Give to your local shelter, but dont' give a dime to HSUS. They're an animal rights group like PETA. They don't run shelters and they don't take in animals. The money just goes to raise more money.

Yeah, he DIDNT get his dog from a shelter… but everyone evolves, everyone learns… Look at Oprah, she admitted that her future dogs will be RESCUE dogs… I imagine that perez will say the same… one day….

Unless you buy your dog from a legitimate breeder who is seriously interested in promoting the healthy future of a recognized breed or you adopt from a shelter or rescue, you are doing it wrong. 'Designer Dogs' are nothing more than the adorable result of greedy backyard breeders who want to make a quick buck off of the same kind of dog you can adopt at the shelter. Shelters are overrun with dogs with genetic diseases because of backyard breeders.

ITS ALWAYS BETTER TO GET PUPPIES FROM A SHELTER, but if you MUST
    A REPUTABLE BREEDER WILL
    1. Have only 1 or 2 breeds of dogs available
    2. Not breed for profit, in fact, they would be lucky to break even
    3. Probably have a waiting list
    4. Ask you a lot of questions, such as where you live, if you have children, other pets etc.
    5. Provide you with a pedigree for both the puppy’s parents
    6. Show you your puppy’s parents while the puppies are still nursing
    7. Guarantee the puppy’s health
    8. Not place a puppy in a new home before 8 weeks of age
    9. Often keep at least one puppy for their own breeding/showing program
    10. Take back the puppy at any time, in fact they will ask that you return the dog if for any reason you cannot keep it
    11. Be responsible for every puppy they bring into this world, for its entire life
    12. Offer you continuing support and training advice throughout the puppy’s life
    13. Insist that buyers of pet puppies spay/neuter their puppy, and have some method of enforcement
    14. Do not sell their dogs by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Paypal) and “fly” or “deliver” the dog to you
    15. Do not sell their dogs without meeting you in person at their home, so you can see where the dogs are living
I found this info on www.petmates.ca. Forums: www.pawtalk.ca.

I find this very ironic. Even if Teddy wasn't a puppy mill dog, backyard "breeders" who're producing animals just to turn a profit (as do "designer dog" breeders, like Teddy's) are a BIGGER contributing force to homeless animals. For shame, Perez. I hope you've learned your next dog should be ADOPTED or purchased from a REPUTABLE breeder.

    112

Although puppy mills are terrible, Americans should be skepitcal of HSUS. Despite their several million dollar budget (financed by donations) they do not own or operate a single shelter or adoption program. They are comperable to PETA and could be classified at an "ecoterrorist" organization as they have been linked to vandels and arsonists. Be careful…. Do not support these people. Read some of the ideas the president of HSUS has published about how cows and bugs should be treated equally to humans. Good stuff right there…

  13. anna says – reply to this

    113

um… HSUS is a a bunch of a**holes. They took money for 'helping Vick's dogs' even though they never had *ANYTHING* to do with them. They also work with PETA to have one of the highest euthanasia rates at their shelter (something in the 98% range, failing 8 week old puppies for having 'bad tempermants' ).

PEREZ, don't support HSUS or PETA! Support your local shelter, volunteer, take a homeless pup for a walk but DON"T give any more money to the HSUS.

Most pet stores dogs comes from Puppy Mills where dogs and puppies suffer tremendously, whereas there are literally thousands of puppies and dogs that need homes and you can get a awesome pet from animal shelters. The Humane Society of America does saves animals, and is in no way against pet ownership, they are against Puppy Mills which are places of 'hell' for the animals, they are against animal suffering, and fully support adoptions from animal shelters.

    118

perez please say it ain't so you got your dog from other than humane society or rescue. i guess you are just a fake ,telling everyone else how bad puppy mills are,and you do the opposite.please people do not buy from those cruel puppy mills. they only care about making blood money at the risk of these poor puppies. contact p.e.t.a.org. for the real truth about our animal friends and their endless suffering.

I feel the issue of puppy mills will be blown sky high now that Oprah Winfrey is sharing the stage with The Humane Society of the U.S. and Bill Smith of Main Line Animal Rescue. If I know anything about Oprah, she gets to the bottom of things and doesn't let go. I signed the pledge at The HSUS to only buy from a reputable breeder where I have met my dog's mother, from a rescue organization or specific dog breed group. If anyone else wants to sign just go to: humanesociety.org/stoppuppymills

There are days I cannot stop thinking of the eyes of the breeding mothers while they fester in those filthy hell holes year after year. Never get out to play. Never get any love.

I helped with the rescue of 350 dogs from a puppy mill here in Dallas, TX. I watched their eyes as we cleaned them and talked to them for probably the first time in their lives. They were just so quiet and were taking it all in. Some of the dogs had lived two to three in a tight cage for more than 8 years. Some of the dogs were blind as they had been tethered to dog houses with no roofs for years. Most had no teeth and their eyes were glassy and bulging out from lack of nutrition.

I heard just recently that the Governor of PA is working on legislation addressing this issue. Thank God for The HSUS, Bill Smith, Oprah and everyone else who is getting the message out loud and clear that once America knows the facts, this cruelty to animals will NOT be tolerated!!!

Always check your local animal shelters first before going to any pet stores, or looking online. There are millions of loving, great pets just waiting to be adopted, many sadly meet an end before they ever should! Stop the over-breeding and abuse! Adopt from your local humane society shelter, or any local animal shelter! You can make a difference!

    Re: anna

    Hi Anna,

Please check the facts before posting negative commentary about the HSUS. The HSUS is one of the strongest forces behind dog fighting investigations. There are also a lot of organizations affiliated with PETA and they are far from being a$$holes. Don't judge. You'd probably be a happier person.

get real if you think donating money to this "worthwhile" cause is going to stop this business. as long as people are allowed to buy dogs, there will be people breeding them.

if you people get these breeders to stop selling these puppies, where am i going to get my puppy-burger for grilling out?

    Re: heather

Wow! You are very uneducated about The HSUS Ms. Heather. The HSUS is and ABOVE GROUND animal PROTECTION group that has NEVER NOR WILL EVER break ANY LAWS!!! They work within our Government to create laws to protect animals. THEY ARE IN NO WAY AFFILIATED WITH THE ALF OR ANY UNDERGROUND ORGANIZATIONS.

Puppy mills are nothing new. These mass dog-breeding operations have been around for decades. They continue to thrive because they prey on unwitting consumers who are smitten by too-cute-for-words puppies in pet store windows and on fancy websites.

But behind the friendly facade of the local pet shop, the pastoral scenes on a "breeder's" website, or the neighborhood newspaper ad, there often lies a puppy mill. These canine breeding facilities house dogs in shockingly poor conditions.

Life is particularly bad for "breeding stock," dogs who live their entire lives in cages and are continually bred for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever becoming part of a family. These dogs receive little or no veterinary care and never see a bed, a treat or a toy. After their fertility wanes, breeding animals are commonly killed, abandoned or sold to another mill. The annual result of all this breeding is hundreds of thousands of puppies, many with behavior and/or health problems.

I'm going to have to defend Perez here. I keep seeing all of this finger pointing and I must say that most people who live busy lives don't know about this issue. Please give him a chance! Looks to me like he's trying to right a wrong here. The issue, while being fought for a while now, hasn't had the attention drawn to it to this degree EVER, so we all need to chill and let time take its course.

I'm a supporter of the HSUS and Puppy Mills are a major concern in this country. First of all what happens alot of times is that people go into these pet stores that sell puppies and they fall in love not even thinking about what that puppy has been through or where it comes from. Sure you can ask the owner if it comes from a Puppy Mill but they will lie. Puppies that come from these mills live in horrible conditions, are treated poorly, and are used just for repeated breading. We have to stand up for the animals. You can help by signing the stop puppy mills pledge at humanesociety.org/stoppuppymills
By pledging not to buy from pet stores, you are helping break the demand cycle for mass-breeding pets. Also please be aware the HSUS is not and has never been against pet ownership. Even though HSUS doesn't run your local shelter they provide resources and financial assistance to animal shelters around the country.

I have been getting my Rottys from a Rescue for years now–It is so rewarding. They seem to know that you saved their life.If people stopped buying from puppy mills-they would have to go out of business. There are lots of purebred dogs at shelters and rescue organizations–but I dont believe that is important at all-but to the people that it is important to–you might not get papers–but YOU WILL BE SAVING A PRECIOUS, DESERVING LIFE. My rescue makes sure that the dogs and cats are up to date on vaccines and are spayed or neutered. Do yourself and them a favor–please think seriously about getting a rescue or shelter dog. I have NEVER regretted my choice. Thanks for keeping this topic in the open and not hidden like the puppy mill breeders want their dirty little secrets kept.

Thanks Pamela, for bringing Puppy Mills to the public. It is so nice to see you fighting so passionately for them. Now, if you could be so kind as to focus on your marriage, you know, the one where you are married to a wealthy guy but you've been having affairs the last two decades in search of 'your soul mate'. Please quit cheating, and lying to your husband. Being a graduate of Oral Roberts University, and quoting Bible versus on your homepage…kinda hypocritical, correct? PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH. If you feel so passionately about animals, maybe you could redirect some of that energy into being kind, and decent to your cuckholded husband.

Re: Marty – How we treat animals is a direct reflection of the kind of human beings we are. It reflects our level of capable compassion. When we teach others to see the error of their ways… for example, that keeping a dog in a cage and forcing it to have litter after litter of puppies with no love or affection, no freedom whatsoever, and no care for the physical suffering of that dog, is cruel and hateful… we are helping them to be better human beings. In that way, the HSUS and all who support it ARE helping fellow human beings. No, animals are not as important as people… but that doesn't mean they don't deserve to have someone speak up to end their suffering.
