Karla: they don't have to file taxes when they claim 10-12 dependants thru the year. Hardly anything is held out of their checks. I know this for a fact as I worked with illegals in a poultry plant and part of my job was handing out their checks to them. They would come to me when they felt their hour were wrong and I saw how little they actually pay in. They are not as taken advantage of as some (Perez) would have you beleve.
it's an interesting and legitimate report. first of all, couric just reads a teleprompter so there's little reason to be upset with her. the truth of the matter is that illegals are costing americans big bucks. taxes and health/care insurance policies have increased to cover the cost of servies and programs, like welfare, and uninsured people (which tend to be illegal immigrants, most being of latino descent) who get into accidents or seek health care, be it for their unborn child so that they can become american citizens. Most crime is commited by latinos, and the justice system provides them with attornies, again, covered by the mighty american tax payer. It's an ugly truth for latinos to face. There's nothing wrong with going for the american dream, but you have to contribute to the cake instead of taking piece after piece of the pie. My parents were immigrants who became citizens; my brother's wife is on her way to becoming a citizen; and lots of others in my family did the same. The point is is that every one has to do their part to receive all the goodies that Uncle Sam provides. Become citizens, pay your taxes, then no one would have a problem with you. If you are illegal, then you don't deserve any benefits or rights. Period.
Illegal immigration does cost us millions - billions - of dollars. People do cross the border illegaly and have babies so that they can stay here. Duh - that is a fact.
It's not a race issue, idiots. Every other country - including mexico - enforces their border and controls immigration. But people think that the U.S. should just allow anyone that steps accross the border to stay - and to get a bunch of tax money as a bonus prize?
Why don't we just give welfare to every citizen in mexico? What' the difference?
Latinos are only pissed, because the report is TRUE! They don't want to call attention to the issue, because they don't want the nation to wake up, stop being so PC, and do something about it. Enough is enough!
Ooooh, the bad POVERTY ridden pregnant Mexican women are taking advantage and getting free medical care in your country. Well, of course they do. They're poor, and your country allows it. You teach people how to treat you. You, on the other hand, pay what, $10,000.00 minimum per baby? Why hasn't your leadership effectively addressed this or addressed the southern border issue? You're too busy monitoring irrelevant political infighting and celeb gossip to perhaps take some billions from your "WAR" , build yourselves an effective border, take your leaders to task on real issues, and hold them accountable and expect them to do their jobs. For once I am kind of torn between two sides. I am hispanic, my parents borought me here when I was 4 yrs old. (legally) and I see it everyday many hispanic women living on the system. I love being hispanic I love it, but I also see what people are talking about. I just want to say there are many illegals who do pay taxes for a fact!!! There also those who lie about income to get state insurance and food stamps and that pisses me off. I see so many women having baby after baby for free and it's crazy because when i needed help no one would help we. Stop draing the system please!!!! Katie I'm not mad at you, just realize that the dollar amount may not be accurate because many hospital don't varify citizenship!!!

I was living in Ireland when a similar law came up for voting in 2004 i think. Basicly the country was having a lot of problems with immigrants coming over from Africa and other non EU countries on tourists visas, having their kids there then collecting benefit. In the end they voted to allow citizenship only of one of the parents was Irish.
It really breaks my heart to see this sort of treatment given without question to illegals then offer no help for citizens. i went to various clinics around my neighborhood when i got sick. There where 5 in all. and 4 of them told me if you are a citizen we can't help you. It was the most frustrating thing I had ever experienced.
I won't even get into the thousands upon thousands of dollars my family has paid for my mothers cancer treatment, after insurance denied the claim & medicaid.
I do believe everyone in this world has a chance to make a good life for themselves. But charity starts at home and we need to take care of the citizens we already have. INcluding the immigrants who came here by the book.

In general this IS a problem. Yes, everyone deserves a chance at a better life, America is better for it's diversity and was built by immigrants. HOWEVER it's not right at all that someone is immediately made an American citizen by being born on this soil when their parent(s) arrived here by illegal means! Even more of a problem, they aren't contributing financially to that medical care, or paying taxes - yet they are given all the benefits (when those here legally paying into the system get squat). This country is already in a financial crisis, an insurance crisis, a social security/retirement crisis (just to name a few). I don't blame all of this on the immigrants, I blame it on choices politicians have made over the years. BUT, the strain illegal immigrants add to these already exhausted, broken systems is detrimental to the country and it's LEGAL citizens (of every origin/race/gender, etc..) The world's not perfect, this country is not perfect - but it's immoral and impossible to expect that the rest of us should continue (or will be able to continue) to pick up the tab for irresponsible choices!

Many within the Hispanic community are trying to blur the lines between lLEGAL and ILLEGAL immigration. I am a LEGAL immigrant of this country and let me tell it was not easy on either my parents or me. The US has one of the broadest immigration policies. However, crossing into the country ILLEGALLY without the proper papers is breaking the law. No other country in the world would accept such ILLEGAL migrations. In fact, Mexico is notorious for turning away numerous Guatemalean refugees. Protecting one's borders is every country's right. What is to say, terrorists may not come in through these fluid borders? I'm sure they're smart enough to figure it out if 12 million people can. It is quite sad that more than 1/4 of the 45 million Hispanics in this country are here ILLEGALLY!!! We need to place fines and penalties on companies in the US that promote such immigration. There should be no amnesty for these 12 million illegal immigrants; no matter how long they've lived here, in all sense of the word, they are lawbreakers.
As someone in the healthcare profession there are numerous Hispanics that come into the Emergency room for free care and it's draining for all the community hospitals!

My Mom works for the IRS and I know for a fact that the US has over 25 million of unclaimed taxes per year because of 1 people who don't claim another thing not every immigrant has 10 kids that BS. The employment rate in America has not changed in the past 10 years and the amount of taxes the average citizen pays has actually DROPPED over the same time period. These people are doing jobs that American's don't want to do. They're just trying to make a better life for their families like everyone else. Yes, they're doing it illegally but if the only way to help my family was to break the law - I'd do it, no question. They are doing the jobs that useless Americans on welfare should be doing but won't. The problem isn't illegal immigration - the real problem is the unmotivated, uneducated, lazy masses in America that don't want to get off their asses and contribute.

so I, a citizen (of Latino heritage) who pays taxes and pays for my state health insurance, STILL has to pay $14,000 out of pocket to have my son, YET they don't pay anything!!! Then America sucks because it won't take care of it's own people!!!!!

The only solution is to have a comprehensive immigration reform act in America, where undocumented workers gain their rights to citizenship. Ok, I am hispanic and I completely agree that illegal immigrants (not just latinos!) are unfairly abusing healthcare and other benefits. They are getting a free ride and it is totally wrong. BUT what about all the people who are born and bred here in America who live off the system their whole lives?????? The problem is that illegal immigrants nowadays need to have some kind of documentation, like driver licenses, etc., to obtain jobs or whatever, and some will pay to get a hold of that info. or, just make up a number! so, unless someone is stealing an ID from bill gates to get big bucks, most IDs stolen are from the average US citizen so its under the radar. you come talk to me when you find out some mexican is using your info to obtain credit cards and loans, and you know what? there's very little you can do! you just get a little tab under you SS file saying that someone else has the same number as you, and you can't do anything to prove that you're the rightful owner vs. that illegal. oh, and when you pay your taxes and they say, "wait a minute, you have another job 2000 miles across the country so you're going to be audited for unpaid taxes", which was not you but some illegal who stole your ID, yea, you tell me how you're gonna react.
