Monday night's episode of Gossip Girl scored a 1.9/3 Nielsen rating.
Translation: it sucked ass!
The show finished 5th place in its time slot (a pathetic finish to most industry experts).
What's going on?????

Because the show is just all around terrible. Who really want to watch a show centered around spoiled kids in a spoiled world? Get real.

I love the show and I have been watching, but I think monday is too early in the week for the show, especially at 7:00. Last week I missed it and watched it on TiVo and this week I almost missed it again cuz I just wasn't ready for it.

That's easy. We use to be able to stream video online. Now that they don't stream video, people have found something else to watch.
You start a show based mostly on Internet and texting aiming at an Internet and texting generation, and then free stream video and then take that all away: what do you get? Annoyed former viewers like me.
well honestly I have never watched gossip girl it really doesnt interest me..i mean yeah i like watching drama, sex and all the bull..but it gets old after a while if its the same thing..i mean if shows want to do good and want to do stuff about drama sex and all that they should like change it up alot..not the same thing…you get me??
ps, they also packed WAY too much info into the last episode… and it's so obvious that s's little bro is going to come out of the closet. hello, gay face! (i say this with nothing but respect.)

NY mag had an article about the show recently…despite having a low viewership rate, the show it self has a massive internet following. Many people watch it on CW.tv (until recently when the online episodes were discontinued). They also quickly end up on websites like youtube with links to other websites to watch the full episodes comerical free. I personally end up buying them from itunes, where they usually have the number 1-3 slot for most downloads of the day.
I'm a really busy college student so I don't always have time to watch shows during primetime. It's wierd because I have an obsession with girly shows like Sex and the City but I'm not interested in this show for some reason and haven't been from the beginning. I also think from the hair to the clothes the show is trying too hard to be a rip-off of Sex and the City.

the kids who are watching are downloading it on itunes and watching it on the web. the show is amongst the most downloaded on itunes. maybe they should limit the web availability to boost tv ratings. the technologically advanced youth don't just watch tv they web it.

It's probably because no one knows when it's supposed to be on. They show it 3-4 times a week where I am and even then it's not always the current episode.

They need to get GG back online…by only having the show on the CW they are totally limiting its distribution.
I usually watch online then pick it up at home…
because one it is competing against Greek on abc family, two it threw in these new plot lines after its hiatus which just made our head spin. Should had stuck out with the situations it already had an brought in those new scenarios later. Its become annoying with its problems.
It doesn't really follow the books. I watched two episodes, and I didn't like it for that reason. I'm not saying there can't be artistic liberties, but this show completely changes some of the characters. Dan and Serena are nothing like the book. Serena may be not as shallow as Blair, but she is still suppose to be very flighty. The core of Dan's character is that he doesn't fit in because he is really weird and obsessive. I appreciate the show giving me something good to look at in the casting of Dan, but class issues and money were not what set him apart from his peers. It was the fact that he was very very strange. The series just wasn't brave enough to have only one attractive guy (Nate), and it wasn't brave enough to have heriones that are more flawed (Serena). The creators made Serena more down to earth so she would be likable and a girl to root for. The series would get watched more if they stuck with the characters that made the books so popular.

i'm thinking the cw as the network. i like the show but there never seems to be much on that station, so I forget to check it. b/c other than that it's not a bad show. alsooo who is it supposed to appeal to? high schoolers? or older?
It's because the damn network didn't do enough to let fans know that the show had switched timeslots to Monday nights..that's the reason half of my friends didn't know to watch it. If I didn't obsess over my shows so much, I pry wouldn't have known it had moved nights either.

I don't think this show can translate as well across the US. These boys are so feminine looking and don't look anything like the boys I went to high school with in ohio. I just think its harder to connect.

It is trying to compete with too many well established programs in the Monday night time slot, it should return to Wednesdays, also with a show that has grown from a young teen following with the books, using sex as its only selling point alienates that fan base as well as encourages parents to censor their teens' watching habits
they NEED to put the full episodes back on-line, and start counting those views in the ratings. I have class when the show airs, so I can't watch it anymore!
I absolutely LOVE Gossip Girl… so I am not happy about this news. Anyway, I believe that maybe the reason it hasn't been doing as well is because the cast isn't featured enough in magazines or doing interviews here and there… you know… the regular PR stuff. Maybe they need to start doing that a little more. I love everyone in the cast. They are all very talented… so, one question. Why does that show that Lauren Conrad does, oh, THE HILLS, get so much more attention for shit acting? I'm sorry, I meant shit reality acting. WHY???????? STAY GOSSIP GIRL! We need you!

Wow, those ratings do suck. I thought the episode was fantastic. It does huge numbers on downloads from Itunes and people with tivo it and watch it later. This could be the nail in the coffin.
I also don't like the show because I have read the entire book series and it really has nothing to do with the show which makes it completely irrelevant to me, and I love pretty much ALL the shows for young adults that are on tv right now. I just can't get into Gossip Girl, although if they went closer to the book's storylines, I would watch it. =]
I would NEVER allow my 16 year old to watch it, and most parents I know won't either. It's soft teen porn.
The show costs a fortune for executives to produce and their projections were way too high. These are not super rich kids that just happen to have nice clothes, each and every outfit and accessory has to be purchased and only used ONCE. God forbid they wear the same thing twice! The horror!! Whereas the Hills has much higher ratings b/c 1.) It's Hollywood, so much more interesting than NYC 2.) these trendy girls own their own clothes, BMW's, and basically just have to be followed, not directed (depending on who you talk to).
So, anyone else hoping Heidi & Spencer get kicked off The Hills for their obnoxious slandering they continue to do of the rest of the cast??

The fact that the show is on the CW, had a strike interupt the middle of it's first season, and then the channel moved it from Wednesday to Monday has caused it all kind of problems. Moving a show to a different day, especially in its first season, is always bad for the show's ratings, usually.
well, i love this show, but i live in canada and all the adds show it on the CW, which we dont' get where i live. it's usually on ctv on tuesday's, or it was when it was on before the strike, but there has been no mention of when it is playing here now that it's back!!!!! fcking sucks, that's why no one up here in the north is watching, we dunno when it's on/where it's on?!?!!?

Because there are so many other great shows on Monday nights on the basic cable channels that are usually all right next to each other…NBC ABC etc. It needs to come on on Friday or Saturday nights when there is nothing else on! And maybe moved to a different channel.

I personally think that since its on a monday some people forget about it. its at an odd time, 7 oclock and I know that in my opinoun im usually busy doing other things that that time and then im like crap,gossip girl is on. Maybe they should move the day,time, but i also think that they should broadcast the comercial for the upcoming episode more. i barely see it on any tv channels.
Don't have time to watch it between work and college. I must watch it online instead. In fact I watch all of my shows online.

my friend is an extra on the show so i watch it just to see him. everytime i watch it is truely an hour of my life ill never get back. worste story lines ever.
UMM MAYBE BECAUSE IT'S NOTHING LIKE THE BOOK? WHY ISN'T VANESSA BALD? WHY DOESN'T JENNY HAVE CURLY HAIR OR BIG BOOBS? I watched the first few episodes and was extremely disappointed. Gossipgirl is fucking up.
The reason shows like this blow is because people are starting to get sick of these types of shows. Nobody can really relate to a show like this, especially with all the lame promo's they were showing. If I were them, I'd just write ridiculously never before seen material that will make the show go out with a bang. In the future, regular people are what make people watch. Overly done up people who pose as they eat don't relate to me.

Because it's on the CW. If it was on like Abc on an earlier tim slot and on wensday or tuesday night it would be different.
i watched the show everytime it airs even repeats but i think its the time slot b/c me and my man fight over the tv for 8:00 on mondays i think it was better on wednesday and the writers strike messed the whole shiz up if it was going on back to back like before everyone would be hooked ..

Up in canada there's no advertising when it's on! I had no idea it started up again after the strike…there's no promotion at all. it's such a good show too - sad but it will be cancelled because there's no promo telling us when its on!

First of all its on CW so its not going to do as well as it would if it were on a more basic channel like NBC or ABC
And its difficult for them to have a target audience because the senario involves teenagers but it has adult content so parents might not let their kids watch the show
I think they just need to do more promotions and allow us to get a chance to know the actors who play the roles

I think it was off for so long that everyone has kind of forgot what's going on. When you watch it every week the drama keeps its momentum but when it went off for the strike people just kind of lose intrest. Plus, college kids are done school now and are back at home where we have jobs and better things to do. Also, Degrassi was on!! lol
