Famous Grizzly Bear Kills Trainer

Filed under: Film Flickers > Sad Sad > Will Ferrell

rockybear.JPG

How sad.

Stephan Miller, a 39 year old animal trainer from Big Bear Lake, CA, was attacked by a grizzly bear on Tuesday at the Predators in Action wild animal training center.

Two other handlers were working with the 5 year-old bear, named Rocky, when it attacked. The other two were able to pepper spray and subdue Rocky.

Luckily, there were no other injuries.

You've probably seen Rocky before. It's the same grizzly bear featured in Will Ferrell's film Semi-Pro, in which Ferrell appears to wrestle with the bear.

What could have gone so wrong???

Officials arrived to investigate the incident and Fish and Game spokesman, Harry Morse, said yesterday that his department would not decide whether Rocky would be euthanized since the attack occurred outside its jurisdiction.

It may be up to the San Bernandino county animal care officials to decide Rocky's fate.

Poor thing. He didn't asked to be locked up and trained like pet. He's a wild animal, after all. You can't really ever predict what they're going to go.

Just ask Siegfried and Roy!

Eerily enough, Randy Miller, the owner of the training location and cousin of the attacked trainer, was quoted in the local newspaper in February as saying Rocky is "the best working bear in the business." But continued by stating, "If one of these animals gets a hold of your throat, you're finished."

What will happen to poor Rocky???

Should they kill him?

trainers assume the risk — and well very sad, this one paid the price. how's that the bear's fault? How would You react if you were torn from your home, thrown in a cage and forced to perform tricks for others amusement? Think ya might take a bit out of someone's ass eventually? Why is killing the bear even option? Hey f#ckee — return him to the wild where he belongs!

killing the bear shouldn't even be an option
its a fucking bear! its got a pretty big instinct to hurt people, so leave it the fuck alone!

YOU ARE SO RIGHT PEREZ - THEY INTERFERED WITH NATURE - BEAR DOES NOT DESERVE DEATH PENALTY FOR COMMITTING MURDER -FOR OBVIOUS REASON = IS A WILD ANIMAL

  8. Julianna says – reply to this

    408

They should not kill Rocky. Bears are not meant to be trained nor are they meant to be on t.v. It's sad that the trainer died, but the bear's an animal. What do you expect?

  9. Bearlover says – reply to this

    409

Hell no, they should not kill that bear. And if you asked the trainer he killed, I bet he'd say don't kill him either. The trainer knew what he was up against and Rocky is a wild animal…unpredictable. I't's not Rocky's fault, he's a bear who has been held against his will all his life. Treat him with the respect he deserves. I pray he will be. I'm sick of goddamn humans mistreating and disrespecting animals.

  10. Meaghan says – reply to this

    410

    — no, they shouldn't kill him, they shouldn't have had him in the first place. he is a wild animal, NOT A PET. he probably got sick of being mistreated or treated like a pet dog or cat. people need to stop "adopting" these animals to train them for the general population to ogle at. next time you're contemplating visiting a zoo or circus, look around online at how these animals are treated BEHIND the scenes.

  11. Myrna says – reply to this

    411

How much money has that bear made people ??? Grizzlies are endangered and people are over-populating the world. Enough animals are killed in the name of money. Let the ego go and accept reality.Bears will be bears. He wants to climb trees, eat salmon and hibernate, not make crappy movies like Semi Pro.

  12. Mandy says – reply to this

    412

NNNNNOOOOO! It 's not the bears fault, he's just doing what's natural to him, he's a predator! Anyway, everybody knows that you don't fuck with a wild animal and expect not to eventually get attacked! It's the order of nature.

  13. HELL NOOOOOO says – reply to this

    413

Absolutely not. If they kill that bear I hope PETA hunts them down and sets their houses on fire.

  18. woody's girl says – reply to this

    418

yes I think the bear should be put down, the bear will no longer be able to work and the bear certainly could not be "let free" I feel that this is the correct decision. It is a bear and it did kill a HUMAN. bye bye Rocky.

  19. Lacey says – reply to this

    419

Sad? Yes, but a trained wild animal is still a wild animal. It shouldn't be put down because people don't get that concept.

  20. alicia says – reply to this

    420

i mean, its definitely sad, my heart goes out to stephen's family, but putting the bear down wont fix it. they're wild animals with instincts. when you have a job like that you know the risks

  21. jericho says – reply to this

    421

hells no!! Dont kill the bear, if the trainer who was killed had survived, he wouldn't have wanted anything to happen to Rocky. As a trainer, you need to understand that these animals are unpredictable, and as such, it is not the bears fault, but the trainers fault that he attacked. They also shouldn't trust him around humans anymore, so perhaps he should just be sent to a zoo or a wildlife refuge where he can just run around and be a bear!

  22. melissa says – reply to this

    422

the poor bear shouldn't be killed because humans were stupid enough to try to train a FREAKING BEAR. its a BEAR people not a bunny, DON'T try to get it to be cute and cuddly…now thats just asking for it

  23. Christine says – reply to this

    423

They should NOT kill this poor animal. Wild animals are not meant to be locked up and trained for acting or whatever other purposes. They should be allowed to roam free in their natural habitats.

    429

Technically the bear's career was over after appearing in a Will Ferrer movie.

If only Rocky had snapped during the making of that movie and killed W. Ferrer perhaps the movie would have been better.

They shouldn't kill the bear, it was just suffering from post-Will Ferrer-depression.

  30. FERRIS says – reply to this

    430

PLEASE SAVE ROCKY!!!! HE DIDN'T CHOOSE TO BE TAKEN OUT OF HIS HABITAT. HE ACTED PURELY ON INSTINCT.

ALSO..THEY SERIOUSLY NEED TO JUST STOP USING LIVE WILD ANIMALS IN FILMS. THAT'S WHAT MODERN TECHNOLOGY IS FOR!!!

    SAVE ROCKY!!!!!!!

  31. Ashley says – reply to this

    435

Wild animals such as bears elephants, tigers or lions should never be used as entertainment. These animals habitats are being taken away everyday. None of these species live in wild habitat. They all live in protected areas. These species that are trained for entertainment are either taken from the wild or breed to be owned by corporations that chain them up and do not feed them properly. It is a disgusting trade that gets animals taken away from them ev eryday by the american zooological association. Look up the Hawthorne Corporation. Many of their elephants died from mal nutrition and being chained up in warehouses. Foremost, any person that works with animals takes the risk of being killed by the wild animal they are working with. This bear could of had a bad memory of being hit or pushed negatively to do a trick, and something the trainer did, triggered that memory, and caused him to freak. It happens alot in the zoological work, and the animals should never be killed for following their instinct with something they are forced to do. DO NOT GO TO CIRCUSES OR WATCH SHOWS WITH WILD ANIMALS BEING PUSHED TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS NOT IN THEIR NATURE.

  36. Hagtastic says – reply to this

    436

    NO WAY!

  37. Veronica says – reply to this

    437

We live in such a throw away society. In the case of this poor bear, Rocky, he was taken from a natural environment at a very young age, beaten into submission (you can't make a huge bear do stupid tricks through positive reinforcement), and then was forced to interact with humans (and Will Ferell at that!). It was only a matter of time before he snapped the head off of some whip-wielding wacko trainer. And after all is said and done, this bear will just be thrown away because he was a wild animal forced to be human… Sick and sad.

  38. Kim says – reply to this

    438

This story really upsets me. Perez, you're right. This bear did not ask to be locked up and be made to perform by humans. This animal belonged in the wilderness, not in a cage. I would hope that the officials in charge of this case are not so ignorant as to not understand this. This bear does NOT deserve to die.

  39. Brae says – reply to this

    439

The answer is soooo obvious…IT'S NOT THE BEARS FAULT IT'S A BEAR, people need to learn that animals such as lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) are not pets and shouldn't be treated as such. It's their natural instinct, the trainer got what he deserved!

  40. J.Roo says – reply to this

    440

I'm watching this story as we speak, on E entertainment television. This story is the most disgusting, appalling story I have heard in a long while. Rocky is a WILD ANIMAL, the mere fact that he attacked his "trainer" only confirms this. HE WAS NOT BORN FOR OUR ENTERTAINMENT. Rocky is currently locked in a cage, by himself, outside. He deserves to be living, free, in the woods, were bears belong.

As a lifelong hunter, and someone who actually RESPECTS wildlife, I can tell you it would be a travesty to put this animal down. Carnivores KILL. IT'S WHAT THEY DO. These animals CANNOT be domesticated or tamed, even if born in captivity. If you are around one, you live or die at the animals whim. The people who capture and train these animals are the ones who should be put down.

  58. b says – reply to this

    458

I don't think it's the animals fault at all and it would really make me sad to know that they put him down. He definitely should not be around people anymore now that they know he will attack. I would hope they could find a refuge for him. Even if he was born into captivity he still has wild instincts. Animals will attack you when they feel threatened or angered, think about your cat or dog getting pissed off at you and amplify that by 500.

  59. Grizzly Adams says – reply to this

    459

Now that the bear has tasted blood, he's done. Time to put a bullet in his head. While they're at it…put one in PETA's head too. Better yet, feed PETA to the bear…then, put a bullet in his head. grrrrrrrr…mmmmm…..bang

  60. Grizzly Adams says – reply to this

    460

you're correct, they were not put on Earth for our pleasure (ie: you dog, cat, bird, hamster)….they were put here to take a spot on our table…between the carrots and the mashed potatos

  61. Quinn says – reply to this

    461

This is a case of man versus nature; and man got his ass kicked. Wild animals are unpredictable. You can take the animal out of the wild but you can't take the wild out of the animal…and on and on the cliches go. The moral of the story is: Rocky should not be punished for doing what comes to him naturally. Rocky's animal instinct took over. Period.

  62. Anonymous says – reply to this

    462

See everyone thinks that same thing. This bear should not be killed. It is a chance that we take by taking them out of their rightful home, the wild, and locking them and up and training them and making money off of them. They are wild animals no matter how much we may want to say that they are trained and tame. There is always going to be that chance and trainers themselves know this. So even for a trainer to take the chance of working with them and training them, that is on them! They know that the risks are very real and they know what they are getting themselves into. There is no gaurentee that this animal wont turn on them. I know this sounds gay but they have bad days just like us only they don't have a voice to express that so they can't say leave me alone or can you give me some space please. There are sighns im sure……….wether or not a trainer is going to pay attention to that or not is up to them. But I am sure that it is obvious that they don't want to perform or train on certain days, but just like anything else I am sure that money talks and I am sure that they push the animal to work even when it doesn't want to, well then so be it if it is going to attack its trainer, people should know that that is a very real factor, very real.

  63. debbi says – reply to this

    463

no way should this animal be killed-it's a wild animal and that is the chance humans take for taking them out of there habitat and wanting them to behave as people! please don't hurt this animal-set it free or let it live it's life out in a zoo.

Under no circumstances should they put the bear down. It is a wild animal, it should be treated like a wild animal and not expected to act differently. I really feel sorry for the bear, and the man he killed. But killing the bear will only make things worse. How about STOP MAKING THE BEAR WORK! and let him live out the rest of his days at an animal reserve with minimal human contact especially if he could live with other bears.

  72. From Montana says – reply to this

    472

Listen, I know the idea of the bear being euthanized is sad, but this isn't the first time a grizzly bear has ever attacked and killed a human. They're even capable of killing and EATING a human, a d have done so. Unfortunately, there's no way this bear could be released into the wild, because he now has the taste for human blood. He'd most likely attack and kill another human if he had a chance, like a hiker, or even a Fish and Game employee, etc. The way it's usually handled is euthanization. It's a grim fact in these circumstances. I don't like it any more than anyone else on here does, but those advocating a release into the wild as a better option aren't being entirely realistic, or maybe aren't looking at how areas of the country that actually have grizzly bears as a part of daily life tend to handle things.

  73. Hello Kitty says – reply to this

    473

No because he is a wild animal, and they made mroe than enough money off of him, that he should be able to live his life out as the wild animal that he is.

These bastards have no right to decide to put the Bear down, just because it killed somebody! They should put him in an animal center and stop training him and leave him alone. Or if possible, put him back out in the wilde!
Stop killing animals because they hurt people!!! It's their instinct, they are wild, that's waht they are made of. And the people who try to train a bear fully know that they are taking risks. They have to fucking assume the risks!!!!!

  79. sam says – reply to this

    479

I totally disagree with putting wild animals into films or tv or in a circus I even dislike zoos…I think animals should be left where they are and to do their own thing….But I think the bear has to be put down it's really sad and it's not actually the bears fault but the bear can't go back into the wild ok it's not absolutely domisticated but it's ndomisticated enough that it would be pretty hard to survive on it's own after been looked after for a long time by humans it would probaley go to where humans are to get fed and could cause rick.

So sadly for it's own good I think the bear should be put down.

    Re: fuck PETA – 1.

So #183 - YOU wrote “to all of you morons, how would you feel if it was your dad's life whom a dumb, #$%, worthless waste of fur ended?”. The idiot who died should not have been “training”, “working with” “feeding” “keeping” or anything at all with a wild animal, and if he/does so, they should be prepared to pay the consequences. This is a wild animal, not a pet, and to subject these animals to “your world” (which is nothing short of torture), well what do you expect should happen, the animal was simply being an animal and doing what comes natural. So I was just wondering if you have been educated past kindergarten??? Actually, don't bother answering that, I know the answer.

    GOOD thing he got killed.
not because i hate him, but because youre not supposed to train and lock up bears and use them for other things than just being a bear.
if they kill this bear, id be so pissed.

i say: let the bear go!

anyone who wants to kill the bear is completely evil.
this bear wanted to be free and wild.
and they caught him and ruined him.
i know its too late for him to be in the wild.
but put him in a santuary.
but PLEASE DONT KILL THIS INNOCENT BEAR!

perez.. please post an update about the decision about this bear!

    LEAVE BEARS ALONE!
    PROTECT ROCKY!!
    WILD MEANS WILD!
    TRAINER DID THIS TO HIMSELF!!
LET ANIMALS BE WILD AND KEEP THEM IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT!
    PROTECT BEARS!
    PROTECT ALL ANIMALS!

Anyone who gets into the business of training wild animals knows the risk. Death is a possibility, and the bear should not be punished for simply being a bear.

You can never really domesticate anything…even a dog. When will people figure this out…
