This has to be a bit of a disappointment for Madonna!
The Queen of Pop's new CD, Hard Candy, went on sale this Tuesday and it is expected to move between 275,000 and 300,000 copies its first week in America, which should easily put it at #1.
Good….but not great by any means!
Madonna's last CD, Confessions…, debuted to about 350,000 copies its first week.
AND, that was without much radio support for first single Hung Up.
The fact that radio has been behind M's new single, 4 Minutes, in a big way makes her expected debut for Hard Candy that much more disappointing.
Mariah Carey, on the other hand, not only sold about 475,000 copies of her new CD, E=MC2, but….that was also Mimi's biggest debut week ever.
A lot of the blame must be handed to Madonna. She hasn't done as much promotion for the new record as she should.
She's barely done any TV!
Mariah, on the other hand, pimped her new album out hardcore, doing tons of appearances from morning television to TWO nights on the widely-watched American Idol.
Madge got lazy! She did many many magazine covers and interviews but not enough TV.
She hasn't done ANY talk shows! NOT ONE!
Then, Madonna had the balls (or naivete) to refuse to talk about the CD during her junket last week - Today show, Access Hollywood - because she wanted to focus on her documentary, which screened at the TriBeCa film festival.
Mimi hustled and it paid off. She WANTED her new album to do well. And it did.
Madonna, not so much.
Thanks, Perez, for your blunt talk on the most overrated, arrogant and narcisstic performer (despite her rush of "do-gooder" antics that eerily mirror Angelina Jolie) there is out there. Look, I'm a huge Madonna fan: front row center the last 5 tours to the tune of thousands o' duckets, own every CD, single, and remix of every song, you name it I've got it. But Hard Candy is the first Madonna album in the history of her career that I just can't get into no matter how many times I listen to it. Don't get me wrong, there are a few good songs, but as a whole, I find it all a bit too generic and been-there-done-that. Madonna's not ushering anything new in with this CD, she's just following an already in-mid-flow trend that has is, in my opinion, already pretty overrated to begin with.

Frankly, I'm disappointed in this CD. It's like she said in an interview recently: she didn't know what music she wanted to make, so she just asked herself who are the people she's listening to these days and called them up and brought them into the studio with her. And in my opinion, this shows. The CD totally gives that "I didn't have a vision so I just got these guys to throw something together for me" kind of vibe.

She is an evolving artist and there's a reason she's been around as long as she has, she just keeps you interested and doesn't rely on nervous breakdowns to keep your attention. It is disappointing…but I don't care because her album is much better, and because hers will sell more around the world, making it overall more successful. Mind you, she still has a world tour to help promote the album (hers are always the most successful of all time) and she has a mini tour before that, where she is performing at Roseland tonight in fact. She's not out of it yet. She still has other, better singles to come out, not to mention future possibilities to appear on tv shows, which could very well happen. Finally, the market is down…so of course she won't sell as much as she used to. And of course she won't sell as much as Mariah…she didn't last time either. But she will sell just as much as she normally does, it just takes time, and you have to look all around the world to see that. Not just in the US. Mind you, this is only the first day predictions.
I don't like Mariah- but she worked her ass off to sell that album..and she deserves what she got. She had a great first week. Congrats to her. Madonna should have been pimping her shit out on every talk show/variety show that would have her. The magazine/free gig shit she's pulled for the last 2 albums aint cutting it. Madonna is irrelevant. So is Mariah but I guess Mariah would be considered more relevant musically if you can call what she does music. I don't think Madonna's numbers are too bad. She didn't promote as much..yes and her 1st single is shit but I think if it reaches 300k thats not what I would call doing bad. The thing is like Janet, Madonna is going to learn the hard way that promotion is key. Janet promoted Discipline the week of its release but it wasn't hardly enough and as for Madonna if she doesn't step up her promo gain Hard Candy could go the very same way that Discipline did. Lastly aside from Mariah making a great CD she promoted like a new artist as oppose to just relying on her name- maybe these other Diva's should think about that.

The fact that she would put the focus on her documentary instead of her (at the time) forthcoming album says a lot more about her as person, artist, and icon. She is, and always will be, the Queen of Pop, and crazy Mariah Carey, or Rhianna, or whoever will NEVER come close to what Madonna has accomplished in music and life, and especially for the gay community to be particular. It tells me that for Madonna, she has very much grown up and has beautifully matured into a woman who has surpassed everyone in so many ways and sees the importance of life and sees what the real priorities of life are, and is now giving back. It also tells me that she is making music for two reasons now: for fun; and because her fans want her to continue to do so. It is no longer to prove herself in the music industry, as she did that decades ago. And, don't forget, Madonna set the precedent for all those that you see today that are trying to accomplish what ever they may in the music buisness today. She is still the leader, and never ever will she be the follower.

P - this actually is a big win for Madonna. MC's last album sold 5.8 Million, so the 475,000 is less than 10% of that. Madonna's album sold 1.6 Million. 300,000 would be almost 20% of that number. mariah's album should have done over 600,000.
Personally there two points I have about Madonna's new album 1/ just because she works with the "hot" producers (which is debateable at best as it is ) doesnt mean that the results will turn to gold and 2/ Madonna has so many other multi-media projects going on music seems to be a secondary or has become a secondary interest of hers. I admire the efforts she is making in Malawi and with its orphans and her other charity projects but music I dare say is her bread and butter and to keep that fire burning would bode her well critically if you are going to put so much time and effort into something at least leave your mark on it it sounds as though she lent her voice to the project but back burnered herself so to speak to Timberlake Timbaland and their whole machine. I know Madonna does not like to repeat herself musically but she would do well to work again with William Orbit or even Stuart Price.
