Oh, and I forgot to add that they should probably put Orlando in N Florida if this happens. S Florida will always have Miami (a celebrity hot-spot) and Tampa (Bush Gardens, Adventure Island, etc.) to rake in the cash, but I agree with another poster who said that without Orlando N Florida probably wouldn't be able to sustain itself. Just my 2 cents.

#55 - During ALL of our 4 hurricanes in the last 4 years in south Florida, we barely required FEMA assistance. We take care of OURSELVES and provide for OURSELVES and help OURSELVES. Hardly anyone relied on FEMA. We don't rely on handouts in Florida. We educate and prepare ourselves before distasters hit. North Florida is basically an extension of Georgia and Alabama anyway, and waayy more conservative and country. normally i agree with you perez, however, being a resident of palm beach county, i actually think this makes sense. north and central florida certainly do not bring in the revenue that the south part of the state does, and if this were to actually go through, it would make a huge difference to us. i read the accompanying article and when they accused tallahassee of last year "trying to beat us up and now stealing our lunch money"… i had to smile… and whole-heartedly agree.
I am from Florida and when I tell people that I am from the deep south and from Florida they look confused. That's because North Florida is just like Georgia. Yeah you can say its a bunch of rednecks, but it is still completely different from southern Florida. South Florida is mostly for people who want to retire and vacationers. North Florida is a place where most people are born and raised with southern traditions, complete with accents.

South Florida (Palm Beach, Broward, Dade and Monroe) provides over 60% of the revenue to the State Gov't but the yeehaws in the Panhandle only allow about 30% back. EVERY legislator in those counties hates how the small, redneck counties rule the state. We need to split - we provide all the $$ but get little to nothing back from the state. In recent times, since 2000, I've been wondering if the states should exercise more of their rights as established in the Constitution. It doesn't seem to matter who is in charge of the Federal government — one half of the country is always unhappy and the other seems intent on being unjust towards the other. I'd say if this keeps up, the division (social, cultural, and political) within the USA will grow worse over the next few decades.

South Florida bears the brunt in taxes and insurance so North Floridians can live a comfy, country life. The three areas of Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and West Palm support the entire state's education system and it's time to give us all a break. With a split, No Florida will be on their own and forced to raise their taxes to where ours are and contribute. The forclosure rate in SoFla is up near 50% dues to taxes and insurance going into the statisphere. A split is great and I'd vote for it hands down. We've had enough!

ok so i was born and raised in florida! it is a horrible idea…i go to school in the north part of florida and live in the south part. i think if we split up the state it will ruin the uniqueness of the state! we have awesome beaches, coral reefs, and amazing national parks why would you want to make our state change. i am proud of both parts of florida! we would also have less of a voice when election comes…very bad idea!

I live in Homestead, a small town south of Miami. Homestead is very much like northern Florida. It is mostly rural and has that "Deep South" feel to it. It is culturally different from Miami and Broward. To say that all of South Florida is different from North Florida is ridiculous. Although I agree with the split. South Florida is constantly screwed over by the government. It should be based on revenue and politics, not culture. And to the people who make the ethnic about the Hispanic culture in Miami- Go visit the city. It is not the "trash-ridden cesspool" that many make it out to be. It is the most culturally rich and diverse city in the south.

Being from Miami whose sister lived for a short period in the panhandle, there are certainly differences between the two "sides" of Florida. The north is redneck and "southern." The south is metropolitan and fun! But then again, doesn't every state have a good and bad side?
