This has to be a bit of a disappointment for Madonna!
The Queen of Pop's new CD, Hard Candy, went on sale this Tuesday and it is expected to move between 275,000 and 300,000 copies its first week in America, which should easily put it at #1.
Good….but not great by any means!
Madonna's last CD, Confessions…, debuted to about 350,000 copies its first week.
AND, that was without much radio support for first single Hung Up.
The fact that radio has been behind M's new single, 4 Minutes, in a big way makes her expected debut for Hard Candy that much more disappointing.
Mariah Carey, on the other hand, not only sold about 475,000 copies of her new CD, E=MC2, but….that was also Mimi's biggest debut week ever.
A lot of the blame must be handed to Madonna. She hasn't done as much promotion for the new record as she should.
She's barely done any TV!
Mariah, on the other hand, pimped her new album out hardcore, doing tons of appearances from morning television to TWO nights on the widely-watched American Idol.
Madge got lazy! She did many many magazine covers and interviews but not enough TV.
She hasn't done ANY talk shows! NOT ONE!
Then, Madonna had the balls (or naivete) to refuse to talk about the CD during her junket last week - Today show, Access Hollywood - because she wanted to focus on her documentary, which screened at the TriBeCa film festival.
Mimi hustled and it paid off. She WANTED her new album to do well. And it did.

Madonna will trump Mariah in the end. Plus, Madonna will make millions off an upcoming tour that will probably break records like all her tours do. Mariah probably won't even go on the road. If she does, she'll have to work hard to sell out small theaters. Madonna will play in huge stadiums and arena and for multiple nights in each city. Let's face it, Madonna is the Queen.
I think the new strategy is that the album is just there to promote the next tour, which is where the real money is. Tours are not there anymore to promote the album, it's the other way around now. Madonna ain't stupid, and she'll be the one laughing at the end of this. Her next tour will again break records, mark my words.

Let's face it, the music business has changed. Album sales are down and the price per CD is down while production, promotion & distribution costs are up. How much can an artist really make when a CD sells for $10 . Album sales may not be that important anymore to concert giants like Madonna. Even if she appeared on Oprah and American Idol, that would have added maybe another 100,000 to her sales. In terms of dollar amounts, that's probably just another $200,000 to Madonna's pocket. She probably earns that for singing two songs in every show. You can't compare her to Mariah cuz Mariah's whole career (hell, her whole life) depends on album sales and the charts. She really has nothing else going for her. Madonna has so much more going for her, in her career and private life. That said, 300,000 is pretty good in today's market. Plus she is stronger than anyone else in worldwide sales. I don't think Madonna will be disappointed with this.

Maybe she doesn't believe in the United Nations, as some people don't. Maybe they have never asked her to contribute her time and face, which is also blatent self promotion by the UN itself when they acquire stars for ambassador positions. She didn't have as much airplay as Mariah did. The song 4 Minutes peaked at #3 mainly due to download sales. Which makes it a very successful in sales. It should be certified platinum. The fact that Hard Candy is expected to move up to 300,000 without Madonna doing any TV promotion means it's a great successful debut!

Who cares really. Madonna is popolar in Europe and Mariah is popular here. Neither is hurting for money and can care less about the other. Buy what you like and listen to what you like. I bought both and like them both. Will say though that Madonna's album is better. Again who cares.

What Happened to madonna's voice?(she was never a great singer but) she has a MAN voice which sounds very lame.Her voice teacher gave her some bad advices.
I think it is Madonna's WORST CD she should have made something like Ray Of Light more suitable for her age.The "i try to be sexy"attitude is getting old and ridiculous.
Also Mariah's album is BORING she has a great voice but the whole CD is blah blah you want to sleep.

Madonna is on track to net her seventh No. 1 album on next week's Billboard 200 with "Hard Candy," based on first-day sales measured by the Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart released Wednesday afternoon (April 30).
Unweighted sales for the Warner Bros. album from the Building Chart's panel of reporters through the close of business Tuesday, April 29, stood at 100,000.
Among all female artists, only Barbra Streisand has earned more No. 1s — with eight. Currently, Madonna, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson are all tied for the second most, with six apiece.
Late last year, Chris Brown's "Exclusive" posted a first day number of
107,000 and finished the week with 294,000. However, sources close to the Madonna project indicate that with much of "Hard Candy's" first-day figure driven by iTunes sales, its full sales week could end up closer to the range of 225,000-250,000.
Madonna's last studio effort, 2005's "Confessions on a Dance Floor," started at No. 1 with 350,000.
Billboard estimates the merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart — Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Circuit City, iTunes, Starbucks,Borders, Target, Anderson Merchandisers, and Handleman Co. — comprise about 80% of all U.S. Album sales.
