What If…

Filed under: Barack Obama > Hillary Clinton

wenn-hill-barack__opt.jpg

Being in D.C. and at the White House Correspondent's Dinner has got us thinking….

Florida and Michigan NEED to be counted in the Democratic presidential nominee selection process!

There HAS to be a revote in each state!

So, the question is: who will fund it?????

Well….

What if Bill Gates fronted the money, which would cost way less than $50 million for both states????

And, if not Bill Gates, then Ron Burkle or some other billionaire???

Somebody needs to STEP UP TO THE PLATE for democracy and make sure that the voters in Florida and Michigan are heard!!!

The voters should not have to pay the price for the mistakes their state party leaders made!!!!!!!!

The broke the rules, both candidates signed on the dotted line knowing both states wouldn't be counted and had no problem with it. Hilary is only bitching about it now cause she needs them, not because she feels their vote should count on principle. It is a done deal. Obama won this over two months ago. Her ego and arrogance are what is keeping her in it. They mess around and give it to her for some reason, half the party will vote against her and keep her from the WH either way. Even if Obama doesn't make it this time, he is young enough to come back on 2012.

perez, you are an absolute idiot. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Stop embarrassing yourself, stay out of politics and any other serious news, and stick to inane, juvenile, celebrity gossip. Dear god, please.

    103

I agree, Perez! As a law student i have learned that voting is one of the fundamental rights of being an American and it shouldn't be denied to ANY American citizen. Yes, I agree that party leaders made a mistake, but in reality, does it really matter? So the primaries were held a little early - who cares? Even if one were to argue that rules are rules, it isn't fair (and I would argue unconstitutional) to deny the citizens of two states their votes in what is turning out to be a very close election! Punish the state leaders, not the state citizens! They had NO say over when their elections were held!

Sweetie if there was to be a revote that would put Hillary ahead of the racist Obama and there are some who don't want that to happen.

true florida and michigan broke the rules established by the dnc, but @ the same time no one thought that the race b/t clinton and obama would be so close.if doing a recount in those two states helps to solidify the democratic presidential candidate then i think that the money should be put up by the dnc, florida and michigan and the obama/clinton campaign.

  8. Melissa says – reply to this

    108

I disagree and it's too late for a revote in both states. It takes considerable time and expense to set up a primary in a state and that time has come and gone. Those rules were set by the DNC over a year ago and Hillary Clinton was well aware that those rules were in place. They even have her on tape saying that those votes didn't matter anyway. (because she thought she was going to be the winner. Sense of entitlement shall we say?) The DNC is making arrangements to somehow seat the FL and MI delegates fairly but I am tired of hearing about it and just want them to pick a nominee. And, to suggest Bill Gates pay for it is just ridiculous. Obama said time and time again that if the DNC could come up with a fair way (earlier this year) to have a primary in that state he would be glad to do so (it's on tape). But, it was being driven by Clinton supporters and donors which wouldn't make it fair - says the DNC…not Obama! You know some people need to realize that if Clinton was such a winner then why has she run such a bankrupt, poor campaign and is behind in delegates, popular vote, campaign funds, number of states won, etc. I think the people have spoken…and it's for Obama. At least he has run a dignified, classy campaign and doesn't resort to lieing, deceitful, condescending behavior like the Clintons.

Re: Vivica – Well… Typical Clinton supporter. Not willing to admit CLINTON HERSELF SAID THOSE VOTES WON'T COUNT. So which version of her reality shall we use today?

  10. amy says – reply to this

    110

The rules were set…the people of MI and FL should be upset with their leaders of their states who decided not to follow the DNC rules. It's sad that the voters votes will not count but maybe next time they will get people in there who know what to do and will FOLLOW THE RULES.

It would be like playing Monopoly and knowing the rules but playing a different way from the other players. Like playing where you get money on Free Parking…not everyone plays that way…so before the game everyone decides "NO MONEY FOR FREE PARKING" but one or 2 guys decide that they are gonna get the money for free parking…well at the end of the game their money won't count cause they didn't play right. Thats life.

You know, several of the founding fathers did not really believe that we all should be able to vote. I am not sure, but I think from my history classes that there was at least one noteable quote about the "masses are asses." These two states are just a small example of what happens when uninformed people are allowed to make important decisions for a large group. Learn about the issues before you cast a vote. Vote with your head, not your heart, and quit whining when things don't always go the way you want! "Do Overs" and "Take-Backs" are for babies!!!

  12. GO HILLARY :) says – reply to this

    112

i just want to say that as a democrat i think that the dnc sucks.the republicans got it right with win and take all states. if the democrats established that type of rule as oppose to delegate distribution, we wouldn't be in this mess right now.this works out well for obama because even though he has won more states, most of them have smaller populations…just think if the democrat primaries were win and take all, hillary would be ahead b/c she has won the huge states such as california, ohio, texas, etc.

    115

FIRST….Perez, you look sooooo much better just being YOU !!!! Alot more handsome, AND more professional. You don't need all that bogus hair crap.

Second….the people of Fla and Mich VOTED for those "state party leaders" to REPRESENT them. They (gov officials elected to represent the people) CHOSE to run the primaries that way, therefore they're shit out of luck !!! They (gov officials) COULD HAVE followed the way the LAW states things SHOULD be run, but CHOSE not to !!! So sad, too bad. Why did they feel they NEEDED to hold the primaries so early ??? They KNEW the results of their actions !!!

  16. Melissa says – reply to this

  17. AJ says – reply to this

    117

NO and NO and No and NO!! The Democrats and their party ALL AGREED to do those state primaries EARLY. Now they are whining and crying and it's THEIR OWN FAULT!!! If you want the democratic process then THERE SHOULD BE NO RE-DO!! THEY were the ones who made the decision. THEY were the ones who ACCEPTED noat the delegates wouldn't be seated. It's NOT the states faults, but the Democrats fault. They made their beds, now they must lie in them!!

  18. Danni says – reply to this

    118

What about the people of Florida and Michigan that gave $$$ to those party leaders? They should either count their fucking votes or give them their $$$ back. You can't have it both ways. Sure, they won't count their vote but they'll take their fucking money!
And please tell me u all don't think there's not something fishy going on here. I mean it's Flori-duh and Michigan both of which were decisive in the last election. And both just happen to NOT count this time. riiiiiiiggghhhhhtttt!

  19. Elizabeth says – reply to this

    119

Their votes will be counted when they split the delegates. They have already discussed a re-vote in Fla. and MI and came to the conclusion that it's never going to happen. Both states violated the DNC rules.

  23. change=same?? says – reply to this

    123

Reguardless of what either campaign says, these 2 states need to be heard. How can you punish the voters for something someone in a suit did to them?? Why punish the innocent people of both states?? Sen. Obama and the DNC need to let the people be heard. I find it funny that the candidate for "change" is the first one to hide behind old rules. You can't change if you follow the same old rules. The people in these highly populated states have an opinion, they just can't tell you because they have been silenced by the DNC and the Obama campaign. Sen. Obama sounds like the same ole politicians of yesterday, bullying the people. If Obama and the DNC wants to be the candidate and party of the people, then they need to stick up for the people. Not silence them in fear of defeat. After all its about America, not just one person or one group of people. And notice its Obama and his supporters who don't want a revote. That is how Obama got tagged with the elitist pin he's been trying to shed. This is a sure way to lose Michigan and Florida in November. Shameful…

    124

    Dear Perez,

I love your column…but I also love political columns too. You should check out Talkingpointsmemo if you haven't already. They've discussed these options a lot. Basically, the time has passed for Florida to have a re-vote. It is legally (under FL law) and logistically impossible to have a revote, even if there was money. I believe they would have had to have approval for this two or three weeks ago in order to begin and complete the process. I love that you are getting involved in politics (everyone should!) even if I don't agree with your views, but you should do more research on this complex issues before advocating for them.

Talk about being used, Perez…who put you up to this? There's a few minor issues with your idea..one is this would be considered a campaign contribution AND no one person can donate that kind money, it's against the law. Secondly, let me ask you something. Is this the way Dems plan to run the country…making self-serving laws, and then when the outcome isn't what THEY expect, just go ahead and change the rules? They made this rule and now they must abide by it. Sorry.

  31. Sarah says – reply to this

    131

As a resident of Michigan, I couldn't agree more….but our votes don't just need to be counted, there needs to be a complete redo. I go to the University of Michigan and I know plenty of students, myself included, who didn't vote in our primary simply because Obama's name wasn't on the ballot. If you want to be completely fair, don't just give our state a voice by counting our primary, but give us an actual say in this election and let us vote on a ballot with two names, not one!

And as for comments saying our votes shouldn't be counted because we broke the rules, I can assure each and every one of you that only our state's government officials made that decision, no one else. Obviously we shouldn't be penalized for their decisions, thankyouverymuch!

I'm with the majority of the posters here. Sorry Perez but those votes shouldn't and will not count. This was established months before the primaries began. But now that one candidate, the one who's behind, wants them to count? It's the past, move on from this already.

  36. Obama snubbed Florigan voluntarily.. says – reply to this

    136

Why did Obama take his name off the ballot and snub these states anyway?? He hides behind the old DNC rules, this candidate for "change". Obama knew he'd likely lose here so he had his name voluntarily removed, thinking he would be safe behind these rules by default. Its more Obama's fault then the voters of these two states fault, afterall he was the one to remove his name from the ballot, not the people. If Obama is going to hide behind these rules, then this should tell you he's not about "change", this should also tell you he's not a man of the people…

  40. Obama said no more debates says – reply to this

    140

Obama and Clinton need to debate the revote in front of the nation. However Obama said he won't participate in anymore debates since his performance was so bad last time ( I thought these were good and fair questions). How are we supposed to get answers then?? Not everyone can go to a rally, and not everyone trusts the media. How are we supposed to decide if Obama won't tackle the issues at hand. We need many more debates… without mediators. FACTS PLEASE!

  41. Lauren says – reply to this

    141

Re: hey – Why didn't the Obama people fight it???? LOL! At least your asking reasonable questions, not like some of the idiots here. Obama did not fight it because there's no way he was going to win Florida and Michigan? He would have probably won Michigan so it's pretty much a wash anyway..but now it's become conventional wisdom that Obama would come out ahead anyway. Statistically speaking, there's really no way Hillary can win…the numbers aren't there. That's what is so crazy about this. The only way she can win is if she does something to convince the superdelegates to vote for her. And that's just not going to happen if Obama has received more seated delegates and the popular vote. And what's up with that? Is that democracy? Remember Animal Farm? some animals are more equal than others? Read the history of superdelegates…it will tell you more about the democrat party than anything else you'll ever read.

    144

Obama wasn't even on the ballot in MI. Hillary supporters only want those to count now that she has no chance of winning. She could have cared less at the time. But, lets be fair, if you count FL and MI popular votes for hillary then you have to count them for Obama too. That means Obama gets the 'uncommitted' votes MI. Guess what- that means the she can't, in any way, beat him in the popular vote. Perez-educate yourself before you try talking about things of such substance. You sound like a Hillary hack.

  45. Juls says – reply to this

They wanted to change everything and that's their problem… next time thier votes will count…. i'm sorry that they don't get to count now but suck it! 52. Mickeyrock says – reply to this

    152

I always loved Perez, and this site, until he endorsed Hillary Clinton. Perez should stick with what he knows, which is making fun of those who take their fame too seriously. Advice regarding politics should not be given by someone who makes their living drawing coke in people's noses.

Obama followed the rules, and DID NOT have his name on the ballot in Michigan, and did campaign in Florida. Michigan and Florida made the decision on behalf of their voters, and any blame for the inability of their votes to be counted should be directed at the party leaders in those states, not the candidates.

Who in this country would really think a fair voting process would come from a re-vote funded by the supporters of one of the candidates?

I'd like Perez to think about the fact that Hillary has yet to address the needs of the LGBT community in ANY major public forum, unlike Obama. Hillary speaks to the LGBT community only when addressing them directly.

Hillary has not been the continual front leader due to her old, tired style of politics. Bending rules and injecting the same rhetoric into the media will not win her the election in 2008. She needs to move aside, and realize that they young voters of this country are ready for a change.

    GO OBAMA!

  53. pissed off says – reply to this

    153

The problem is that Hillary is a very sore looser. Her actions, or shall I say her inability to see beyond her own personal ambition could quite possibly ensure that the Republican reign continues. Although, I think that McCain would be a better choice over Clinton and if she does somehow succeed in bullying her way into getting the nomination, I will most definitely vote McCain. Obama is a much better choice. What this country needs most of all is a genuine shift in perspective and morale. Sort of like when Bill Clinton started his fist term and very unlike the current version of the man. That is not what she is about. Nothing comes from the heart except her desire to win. Do yourself and the world a favor and vote OBAMA.

Do the math Perez and stop annoying with your love of Hilary. SHE IS LIAR AND SHE CAN BE BOUGHT BY THE LOBBYISTS IN WASHINGTON. Perez,

Someone has already stepped up to the plate. James Carville, along with NJ Governor Jon Corzine and some other loaded folks, have offered to raise the money to re-run the elections in MI and FL. However, the DNC won't agree to let them do it.

And this still has nothing to do with Michigan. The DNC coulda only taken away 1/2 the delegates as the RNC did and they wouldn't have this problem.

    165

Re: Lauren – Yes these are stupid rules, I agree with you. But why then is Obama hiding behind these old, corrupt rules ?? He also voluntarily removed his name from the ballot, the people didn't do that, Obama did. He was hoping to win by default since his name wasn't on the ballot by his choice and his doing. That is no ones fault but his. I thought he was the candidate for change, sounds like the same ole thing to me.

  66. Heather says – reply to this

    166

I think it's so stupid that our votes basically didn't matter. I live in Florida, and yes our leaders fucked up, but all these people saying oh well know they wouldn't if their votes were tossed out. Just because the states leaders fucked up doesn't mean that WE fucked up and should be thrown out. Either that or they want a McCain or Obama and are scared by the fact that Florida is counted that Hilary and Obama's split would lessen. Hell Obama is even too scared to let it happen. If not, he would have agreed to the Florida and Michigan votes be either counted or would have supported a revote.

  67. Al Sharpton To Shut Down The City Of New York, Crazy Angry Mob To Kill All Police says – reply to this

    167

Hundreds of angry people marched through Harlem on Saturday after the Rev. Al Sharpton promised to "close this city down" to protest the acquittals of three police detectives.
The rally at Sharpton's office was followed by a 20-block march down Malcolm X Boulevard and then across 125th Street, Harlem's main business thoroughfare, where some bystanders yelled out "Kill the police!"
Sharpton urged people to return for a meeting this coming week "to plan the day that we will close this city down" with the kind of "massive civil disobedience" once led by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
"Shut it down! Shut it down!" the crowd chanted, standing up and applauding wildly.

  68. OBAMA 2008 = BUSH 2000 says – reply to this

    168

Obama supporters are EXACTLY the same as Bush supporters. They don't want everyone to have a vote. Sorry, I'm never voting for a Democratic candidate when the Democratic party doesn't even let everyone vote. This is to the point of shit they would do in the Soviet Union.

  69. 2 Parties = Lame says – reply to this

    169

So it's a DEMOCRATIC primary, where the DEMOCRATS in these states have screwed the pooch, so I think the DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE should pay for it.

That's right, the DNC should actually pay to fix their own nomination system.

Not fucking bill gates, carville, or anything remotely resembling tax payer $$.

There is no right to vote, there are only two parties, and one of them (DNC) can't even get their shit together to figure out how to count their votes.

    Wake up people.

BTW, awesome outfit last night @ the Correspondent's dinner; I totally think Perez should have rocked out red hair. or at least pink.

  70. President John McCain says – reply to this

    170

If Obama's people thought he was going to win the HUGE, IMPORTANT states of Michigan and Florida, they would be marching in the streets deanding that they get to vote. They know that the people in those states, just like in Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and California don't want him. Good luck winning the election without the vast majority of the country behind you. 3 caucus members in Iowa don't get to vote for the whole state in November.

  71. cj says – reply to this

    171

No revote for Florida, all the voters and politicians knew if we voted early, our votes for president would not count. The powers to be in Florida decided to vote early anyway. So I said no to revote. If we let Florida and other states get away with this, every state will vote whenever they want with no penalties. Go Obama!

Don't he have a real job? He's calling for an Economic Boycott (of WHAT, and by WHOSE authority, I have no idea) and threatening to march on Wall Street and Police Headquarters. "Scuse my southern dialect, but What The Fuck?
This is just an appetizer for what we're gonna get weeks of, if Hussein is NOT elected, and 4 years of, if Hussein IS elected.

"That's right, Your Honor! The voters of Florida and Michigan are good kids - they just fell in with a bad crowd! Ignore the rules just for them."
Actually, the primaries are not a part of the Nation's official electoral process as most people assume. They are a method that SOME political parties use to choose their candidate for the "general election" which IS a part of the nation's official electoral process. Most parties don't have primaries at all (for example the Libertarians) and it is not necessary in order to get a candidate on the ballot. If the Democratic Party wants to choose its candidate by drawing straws it has the right to do so. If you don't like their methods you can work to change the rules or leave the party. But if you are going to be a party member you should respect the rules of the party. Seems logical to me.

They all agreed that their Presence would be the Kiss Of Death to Hussein's campaign. But they just couldn't stay outta the damn limelight.
Which actually is good. They need to come on out now and give us a preview of what's commin'. God knows they will be burrowing outta the woodwork and slithering up from the sewers on the day after Obama's elected. We'll all be up to our ears in Wrights, Sharptons, Farakhans, and Jacksons.

There is no arguement left for the votes lost and one is just flogging a dead horse by making any claims that there will be any change. Besides once a winner is declared both candidates will be forced by party alligence to be best of friends and dedicate full and total support to the winner. We will be inundated with promotional ads for which ever Democrat wins until the election ends and of course the usual negative ads about the Republican running. Nothing new and as nauseatingly predictable as any TV show.

The facts and the details don't matter. When THE MAN (THis mythological White Man the coloreds hate so much) does not agree to cater to the colored quagmire, in their perception, they take on the victim role of a people who've been wronged for 400 years. And Al Sharpton has a personal jet named " FAN THE FLAMES " that carries him all over to work the Crazy mojo and stir up shit. Times 10 to the 100th power.

If you believe the polls, which I don't, it shows Clinton ahead of McCain after the terrible showing with the ABC debate on Obama's part.I will tell you this, a McCain/ Huckabee ticket would be very hard to beat. I like Mike Huckabee alot and I am a demacrat. I would be willing to cross party lines if McCain has Huckabee for his running mate. Reguardless though, Michigan and Florida should have a say when electing a nominee. See how bad this makes the DNC look…people are so divided now that either Democratic nominee would have trouble reaching out to the other candidates supporters, they would either vote McCain or stay home..I just have complaints about politicians trying to hush voters.. No one should ever be allowed to take that away…By the way , its nice to have a chat with someone who respects others opinions without the name calling, thanks.

This posistion is great and all. However, you would have to let both candidates campagin in each state again. Barack Obama didn't really even campaign in either of those states. And there are rules that each state needed to abide by and they failed. I wish one of them would have dropped out long ago. The Democratic Party is being split apart. When one of them goes head to head with McCain, I think we, the Democrats, might lose.

  99. Lisa says – reply to this

    199

Just because you go to Washington doesn't make you a political expert.

The people of Florida voted on those leaders, the leaders screwed up, and the people's votes should NOT be counted because that was the agreed on rules prior to entering the election season. They should elect new, better leaders when the time comes who won't screw over their constituents in the future because that is what the elected leaders in those states did. That is how the process works. Sorry.

The Democrats are screwing themselves because both candidates care too much about their own agendas and give little regard for the party at large. That indicates the leaders they'd be. Think about it.

Florida and Michigan.. Obama and his supporters don't want you to be heard!! Obama's campaign is hiding behind old rules that punish voters. This isn't "change" its "same", is this what we got to look forward to IF Obama was to ever win the Presidentcy?? He will silence his critics and hide behind corrupt distasteful rules. Change my butt!! Once again Obama brings to light the elitist tag which he has been given by disallowing a certain group of people to voice their opinions and beliefs… Obama also needs to debate and stop being such a chicken sh*t. Americans have the right to question all who are running for the top job. FACTS PLEASE!
