What If…

Filed under: Barack Obama > Hillary Clinton

wenn-hill-barack__opt.jpg

Being in D.C. and at the White House Correspondent's Dinner has got us thinking….

Florida and Michigan NEED to be counted in the Democratic presidential nominee selection process!

There HAS to be a revote in each state!

So, the question is: who will fund it?????

Well….

What if Bill Gates fronted the money, which would cost way less than $50 million for both states????

And, if not Bill Gates, then Ron Burkle or some other billionaire???

Somebody needs to STEP UP TO THE PLATE for democracy and make sure that the voters in Florida and Michigan are heard!!!

The voters should not have to pay the price for the mistakes their state party leaders made!!!!!!!!

Why? There were rules set by the DNC and their states decided not to follow them. Tough shit, their votes shouldn't count because they want to change the rules in the middle of the game.

So what if Hillary wins does that mean when Chelsey runs next she can claim 12 years experience in the white house. Hillary Clinton is shady corrupt and power hungry dike in a pant suit. When Florida chose to move up their election they agreed as did the candidates their votes would not count toward delegates so just deal with it. Sore losers!! Go Barack Obama

  10. Hillary would be singing a different tune if she were already winning says – reply to this

    10

NO! Stoop trying to change the rules to fit your desired outcome. They agreed beforehand that those votes would not be counted and that's it and that's that. I hate sore fucking losers and those who try to change the rules of the game in the middle of it cause they are losing. What kind of example does that set as the POTUS? Fuck that shit.

perez you're a fucking idiot don't talk about politics EVER. you dont understand this situation at all and your endorsement of hilary makes your opinion completely biased an therefore unworthy of the attention you will undoubtedly receive for it, as you do for everything you write. the democrats all made a decision to PUNISH florida and michigan. just because it is a close race does not mean that the democrats need to go back on their word. this logic is completely irrational. and furthermore, why the fuck should bill gates be the one to fund this? why does he care? the bill and melinda gates foundation was created to aid real causes and make the world a better place, not to add to an already ridiculously convoluted 'democratic' process and a drawn-out primary season which is tearing the democratic party apart.

It already happened - people offered to pay for it out of pocket. I know Carville was one, I don't remember who the other was. Anyway, the DNC turned the offer down from what I understand. Apparently Obama fans think he can get by without Florida and Michigan in the general election, because those voters know who wants them counted and who doesn't, and if the Obama people have their way, say goodbye to FL and MI and the next 8 years. More repubs in the whitehouse…sigh.

  19. bitch says – reply to this

    19

    Perez:

Hillary supporters such as James Carville and many others (backing her) have been saying FOR MONTHS that they themselves will pay for Florida and Michigan. But Obama is AGAINST it. And even if Obama gets the nomination…the chances of him getting elected are slimmer without FL and Mi. So he's kicking himself in the ass by saying to leave it alone. She's doing it the smart way to try to protect the DEMOCRATIC PARTY. and Obama is thinking for himself. He wants those pledged delegates and thats it. And the rules were set by a Republican Congress and then had to be set forth a particular way by the DNC. Thank you Republicans.

Bill Gates has enough power in the United States…and when he wants a law or motion brought up..he already gets first dibs. I wouldnt give him any more power. POLITICIANS ALREADY COMPLAIN ABOUT HIM. read up on him before looking only at his money and thinking its the quickest and easiest option. Hillary supporters have already offered to pay for it.

It's is utterly WRONG for 2 states worth of people not to be heard. I know there is a grassroots discussion going on in MI that people are going to en mass refuse to pay fed. tax unless we are counted.

    33

well, perez, its time you shut the fuck up and face the facts that hillary is not getting this nomination, no matter how hard her compaign tries to steal it from obama. the delegates are going to be seated at the convention, howard dean has said that he's going to make sure of it, but they're going to split them down the middle, as they should, thus not giving either candidate an advantage. the people who voted that day KNEW what they were doing was wrong and they have to pay the price. i mean, it was no secret what the reprecussions would be for moving the primaries ahead, but michigan and florida felt like they were above the DNC and did it anyway. well, they have to pay the price and that includes not being able to throw their weight behind either candidate. oh, and by the way, obama's name wasn't even on the michigan ballot.

Enough money has been devoted to intra-party squabbling. It is tearing the democratic party apart at a time when the democrats have the potential to (1) solidify a majority in congress and (2) win the presidency. Should more money be spent, it should be concentrated on countering republicans, not a primary contest which is becoming increasingly nasty.
    s
Bill and Melinda Gates, and others endowed with immense sums of money should spend their money on real causes, such as fighting HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, closing the gender gap in poverty, investing in water resource development and supplying food to those affected by the global rise in food prices due to increased allocation of agricultural space to biofuel crop production.

A presidential race is indeed important, but this is just getting fucking ridiculous. These two candidtates should not be encouraged to continue. This is why the democrats keep losing: party leadership can never get their shit together!

I totally disagree with Perez and agree with many of the responses posted here. The DNC set the rules - Florida and Michigan went outside of the rules and must now deal with the consequences. Being someone who is from Michigan it is unfortunate that my family and friends will not have their votes counted but they understand and if anything are upset at the MI politicians who went outside of regulations. I think that it would not only be wrong but also completely disrespectful to all of the other states that stayed the course and held their primaries accordingly. Furthermore, to suggest that Bill Gates - who uses his money to donate to HIV/AIDS projects - should pony up the cash to host another primary is ridiculous. Its a primary not a general election - so lets keep this in perspective. To allocate funds for another primary - when nearly a US$500,000 million has already been spent - would be a smack in the face to other states and a big waste of money. How about using such funds instead to go to some of the serious issues that people in Michigan and Florida are dealing with such as deteriorating schools and communities.

  42. Me says – reply to this

    42

It is a shame that our votes in Florida won't count. I agree that taxpayers should not be responsible for any mistake. Sometimes, it feels as though Florida is such an uninformed and irresponsible state. It makes me, a Floridian, ashamed to be a part of such a corrupt state.

We spend so much money on meaningless expenditures, but, as I graduate from college with a teaching degree next week, the budget for education has depleted. Teachers are losing jobs, and the job market (unfortunately, it's still a business) has gone down the gutter for aspiring teachers like myself. It's sad… I hate it… What's a girl to do? The only thing I can do is move to another state… :( Florida's beautiful, but the government is definitely not.

Unfortunately it would be completely unfair to count them. It may not be fair to the voters, but it would be a more drastic unfairness if we allowed it after the rules were knowingly broke by the states. NO VOTES… rules were broken, done. Many states didn't get all their votes in (like Texas) because of how messed up the polls were - they won't get a new vote either. Sorry but you can't do a recount or this entire election would be a huge joke.

That's not how the system works, Perez. I'm in FL, and I voted dem, and I don't think our votes should be counted. FL already appealed to have their votes counted, and they changed their dates anyway after a rejection. FL knew what they were getting into.

  49. Perez doesn't understand democracy says – reply to this

    49

Perez, you obviously don't understand democracy because you keep calling for a revote.

"The voters should not have to pay the price for the mistakes their state party leaders made!"

That's EXACTLY what democracy is. You elect people that you think can represent what you want. If those people screwed up, you screwed up because you voted for them, that's how democracy works. Saying that they shouldn't have to pay for the mistakes the leaders they elected made is just stupid and shows a lot of ignorance for the system this country is run under.

When a citizen of the US votes for their representative they are giving that rep. the right to make decisions for them as a community. When, the reps of Florida and Michigan denied to follow rules, they let those voters down.

The solution is not to recount the votes but to vote these reps out of office in the next election. The voters must take it upon themselves to ensure that their leaders do not let them down by voting these leaders out.

Why should someone have to pay just because Michigan and Florida thought all the rules didn't apply to them? If they can't follow the rules, then they're too damn stupid to be allowed to vote!!
Doesn't anyone remember that hanging chad fiasco?? And look what happened when they ended up giving the election to bush? Shit!

Screw Florida and Michigan. Let it be a lesson learned for next election. Follow the damn rules, like everyone else. Not so funny now, huh? Moving up the primary date. Idiots!

    71

You can add them both to the delegate totals and Hilary falls short.

She's now running a campaign like Huckabee so she can remain on the public stage that bit longer.

It's over, Obama's oing to overtake her superdelegate lead and that'll be that.

He's won the popular vote total, he's won the delegate total (both super and pledged) he's won more states and he decimates McCain.

Thanks to Hillary, however, for keeping the Dems in the news but comparing Obama to Hamas (last Penn debate) does not help the cause.

I find it incredible that in what is pitched as the worlds largest democrasy, would disregard millions of votes. Most europeand countries, everyones vote counts. You dont have to sign up to vote. You just have to be a citizen.
To each his own I suppose.

Right, smartie. What this country needs right now is a Microsoft branded election.

Don't go the way of Babs, Angelina or Charleton Heston. What saddens me more than the idea of some votes not being counted in a primary is the idea that people who pretend for a living or someone who writes about how many trips to the bathroom Lindsey Lohan takes in a night think that because they have some readership or some following that they are suddenly qualified for political analysis or to use their "influence" to alter the process mid-stream. Idiots.

You're a gossip blogger. You might want to consider leaving the political analysis to people who actually know what they're talking about.

    wtf???
ok they broke the rules, they knew if they held it early they wouldn't be counted and they did it anyway. the only reason you say that is because you want hilary to win, if she was in the lead right now you know you wouldn't give two flying fucks about florida and michigan.
and why are you supporting a candidate like hilary who isn't gay friendly?????
tough cookies, they broke the rules they pay the price. suck it bitch.

hilary is a sore loser who wants to change the rules whenever she can to turn it in her favor. how about we just count the popular vote, then its how about the superdels vote how they want, then how about the superdels vote how their state votes.
she is shady corrupt and a lier, she is running a dirty campaign and trying to dirty up obama so if he gets the nomination he will lose and she can run in 2012 before shes too old. shes ruining our party and her and bill could give two flying fucks.
    FUCK HILARY!!!!!

One question: How can we count Michigan, when Obama wasn't even on the ticket???? He followed the DNC rules, which Hillary did not. It wasn't a fair election on many levels.

  79. Megan says – reply to this

    79

AMEN Perez! I'm in Michigan and I'm SOOOO pissed about this, I want HILLARY to win & I voted for her in the primary & I just can't believe in this country that this is happening - MY VOTE IS NOT BEING COUNTED! GRRR!

  80. Jay says – reply to this

    80

I live in Florida - I voted - it should count. But it can't be paid for by a private citizen, there would be too many pitfalls to that. Obama has been anointed and does not want our votes to count because they were for Hillary - he WAS on the ballot in Florida and we had a tremendous turnout and he LOST. So citizens of Florida get screwed once again in the electoral process. The voters are suffering because of a pissing contest in the DNC. It's just plain b-s

  81. Kate says – reply to this

    81

I believe that re-votes should take place, but I don't believe that any one person (esp. if that person has a well-publicized political bias such as Carville, etc.) should be able to fund an election. One person or a small group of people funding an election amounts to buying an election or at least has that implication.

It sounds like an easy solution, but what you are talking about here is a person donating money for the specific purpose of people casting votes. How would you like it if in the Fall all the equipment used and the people counting the ballots were paid by one candidate? See, it just doesn't work because the money would have a direct impact on the votes.

Also, where were the people shouting about the voters of MI and FL BEFORE they had their primaries??? Then this wouldn't even be an issue. I can guarantee you that they were just as "disenfranchised" then as they are now, so why weren't the DNC and Hillary trying to clear this mess up then?

  85. Obama Supporter says – reply to this

    85

Yes, I am an Obama Supporter, and so that makes my opinion a bit biased, but I would just like to point out that Hillary is not really concerned about the voters of MI and FL. She wants to win (duh, that's why she ran), and right now there are only a few ways for her to do that.

Personally, I think it looks bad that she only complained about FL and MI AFTER the math became impossible for her to win. Notice that it wasn't right after the contests took place. Also, she can't say in one way that she thinks that voters shouldn't be disenfranchised because they were in FL and MI and then in the next breath say that she believes that because superdelegates "are long time elected officials and long time party activists" they can exercise "independent judgment." So, it's ok that my vote doesn't count in my state that DID NOTHING WRONG just because she thinks that she should win? This I believe is a lose-lose argument, but then again I'm biased.

    Um,
Why would Bill Gates, a Republican, help out the idiots in the Democratic party who can't even run a primary election, never less a country. Put the Dems in charge of Congress and what do we have a few months later….Recession!!!!! Good Job Dems.

  87. PhillyVu says – reply to this

    87

It's not the money. It's the fact that if they do this, it needs to be done by June 6 (last primary) and everything has to be completely legal. There cannot be a smidgen of doubt on the votes. That's the main reason FL & MI have not had their re-elections.

MI already voted against a couple of options for a re-election, mainly because both options were not fully safe. FL got wild on their ideas; mail in ballot?

For the record, even if you count MI & FL, Hillary still could not win by the end of the primaries.

  88. Sick Of This says – reply to this

    88

First of all, I live in Florida and everybody that wanted to had a chance to be heard. The polls were open, you could cast a vote for Clinton or Obama (unlike MI). If you were too lazy to go to the polls because "it wouldn't count" that's your problem; you should have voted anyway because you never know what will happen.

As far as Florida leaders moving the primary, I completely support that. Year after year, Floridians have lost their opportunity to choose from a full slate of candidates. Why? Because people drop out of the race due to projections based on the results in smaller states. It makes no sense that the beginning of these campaigns are so focused on places like Iowa and New Hampshire. Why should every farmer in Iowa get to meet face to face with every candidate while the big states are ignored?

We moved our primary to get a say earlier in the election and Hillary et al decided they didn't need us; so we were "punished". Funny…turns out they really need us after all!! Should have let us run the primary when we wanted!!

  89. Florida resident says – reply to this

    89

I'm a resident of Florida and would have voted in the democratic primaries if they had counted. Obama did NO campaigning here because he followed the party rules. If they count the votes at all, there would have to be a re-vote and right now noone is paying. There's no way I'd want to take away from the truly needy (i.e. Bill Gate's money) to make up for the idiocy of Florida Democratic leaders. Shame on them! They should personally pay! Florida and voting has a long history incompetancy!!!! (It's a well documented fact now that Gore did win Florida. We could have been sparred the Bush years if it weren't for Florida and the Supreme Court!)

Why should a private individual pay for something that thaese people new they were messing up?! When these states held their primaries early they knew fully well what the consequences would be. Florida and Michigan are the ones 'holding back democracy'… not a random individual who just happens to have a lot of money.

Perez, this was well talked about and decided against months ago. They looked at all the posibilities and said no. Now it's too late. Elections take a lot of time to organize. Where have you been? I'd like to see a revote too, but unfortunately it is just too late. It really is totally unfair to the people of Michigan and Florida.

    97

Perez, the people voted for the DNC members who made the rules. This decision was made by their representatives.
The process was put in place so each state would have a unique voice. Some states got greedy and wanted to bump up their profile. Bad move.
This is just another ploy by the Clinton campaign to make it seem like they care about the voting public.
    They don't.
    They just want the delegates.
The Clinton's have made like $100 million in the last eight years. Let them fund a new election, if it's deemed legal.
And Perez, why don't you use some of your advertising dollars start a fund?
    No more C's in office!!!!

    i agree with #2.
their voters KNEW when they were going to the polls that their votes weren't going to count when they voted during their local elections. BOTH sides made an agreement and just because it didn't work out the way hilary clinton wanted it too doesn't mean that people should go back on their word. what does it say if your future president has to change the rules in order to win? not to mention obama wasn't even on the michigan ticket.

she is just rediculous. i mean, really. come on people…THINK ABOUT IT HERE.

…not to mention wtf would bill gates be doing funding the POINTLESS, SECOND elections in random states?

i think you oughtta stick to celebrity gossip perez, not politics. i mean seriously…that's so impractical, not to mention WRONG.
