Why should he be the prom queen? Just because he's gay doesn't change the fact that he's a guy. They have prom KINGS for a reason. It's not unfair at all, just like a man can't be Miss USA…b/c he's a man.

    102

First, let me say … way to rally, Wisconsinites! This isolated issue can NOT be used to generalize the state. (Got that, Perez? Just because Dahmer was from Milwaukee, doesn't mean the whole state is not full of gay-killing serial murders. There are plenty of things EVERY state isn't proud of.)

Yep, the Racine school was right to deny this kid a run for Prom Queen. Gay or not, he's a fella, and he gets to run for Prom KING, if he so chooses. I hope the school offered him that option.
On the other hand, if he actually WANTS to shine the spotlight on himself and stand out from the rest of his class, he can do that on his own. He can be a queen, if that's what he wants. Wear a tiara to the dance. He needs to understand that the school is just protecting a high school GIRL's desire to win that retched title of Prom Queen.

    103

Yeah, why couldn't he have just run for king???? Sucks that he got nominated and can't do it, but I bet a lot of people voted for him because they thought it was funny.

  4. danielle says – reply to this

    104

he should totally be able to run!

last year at my high school in san francisco a boy won for homecoming princess!

  5. Denise says – reply to this

    105

Perez, why haven't you put up an on-line petition for us to sign for this? I'm sure the school would be THRILLED to get some input from all of us in support of Queens everywhere!!

  6. NOT AN ORIENTATION ISSUE says – reply to this

    106

I'm really tired of reading "but the students nominated him". Ok - so if these dumb teenagers nominated a DOG, or BIRD or a character from a VIDEO GAME, would that be acceptable? My god, people… Since when do we let underdeveloped teenagers make the decisions?

THIS IS NOT A SEXUAL ORIENTATION ISSUE. I wouldn't have a problem if this was a story about a GAY GUY running for PROM KING. Gay or not, he's still a GUY and he belongs in the GUY'S role…

  7. CAZZ says – reply to this

    107

Dont blame the whole state…Have you ever been to Racine Nickname: NASTINE!? You would understand why they are so lame!

  8. Sarah says – reply to this

    108

OMFG! This is my old high school Perez and yeah people in Racine/Milwaukee are a tad bit more homophobic and closed minded than other cities. I hope this kid goes for it. He sounds blessed to have such support from his peers, usually it's them trying to break someone who goes against the grain down. Go Uriel Gomez!

  9. corriek says – reply to this

    109

I live in Racine and it's so like them to do this. They're just pissed because that boy is hotter than all the girls that are nominated with him.

  10. andrea says – reply to this

    110

That was my high school. Wow. 8 years ago I couldn't name a single out gay person there. It's nice to see that things are changing.

  11. Lindsey says – reply to this

    111

How in the hell is this unfair? He is obviously not a female. I, for one would be pissed if some dude beat me for prom QUEEN. Being as he's a fucking guy, maybe he should wise up and run for prom KING. Dumbasses. It's not always about someone trying to "keep down the gays." Good fucking God.

  12. Emma says – reply to this

    112

How can people be saying that they agree? It's gender discrimination. It' illegal to discriminate against individuals based on gender in terms of jobs, so why does this high school think that it's okay for them? It's ridiculous.

  13. sweetsishere says – reply to this

    113

Hey TIm in Boston, do your homework, Wisconsin is a big big blue state. If you haven't been there, don't assume you know anything about it. Wisconsin isn't perfect, but it probably isn't anything like you think it is.

  17. andrea says – reply to this

    117

    Re: Tim in Boston

Wisconsin is a blue state. A big one. Do some research before you assume.

  18. fried cheese head says – reply to this

    118

It is real sweet for everyone to say he should just run for King. The problem with that is the student body would never nominate him a King canadite because then it wouldn't be funny. This kid should actually be raising a really big stink over how the administration allowed the student body to descriminate against his sexual orientation and gender by putting him on the Queen ballot to begin with. The he should instead INSIST he be put on the King ballot. That would really show them.. He's going after this from the wrong angel.

  19. James says – reply to this

    119

Fuck that. I'm gay and I think that associating gay with girly is fucked up.

Why the hell does a gay guy have to be a prom queen? It makes no sense. If he wants to be the king, he can be the king. Being gay does NOT make you a female!

Also if he was running with his boyfriend or something, I'd understand (so the winning Prom couple would be gay.) Then it'd be two gay guys winning, but him just running for queen is idiotic.

  20. please no more says – reply to this

    120

good for the school, prom queen is meant to be a REAL girl, maybe they can add a prom queeny queen to make you happy….unreal.

  21. denise says – reply to this

    121

I live in WI, and yeah we do suck, we are one of the most hypocritical states and most corrupt. Everything here must be swept under the rug.. They are worried about a guy being named Queen, but I didn't see any worries over that highschool boy sleeping around with girls knowing he has AIDS… Come on WI get with the program!!!!!! Let him be queen obviously it doesnt bother his classmates that he is gay….

God cry me a river. Until he has a painful period every 28 days and has to push a bowling ball out of his vagina, he shouldn't be prom queen b/c that is reserved for WOMEN.

  24. Ashley says – reply to this

    124

im from wisconsin and i believe that if he wants to run then it should be for prom king. we had ballots in high school that listed the girl names on one ballot and guy names on one ballot and there was no guy on the girls so it should stay that way. i feel this is a way to ridicule him. just because he may be gay you don't need to point it out that he could be feminine. leave it alone. i have no problem with a gay guy being prom king, but this is for a chance for girls to be elected. just because you are gay perez doesn't mean you have to point out everything thats not fair to you and you make it sound by your title that wisconsin is not fair as a whole.

HA! I went to high school at Park. As much as I FOUGHT to get out of WI - as much as I HATE football, Bret Farve, Harley Davidson, and the general blue collar tone of much of the land - it's really NOT that homophobic. I've also lived down south in a red state and it's NOTHING like that at all. Sure it's no Chelsea in Manhattan. Yes, I was very upset with the gay marriage vote a few years back - but I went to college in MIlwaukee and a good chunk of my friends are gay. I can't recall one time ever of any of them being treated unfair or badly at college in WI. One of my friends actually covets coming back to Madison, because he misses the gay scene there.

Wisconsin - stuck eternally in the 80s with bad fried food - YES.

Wisconsin big bad red homophobic state - Nah.

  35. Court says – reply to this

    135

Racine, WI is trash…no doubt they would hate on a gay prom "queen"…that would never be a problem in Madison

  36. Sconie says – reply to this

    136

Those Westboro Babtist Bastards will be on thier way back to Wisconsin shortly. Not sure how I feel about a guy for prom queen what if he won? The prom king would probably not be to happy about that. Oh well, hope it turns out good.

  37. Sandra says – reply to this

    137

Oh, and they did tell him they would put him on and he could run on the King side. So the issue is what?

  38. Kim says – reply to this

    138

I'm from Kenosha which is directly below Racine…and an FYI to some of you fucktards, we are probably one of the most LIBERAL states, not that it pertains to this story at all. But, as a Wisconsinite, I feel I have to defend my state, as I have lived in plenty of other states and let me say…the people of Wisconsin are by far more accepting and smarter than a good chunk of the twats running around in those southern states.

With that being said, who gives a fuck who runs for what–prom nominations and that whole hoopla are rigged anyways and most people could care less about it. Let the guy run.

  39. London, Paris, Rome, RACINE says – reply to this

    139

Yup, I'm from Racine as well, and I'll admit that although the city has been on a sturdy downward slope ever since the factories started shutting down, the people there are for the most part very open minded.

In fact, there are 2 openly gay students at the high school I graduated from currently on the ballot for prom court…but as king. Does the school board have any issue with that? Of course not. There has been a long history of openly gay students winning prom king in Racine, and there has never been any uproar over that. Can you imagine having 2 males at the crowning? It would totally be unpretty to look at.

They're letting him run for prom king. I don't understand what this has to do with discrimination or homophobia, prom is a longstanding institution meant to be exciting for guys and girls. If this kid wear a transvestite or something, that's another story.

I love Racine. I love the people there. Sure, some of them are ignorant, but that's the case everywhere you go. I currently live in Boston, and I often miss the tolerant midwest. This has nothing to do with Wisconsin or the school board, it has to do with people making issues out of non-issues.

  40. raytown stay down says – reply to this

    140

At least he still gets free prom tickets for being nominated for prom king.. I can just imagine the student gov't advisers' thoughts on this subject, well actually I know their opinions since they were most certainly the first ones to raise a red flag on this subject. My guy friend won Miss Legs as a joke. The Prom Queen label isnt. But he can still and probably will win prom king.. Have fun at prom, hopefully there arent any shootings this year.

  41. Samantha says – reply to this

    141

I don't see why you all think that is unfair. He is a guy. I think only people with vaginas should run for Prom Queen. Seems like in America everyone is quick to feel discriminated against just because they are GAY. Stop being so sensitive and just get over it.

    142

lived in milwaukee my whole life, the eastside for the past 14 years, and if anyone thinks milwaukeeans are homophobic or closed-minded (Sarah #110) then you must be smokin crack! still not convinced? google "milwaukee" and "LGBT" and read one of the 575,000 entries about the LGBT scene here, or get to know the people who live here… ignorant people should just not comment, save the rest of us the energy of having to correct you.

  43. Hannah says – reply to this

    143

Holy balls, I know those kids. Racine is one cracked up place!

  44. This is stupid says – reply to this

    144

No, no, it doesn't suck. He is allowed to run for prom king. Which makes sense because he is a MAN. Just because a man sleeps with other men does not make him a woman. Now, if this were a transgendered student who was born biologically a male but has been living as a female then yes, this would suck. In that case, it would be a woman running for prom queen. I don't know why there are people out there who think that because a man is gay he is womanly. Three of my closest male friends are gay and if you tried to liken any of them to being like a woman they would probably knock your ass out.

  45. Why? says – reply to this

    145

Uh I'm all for gays but why can't he just be Prom King? Why should a girl who potentially could be Prom Queen be stripped of it by a male? He is a boy not a girl! Queen = Female, King= Male! Just be the Prom King! That is ridiculous!

  46. duh says – reply to this

    146

To all you people claiming to live in Wisconsin, yet you're saying that we're homophobic…. you must not get out much. Try hanging out downtown, or better yet, on the EAST SIDE.. there's a million gay and lesbian bars… half the merchants on the east side are gay…. WHERE DO U PEOPLE HANG OUT?? We have plenty of gays in Milwaukee.. and I never see a problem with it.

  47. Ugh How Stupid says – reply to this

    147

It would be different if they said all together he couldn't run at all! But they aren't saying that! He can run for King but not Queen! Could you imagine if we all just went around calling men - women and vice versa? Children will be fucked up! We might as well have just one general bathroom too then! No more male/ female ones! How stupid of you Perez to even post this! Go ride your stupid little blue bike around and got shot by some Bloods you idiot!

  48. Wisconsin Love says – reply to this

    148

Wisconsin=blue state w/ lots of kind, open-minded, welcoming individuals! Please don't insinuate that homophobia or narrow-mindedness is common to the whole state…just like everywhere, there are both good & bad people, but I see people & communities all around the state that embraces individuality & diversity. For those of you who think that we are sheltered, cow-riding, racist/homophobic country bumpkins, please come to our state, visit cities like Madison, Milwaukee, Appleton, La Crosse, etc., check out our rural areas for natural beauty…you're likely to see a lot of cool things, meet some awesome people, and have a great time. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at how much Wisconsin kicks ass.

  49. jj says – reply to this

    149

Thats totally fair. If he doesnt have a girls body parts then he isnt a girl and so he cant be queen.

  50. Tiffany says – reply to this

    150

Ah, Racine. This really doesn't refer to Wisconsin as a whole state. Wisconsin is a diverse enough state that Madison is one of the most liberal cities in the USA, but an hour north in Fond du Lac you cannot get a more conservative bunch. While 2 hours away you run into another bunch of liberals in the Stevens Point area. Racine is in no way indicative of the entire opinion of a state, the same way NYC is not really indicative of New York, etc. etc.

While I agree that every student has the right to run for the title of their choosing, it is tradition that the title of "queen" goes to a woman and the title of "king" goes to a man, regardless of sexual orientation. Ludwig was no less of a Bavarian King for being homosexual.

All the more power to Mr. Gomez if he succeeds in becoming prom queen. Traditions are made to be changed, tested and broken. Here in Wisconsin our generation realizes that.

  51. jm says – reply to this

    151

I agree with Kaye at #25 . . .why should he get to take a title away from an actual female?

Perez, you're so on your high horse about discrimination against gays. . .let me tell you that women have had it worse for far longer. Get over yourself.

  52. This Isn't Fair Either Perez says – reply to this

    152

I think it's unfair that you're directing this to all of Wisconsin. It was Racine…what about every other city?? Just to let you know, my high school in Kenosha has gay and lesbian nominees that CAN go after the title all the time.

  53. sasha says – reply to this

    153

    okay it's not the state.
wisconsin is one of the most liberal states in the nation

it's racine. which is basically hick-ville.

  54. stephanie says – reply to this

    154

This has nothing to do with descrimination. He is a MALE and there is a spot her can win and that's call prom king. No one is telling him to be less gay. He can be just as gay by being prom king. His stupid comparison to Mr. Legs and Ms. Physique is stupid, they aren't named after a gender, prom queen and king are. It's not about being gay, it's all in the name, there is a king and queen for a reason.

  55. Britt says – reply to this

    155

Hey Perez, this past weekend I actually took the SAT over at Park, and I actually talked to some students that attended the school. What everyone said was basically that no one had homophobic discrimination or anything towards him, but the fact that if he was to be prom queen he would be taking that chance away from another girl. Having two guys as king and queen would be utterly unfair to any girl running. This same fact could be argued for a lesbian running to be prom king. Either way it's not fair to others, and he should have just considered running for prom king instead.

  56. I lived and Racine and went to Park says – reply to this

    156

Okay, first of all this is not all of Wisconsin, so please don't generalize my entire state like that. Second, how is this unfair? He's on the ballot for king. A king is a male, a queen is a female. That's the way it is. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he has the right to run for queen.

Just because he's gay and like's the same sex doesn't make him a female. Perez, I think we deserve a correction to Hey RACINE, WISCONSIN.

    Perez and readers,
I am lucky enough to go to Park and it is generally a pretty good place to go to school. Sure there is a lot of fights and a lot of ridiculousness and we have been through a lot this year…but this is getting out of hand. Uriel, from what i have seen is a nice guy, and a good actor but all of this has nothing to do with being prom "QUEEN" , something that also has nothing to do with it, being gay!!!! I dont care if he is gay, good, great, fantasmic! Queens are female and Kings are male. I think its great he wants to be queen and he should be… when he grows a VAG!!! I do think it is important to state that it was extremely inappropriate how this situation was handled, the administators were rude and they are the ones that started the absurd thought that he couldn't be queen because he was gay…it has nothing to do with that. Although i do applaud him for challenging society's gender roles it was over blown completely. Thanks for your time and eyes…hope i could set some records straight.

Do school administrators have nothing better to do than decide who should be on the prom ballot!!!!! Really!!!!! Start worrying more about the students education and preparing them for life after high school. By the time you are in and out of college no one cares nor remembers who the prom king and queen are.

madison is ALSO in WI (one of the top 10 places in america as a gay person.) a little give and take, people.
we're also considered the single most representative state in the nation, currently.
so yes, the racine thing sucks, but high schools always overreact and do stupid shit… it's what they're for.
come on, this will be a great story for the guy who will prolly win prom queen even if they don't let him run!

Ok, Racine is an hour away from Chicago and half hour away from Milwaukee. How can this be hickish? It's just about smack in the middle of two large metro areas. Suburbia yes, hicksville… umm no way. If anything Racine is more of a ghetto these days.

I have no problem at all with the gay community, but I think it's really unfair to the girls at that school. Just cause he's gay doesn't make him a girl. It'd be one thing if he were transgendered, but he's a guy and if he's this popular he'll most likely get voted prom king. Either way though, good for him that he's excepted and embraced for who he is by his peers!

It's weird that there's only one mention of James St James' Freakshow here. That's the first thing that crossed my mind when I read this bit. The guy should totally be allowed to compete. I don't see how preventing him is justifiable at all.

Gay or not, he is still a male which would make him King. If he was a girl than he could be queen. There is no discrimination they allowed him to still run. Nothing to be offended be here just common sense.

I graduated from Park in '95 & went to the prom. The students REALLY have no say in who wins. Sure they vote, but its the faculty who ultimately decides. Shame on them for being so lame.
    I'm glad I still don't have to put up w/the b.s. politics
