL ADVOCATE says – reply to this

    334

DONT KILL THE BEAR. IT IS UNETHICAL TO CONDEMN AN ANIMAL FOR DOING WHAT IS INSTINCTUAL. ANY ANIMALS THAT ARE TAKEN FROM THEIR NATURAL HABITAT AND FORCED TO WORK FOR THE PROFIT OF HUMANS SHOULD BE PRAISED FOR NOT REACTING BADLY AND THOSE WHICH DO REACT SHOULD NOT BE RETALIATED AGAINST FOR SOMETHING THAT THEY ARE DOING OUT OF FEAR OR INSTINCT. IF SOMEONE TOOK YOU FROM YOUR HOME, KEPT YOU IN A SMALL SPACE AND FORCED YOU TO PERFORM AGAINST YOUR WILL SO THEY COULD MAKE MONEY OFF OF YOU WOULD YOU NOT BE INCLINED TO REACT LIKE THIS BEAR DID?

  35. MomV4 says – reply to this

    335

BOYCOTT ALL ANIMALS IN ENTERTAINMENT!!!! Never go to a Ringling Brothers Circus!!!! Animals are not ours to wear, eat or anything. They deserve their place on this planet just like humans!!! They feel, sense and are intelligent!! Leave them the fuck alone! :(

  44. Alyssa says – reply to this

    344

Bears are wild animals. If you're stupid enough to try and "tame" one, you deserve to killed. It pisses me off when someone gets mauled by a bear, mountain lion, tiger, gorilla, whatever, and then the animal gets killed for doing what it's supposed to do by instinct: DEFEND IT'S TERRITORY.

  45. LA REINE says – reply to this

    345

This is BS. Im sad that this man is dead. But Im also sure that this bear isnt the happiest since he isnt in his natural habitat and he is a damn puppet for humans pleasure. That bear didnt go crazy, he went BEAR!!! What the hell do you expect a wild animal to act like? I hate ZOOS and I hate CIRCUSES… They abuse the animals I dont care what they say…

I smell animal abuse. That grizzly finally had enough. That is a little rough justice.

  50. lola says – reply to this

    350

He's a bear just being a bear. Most bears would kill us all if we got too close to them. That's why we should just leave them alone. To be honest, I bet the trainer wouldn't want him to be killed, either. I'm sure the trainer knew the risks of working with the bear. Animals don't have our moral codes about "murder" so shouldn't be punished as such. I'm glad to see so many people don't want the bear to be killed. I was worried people would want to see the bear "punished" for being the wild animal he is.

  51. Ines says – reply to this

THEY SHOULD NOT KILL HIM!!!! indeed the bear never asked to be locked up and used for business…

They better not kill that bear. Why do we think we can train WILD ANIMALS!!!! We are acting stupid wonder why hes attacking people.

  60. ang says – reply to this

    360

Of course they shouldn’t kill the bear that’s what its naturally inclined to do, wild animal trainers I’m sure are very aware of the risks when they take up the profession it’s ignorant to think “it couldn’t happen to me” and kill an animal because it does what it was born to do.

  61. nina says – reply to this

    361

    NOOO!!!! SAVE THE BEAR

  62. Christie says – reply to this

    362

This is why they are called WILD animals it doesn't matter if they are raised in captivity if they feel threatened they will attack you! People are so stupid to think that they can train them they should set Rocky free!!

  63. Sera says – reply to this

    363

Killing the poor bear would be evil! Wild animals do not belong behind bars! How many animals and people have to suffer and/or die before this exploitation stops?

  64. do not kill this bear says – reply to this

    364

Do n ot kill this bear. He is only doing what nature intended. Nature did not intend for this poor animal to be entertainment for stupid people. Boycott any movie that has trained animals in it. Boycott any circus and rodeo. Leave the poor animals alone.

  65. Bronze says – reply to this

    365

Ttly agree w/ Perez. Poor Rocky didnt ask 2 b caged, and I think hes being relatively cooperative. He made a movie, 4 heavens sake!

  66. Jenn says – reply to this

    366

    Free the bear!!!

  67. lynda says – reply to this

    367

NO!!!! grizzly bears are not pets…they are wild animals and if you are working with one you know the risks involved. it is very sad what happened to teh trainer because i am sure he loved the bear and treated him well, but when it comes down to it…it is still a grizzly bear and you can't ever be sure what it will do.

  68. Theresa says – reply to this

    368

no they SHOULD NOT kill Rocky!!!!!!!The animal is wild. What he did was a basic natural instinct and a wild animal can never be tamed or domesticated and will turn on a human on a flip of a dime. They know this!!!!!!

  69. Ashley G says – reply to this

    369

When you decide to work with a WILD animal, you know and accept the risks that come with it. I don't understand why people act SO SURPRISED when a wild animal that has been purposefully put in the public, attacks and kills a human. Rocky didnt look at his trainer and think "owner"… the bear sees trainer and thinks "another animal in his territory". I guess this goes to show that it takes a little bit longer than a lifetime to domesticate a wild animal. Look at the long and enduring time it took for dogs and cats to be domesticated. Thousands of CENTURIES. Rocky shouldn't have to die because of our stupidity.

  70. amber says – reply to this

    370

Why should they kill him? He is a wild animal. I cant stand this about the Human race. Why do we have the right to play "god" Wild animals have wild instincts that we cant control. They knew this going into it. I feel really bad for the family of the deceased but its not like bears have knowledge of right and wrong. I can understand maybe retiring him to a zoo where he will be able to live a happy normal (somewhat life) but dont kill him for being a bear and doing what bears do.

  71. maggie says – reply to this

    371

Did you see the clip from the movie of Will F. hitting the bear in the
face???? Shame on him. The bear did not ask to be part of that.
And Will F. saying in a interview he knew something was wrong with the
bear. No Will, something is wrong with you. Sorry to say. Think about
this. The bear did not know this was a "Movie" and not real. Shame on
everyone that was a part of this. Do NOT kill this bear.

  72. Mike says – reply to this

    372

This bear and others like it were once pets of people who think it is okay to take animals away from their environment. Since the people cannot take care of the animal anymore, and the animal is now dependent on humans, they are sent to organization such as these. These people cannot free the bear because they cannot survive in the wild. I have personally met Rocky and know that his favorite food is pizza. He only eats human food, because this was what he was taught before he was given to the animal sanctuary. Bears can be trained as they are smart animals, but accidents happen and the trainers know the risk. Rocky's income goes to feed other animals such as this animal sanctuary in Phelan, CA. http://4everwild.org/ Please don't confuse the trainers as the people who stole Rocky from his environment. They dedicated their lives to him as he would die if returned to nature.

  73. Rocky jr. says – reply to this

    373

no i don't think the bear should be killed nor do i think it should live the rest of his life in a cage …….for killing the trainer….i knew that big bear would snap some day!

  74. Liz says – reply to this

    374

Wild animals were not meant to be trained in the first place….the trainer probably got what he had coming to him!!!

  75. Retire the bear to alaska says – reply to this

you know when the "wild" bear ate that stupid asshole in alaska and his girl friend yeah well that bear got killed AND we didn't even get to see the nasty remains!!!!
I say let that bear go and let him kill some fish and live it up in photographs as "the bear who got out and retired"

  76. Miz D says – reply to this

I guess he didn't like how the movie came out. At ALL.

  77. lilya says – reply to this

    377

I'm sorry he's an animal. As much as people would like to hold animals to moral standards it's pointless. How many times does this have to happen before it sinks in that animals will kill other animals and people because it is in their nature and you can't very well reason with a freaking bear. So is he not cute big ol rocky anymore??? I don't get it.

  78. Desiree says – reply to this

    378

They shouldnt kill him, that just pisses me off..this what these people get for taking a wild animal out of its natural environment.

  80. alwaysclassy says – reply to this

    380

NO WAY should they kill him. As everyone else is saying, the bear is wild and probably had a reason for his attack, or maybe he was tired of being USED for human entertainment. Can't blame him. I almost feel BAD for being human sometimes.. the human race does not have the right to do whatever they want and tamper with human nature!!!

  81. sarah says – reply to this

    381

OF COURSE THEY SHOULDN'T KILL HIM!!! HES A FUCKING WILD ANIMAL WHO DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE LIVING IN A FUCKING CAGE!!! WILD ANIMALS NEED SPACE, AND MOST LIKELY WOULD NOT ENJOY HAVING SOMEONE POKE A STICK AT IT AND TRY TO MAKE IT STAND ON ITS KIND LEGS. ITS CRUEL AND UNFAIR TO THAT POOR BEAR WHO WAS PROBABLY PROVOKED OR JUST FUCKING SICK OF HAVING HIS FOOD FED TO HIM FROM A METAL SLOT IN A CAGE.

    395

no do not kill the bear!!!! LEAVE THE ANIMALS ALONE!!!!

  96. Drea says – reply to this

    396

they definitely shouldn't kill him. Animals aren't here for our entertainment. When you take an animal that is NOT meant to be domesticated and try to do so, then you have to expect that something bad could eventually happen; it does all the time. I'm not sure why it's such a shock. I mean, after all…."trained" or not, it's stilla bear. They're not meant to be in movies or be in circuses or ride bikes or any of that shit people force them to do for their own entertainment.

  97. Katy says – reply to this

    397

ABsolutely NOT!! The bear was just acting on his instincts (which was Natural) while what the trainer was doing was NOT! Any trainer that works with large animals is Well Aware of the risks they are taking. While I'm sorry the trainer died, it was an occupational hazard he was willing to take!! I hope all the Animal Rights Groups get out in force and prevent this tragedy from being compunded by the slaughter of this innocent animal!

  98. andrea says – reply to this

    398

THEY SHOULD NOT KILL THE BEAR. Like Perez said, they took a wild animal and made him do tricks. It is unfair to kill the bear for only doing what is in his nature. I feel terrible for the trainer but unfortunately, you can take an animal out of the wild but you can't take the wild out of the animal. The late trainer probably understood this fact. RIP.

  100. dominique says – reply to this

    400

they absolutely better not kill that bear!! it's a WILD ANIMAL!!! it's not like this is the first trained bear that attacked someone, people in that line of work are well aware of the risk they are taking with their lives. im sure if that trainer were able to speak with us, he would tell us that he does NOT the bear euthanized.
