For a show with so much buzz, practically no one is watching!
Monday night's episode of Gossip Girl scored a 1.9/3 Nielsen rating.
Translation: it sucked ass!
The show finished 5th place in its time slot (a pathetic finish to most industry experts).
What's going on?????

Re: Alana – Yeah, I agree. I really enjoyed the books, mostly because you could tell the author was snickering at the stupidity of her characters. It was deliciously ironic. The show took the soul out of the books, Hollywoodized all the characters (particuarly Vanessa), and completely changed around the storyline. Lame!
the show would probably be a huge hit, if they would try for real to base it on the books which is NOT done at all. They've got the actors, they've got Warner Bros making the show, if they would just use the real storyline from the books then they would be golden!
there is a reason why 13 books have been made and all are bestsellers!

To be honest, press coverage is not always an indication of how well a program is doing. People do get comps, ya know, the press being one. If someone pays them a couple of bucks to talk about something, they do it. The network has paid out plenty of money for two penny talk about an already dead show. The acting is horrible, the "drama" common and the show as a whole is lackluster. You network well with people, Perez. With everyone you talk to, you should already know why this show is dead.
I LOVE Gossip Girl!! Great show! I did like it better on Wed. nights though!
Because the idiots took so long to resolve the strike that people forgot what the heck was going on in the show in the first place. People just got tired of waiting and lost interest.
The show's new time sucks! I can never remember when it's on now. Plus it's on at the same time as How I met your Mother

because its on the cw. i feel shows on the cw can't really compete with all the major broadcasting networks. i bet it'd do really well on nbc or abc. cw just doesn't bring in the ratings. i've always wanted to watch the show, but can't bring myself to watch the cw.
I love GG but i forget to watch it on Monday nights. Needs to be back on Wednesday night.

The CW shouldn't have moved Gossip Girl from its original time slot from Wednesday nights to Monday nights… c'mon how can it compete with Dancing With the Stars, the Lakers playoff games, and even more! People are not that crazy about it! What a waste of a hot drama-filled show!

so many people (like me) probably just recorded it..
I love the show - but last nights episode was weak for many key reasons - #1) everyone was acting out of character - Serena and Chuck BFF/Serena suddenly not trusting Dan, Vanessa and Nate kissing #2) random character additions - like Nelly the super geek - who cares? Really? #3) Georgina Sparks isnt living up to the hype and the fact that she will be around for another 4 episodes saddens me. Fans need more.
It better not get cancelled.
Whats interesting is that there were literally thousands of people downloading the episode earlier today on torrent … If only those counted as well!
I love gossip girl! it is different from the books, but it still gives us what it promised which is a glimpse in to the lives of the elite teen new yorkers, even if it exaggerates. it never promised us to stay true to the books.
Okay… this is my LAST comment on here. LOL. In reply to the Gossip Girl books not being like the movie… I believe that shouldn't really matter. Most people that watch the show have never read the books. I have heard of the books, but I have never read them. What fun would it be for the show to be EXACTLY like the books? Then, everyone that HAS read the books would already know every single episode. That wouldn't be any fun!

because the script reads for slutty 3 year olds, where it should read as high school kids who live the lives of 25 year old uptown manhattan ballers.. the idea for the show was awesome, but from the beginning, it's like watching a new york version of "the OC" mixed with sesame street.

Recently they stopped showing the full episodes online and for me, as well as thousands of other college kids who relied on those online episodes, it really made me stop watching the show. Lots of the college kids that this show targets don't have time to plan their schedules around watching the show on TV. I've been trying to keep up with the episodes but I've gotten so far behind that I don't even feel like watching the new episodes because I don't know what's happening.
They should really bring back the full online episodes…they keep people interested in the show.

Perez, it's because most of the people who watch this show don't watch it when it's actually on TV…they either download it from ITunes, or watch it illegally someplace online. The show is actually really popular…people just have other ways of watching the shows that they like.

The writers strike…. to much of a gap. People got used to not watching tv. I bet all the ratings are down for television in general.
All the people who are ragging on the show have obviously never seen it. I am 24 and I love the show its the only show I have ever made sure I am there to watch and tivo. Last nights episode kept me wanted more and Its why I am looking forward to next week. it does however compete with numerous other shows and is on earlier then the first season, I am sure people will catch on and slip back into the comfort of Gossip girls cozy, fantasy world that all wish we could be part of young or old.

i have been to the show taping and met all the stars and its not them trust me, its the story lines. I have to agree with a past comment about the books and the show. If they wanted the names of the character then change the name. Many teens have stopped watching it because it is all new characters and nothing like the books which is bad because instead of teens reading the book they are watching the show and thinking ok the show is bad the book is too. But the thing is the books are SO MUCH BETTER plus even you Perez when you had the poll on their poster of OMFG. It really turns people off. My best friend goes to the high school in the city that it is loosely based on (I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I MET THE AUTHOR) told me that it shows high school students like myself that when we have a problem we dont say go pour me another cosmo or go out to clubs and not get carded. Maybe CW should read the books and change the show.
i would have watched it last night, but seeing as i live in Canada we dont get the CW. it's supposed to be airing on CTV but they still havent put it on. i'm pretty pissed to be honest, now i have to hunt around on the internet for be because the CW isnt putting the episodes on their website anymore

Come on Perez, this is an easy answer! Everybody downloads this show, no one watches it on tv. The Nielsen rating is almost irrelevant here. It's just a problem for the network to figure out how to monetize this hugely successful show whose viewership can't really be measured with conventional methods.

I think the new time is confusing. Beyond that…I think this next episode will catch major buzz. I never guessed it would be Serena that was/is gay or had a gay affair when all the gay rumors were going around! That is an awesome twist!

I absolutly love the show! Before the show I read all the books, the book series I should say was better than the show. But last nights epidoe was great I love that bitch Regina. Didnt care for Nate and Vannesa being a couple… she's soooo not good enough for him.. They make it seem like Seren is the one who will be outed next week.. This whole writers strike effed everything up so some viewers probably forgot about the show, I don;t see how you could if you didnt like the show atleast watch it for the fashion. Did you see Jenny Humphrey's Valentino bag 2 weeks ago or Serena's burberry bag last night? If they want better ratings than they need Nate in the show more with his shirt off preferably..
I wanted to watch it but keep not being home at the time it airs. Now, after the writers' strike, CW is not posting episodes to watch for free on their website. They must be losing a lot of viewers by pulling the online episodes. If I can't "catch up" online, I'm not going to tune in if I've missed a few episodes already.
Anyone who's read the books is pretty much doomed to be disappointed by the show. The books are at least 10x better.. the show is decent but some of the characters aren't very well represented: Jenny, Vanessa, and in my opinion, Serena. Blake Lively was a good choice, but they got her personality all wrong. Serena isn't supposed to be such a "good girl with a heart of gold".. shes meant to be a likeable character but with a little streak of recklessness and self-absorption. I like the multi-faceted Serena from the books ALOT better.
I think the time…I am eastern standard and it changed from 9:00pm to 8:00pm…it was alot easier for me to catch it at 9:00. Wednesday I think was a better day as well. LOVE gossip girl!!!
i personally was a huge fan of the books but the show doesn't come even close to the story lines in the books.
that is one of the reasons i don't watch the show because after the first couple of episodes it was competely different from the what i knew of the books.
i mean come on some of the characters don't even look how they are supposed to.

mondays use to have nothing on tv, but this past year it seems everything is always on monday, between one tree hill, greek, flavor of love, the hills, i love ny use to be on mondays, theres def more i just can;t remember at the moment. even wednesdays have a lotta shows on jsut like in its past time slot. they should shoot for like a tuesday or thursday.

I don't watch that network at all. I don't even check the listings for it to see what's on. I saw GG once and thought it was pretty good, but it is way too easy to forget about it because it's on that channel.
I think it's getting low ratings because the story line has now become predictable. They had to add another "bad" character? Come on! It was sweetly original before and now… blah, blah, blah.

it was because the website had the wrong time. i dont' think its anything against the show, but when I was all ready to watch it I realized that it had already aired an hour before. I think it was partially the websites fault.

Yeah, because everyone is watching it online tuesday morning like me. Ever since the strike because, half the people I know have been looking for other sources of entertainment. You can watch almost every show online now via www.surfthechannel.com or sidereel.com. At first, I only watched Grey's Anatomy online to get caught up on season 3 and to get through the writer strike. Now I just watch everything online. That's probably why no one seems to be watching. It's all online!

well most ppl watch it online or download it im surprised even these days ppl base the sucess of a show by ratings, lots of ppl just can base their lives around a show and just watch it when they have time, i loove the show and usually download it ( im in canada so i cant watch it on thewebiste )
GG is one of my favourite shows but in Canada they recently changed the time and day when its on, so its harder for me to watch it !!! I try my hardest to watch every Monday now….. Give it time it will pick back up again.
Hey! I think no one is watching because they first of all switched nights and then it has been off the air for quite some time now. Gossip Girl is the best new show of the season! I find it strange that 17 year olds can walk in a bar and get served whatever they like! I guess that's the perks of growing up on the Upper Eastside of Manhattan!! Anyhoo, it's my favorite show…so I am sure it will get cancelled like the rest of them.. Scotians love Perez!!
i tape it then watch it on my DVR. The show GREEK is on at the same time too! I liked it better when it was on Wed. nights but Gossip Girl is still amazing!!
