Lars Ullrich, the drummer from Metallica, has hinted that they're thinking of pulling a Radiohead and giving away their material online for free!
The Metallica drummer told Rolling Stone magazine, "We're looking at how we can embrace everything. We want to be as free players as possible. We've been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails) and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the internet."
This is a shocking move, truly, cuz Metallica famously sued Napster in 2002 and Ullrich has traditionally been opposed to free distribution of their work.
It's a new world order in music. Gotta adapt to an always changing new set of rules to survive!
We're sure the Napster people are having a good chuckle today!

They sent me a 'cease and desist' letter when i was in middle school. If it weren't for Napster, I would NEVER had discovered their music. I became a fan, and then bought albums and posters.

I briefly watched a documentary movie about the making of one of their albums. Lars's voice is so fricken annoying I don't see how the hell the rest of the band could handle listening to him. If I was James I would be driven to drink too if I had to be around obnoxious Lars. I wouldn't even make it to 4:00 o'clock, I'd go throw myself off the Golden Gate Bridge. Or better yet, throw Lars off.

what pisses people so much is that lars was actually right!–>the music industry is dead…and it now seems natural for people to download without supporting the artists…Sure there's one or two bands that have succeeded thanks to myspace or youtube but not many, and success in this case means "exposure" and not necessarily selling many albums…

I got banned from Napster and I have never liked Metallica.
I would never listen to them on purpose. I was really upset at the time. Especially when I looked through my song list and there was a rap mix that someone had done and it included the words Metallica but was in fact a rap rexix and didn`t include anything to do with Metallica. Napster was full of mixes and songs joined together and loops ect people making their own stuff. Was great for that. I have and still do download music I also buy music. Good stuff. Most people who download music buy it too. Saves having lots of crap Stuff like in the 80`s when you bought a full LP because the single was good.
Metallica are greedy ho`s and whenever the come on the music channel I always flip the channel and tell quote their greed….

the napster issue was not about money it was about control …they sold more than 100 millions albums, so earning more dollars was never an issue…

Maybe somebody finally made them understand that it's been a long, gradual downhill slide for Metallica since Enter Sandman, their only true fabulous classic. And the Napster debacle makes them look like a bunch of questionable-talent greedy grinchy crabasses. Put them together, and you got sweet nothing- a publicity stunt was definitely in order.

Actually, Metallica has never been against free distribution of their music. They've had free downloads of shows on their websites for years and have always, since they started, allowed fans to record their concerts and share. They just didn't want people stealing and making a profit off of their albums, which they were told was happening. Looking back, it wasn't an awful thing to do. Do some frickin' reserach before you make posts.
