This Is Not A Joke

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & True > R.I.P. > Sad Sad

Guns kill!!!!!!!

We're all for people having the right to bear arms (within reason), but…..

There needs to be a stricter screening process and background check!!!!

Some "accidents" just don't need to happen.

Like that dude that accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son after he mistook him for a turkey!

Yeah, he was allegedly high and drunk!

Well, it just happened AGAIN.

David Schmidthuber went turkey hunting with his 14-year-old son in Oldham County, Kentucky, this past weekend.

His son Steven got separated from his father about 30 minutes after entering the woods.

That's when police say the father mistook his son for a turkey and shot him!!!!!

We're serious.

The son passed away due to the shot.

According to police, no charges are expected to be filed.

We just can't even begin to imagine what that would do to a person: KILLING your own son.

What a fucking idiot!!!!!

Dear parents: please please please please PLEASE keep your children safe at home when you go hunting or will be using firearms.

It's just common sense!!!!!

i don't think it is a matter of keeping them home….but not shooting of they are not with you. my 8 year old son goes hunting with his father several times a year, but they sit in a stand TOGETHER and don't wonder off from eachother….and all the other hunters in the club know where the other stands are and know not to shoot in that direction

People and kids die in cars all the time. Where's the cry to get cars off the road? Come on people!!!! A gun is safer than most things out there. That being said, one must always keep safety as the first priority.

Well I grew up in the rural NE and I still think this is stupid. This isn't a rural vs. urban issue this is a not using your brain issue. What a dumb ass… first taking a young kid out so they can learn how to kill and then not having the brains to make sure their kid is safe. It's so much more important to kill that "turkey" than it is to make sure your kid is safe. Way to go rednecks!

Perez, don't be a tool. How would a stricter gun regulation and screening process prevent someone from mistakenly shooting someone when they're drunk and hunting? The process is strict enough in many states, it doesn't stop accidents. It just lets the government keep check of who has what.

Hey now, I am from Kentucky, and I live very close to the county where this happened.
It is sad that this happened, but not all people from around here go out "huntin", and are not big rednecks. I was born and raised on a farm, and I have never been hunting.
There are a lot of people who do drink and use guns, but it is just like drinking and driving. IT SHOULD NOT BE DONE!
I have a question, why do people who hunt, or are from around Kentucky called hicks and rednecks? I know people from all over the US who are more red then I am, or could possibly be.

In many, many areas of the country, hunting is a major family bonding experience, as well as something of a right of passage. Most people I know took a hunter's safety course provided by the state DNR when they were 14, and even before then, nobody bats an eye when kids go hunting, just as long as they don't carry the gun. Accidents like these are just that- accidents. They're tragic, yes, but like any accident, they can be avoided with just being careful and using common sense when you're out in the woods.
Saying that you should leave your kids home when you go out in the woods to hunt just because they MIGHT get shot is like saying you should leave your kids home when you go out for a drive in a vehicle because you MIGHT get into a car accident. Both are equally useful and equally deadly weapons, depending on who's using them and how much thought and care the wielder uses while using them.

When your a 14 year old boy it's not exactly like your only 3ft tall..your large enough for someone to distincly see the difference between the size of you and a TURKEY! Was this boy on all fours in feathers?! I can understand being mistaken for ..a bear..or maybe something that has a human like figure to it…but not a 2 legged bird covered in feathers and has a BEAK! I mean for god sake…You can't seriously read this article and understand how you can mistake a PERSON for a TURKEY!!! Give me a break, i see alot of foul play — no pun intended– in the future for these cases. These fathers have to be drunk, high and have NO IDEA what a turkey looks like

My home protection is a 12 gauge, and I will be happy to blow anyone away who invades the sanctity of my hard-earned , lovingly cared for home, and my family, all of whom can fire weapons safely.
    .
However, there are TONS of assholes who go out into the woods stoned, drunk, and just plain dumb, being stupid assholes that will shoot at anything that moves. PLEASE DON'T CONFUSE THEM WITH THOSE OF US WHO RESPECT GUN LAWS AND PRACTICE GUN SAFETY.

While this is a tragedy, it is very uncommon. The two instances that you cite are very uncommon. For those two instances, there were hundreds of thousands of instances where adults and kids hunted together and nothing bad happened. How many deaths have happened to kids from drugs, drive-by killings, and sex crimes during the same time as these two deaths? Don't condem all hunters for the stupidity of one or two.

Saw a bumper sticker yesterday that read "gun control=people control." That's the mentality of the gun owners in this country. I'm so sick of the phrase "guns don't kill people, people kill people." right! with guns. I read that someone (#60) said "that's like saying Alcohol kills people." and, that it's the responsibility of the person drinking. but, someone drinking themselves to death only physically hurts the person making that decision. And, true, someone makes the choice of getting into a car drunk, but that's against the law due to the danger of the situation. Not sure I understand your argument.

Re: Ashley – You are an idiot! "the majority of people who go out hunting are also drinking.." where did you get that information! I grew up hunting, since I was 6. I have met and hunted with hundreds of people and I am now 27. I have never, not even once, seen or heard of one person drinking while they are hunting. That crap only happens once in a great while by some old, stupid rednecks. Turkey hunting just so happens to be one of the most dangerous types of hunting becuase you are usually with a partner who is calling the birds. The first thing you learn when turkey hunting is to always be aware what you are shooting at, and what is behind your target. It sounds like this guy just shot too quickly…. As for the drunk and high hunter… he should be locked up for life because he broke every rule of the outdoors and killed his kid. But dont confuse one or two idiots for the millions of responsible hunters out there!

Re: NO ONE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO POSSESS ARMS – If the laws stated that no one was allowed to own firearms, then only the criminals would have them. They have them illegally anyways. I think that all law abiding citizen should own (AND CARRY!) guns so that when a crazy mofo decides to kill random people in public places, we can protect ourselves. As for hunting: when you are hunting turkeys, you use a shotgun and aim for the head. A shotgun is accurate from a short distance (40-50 feet). That is not far- so this guy was obviously a dip shit and didn't know what he was doing.

well, i would just like to state, in MANY MANY MANY parts of the country it is VERY normal for kids to go hunting with their parent(s), especially after the age of 12 (which in Wisconsin is the age you can take Hunter Safety courses to get a hunting license).

i just want to say, as unfortunate and terrible as accidents like this are, and yes preventable, we shouldnt make ignorant generalization on topics we dont actualy know much about, now should we?

im all for better gun control, and i dont think this man should ever be aloud near a firearm again… but gun control (especially in regards to hunting rifles) is a little more in the grey area than black and white.

Hunting is Southern pastime as old as the dirt in those states. I am not justifying these actions or what happened, but kids grow up going hunting, handling guns from very early ages and this was probably so routine for them. I am a GIRL and grew up hunting in Texas, every boy I know hunts, has hunted and/or owns hunting guns for that purpose. Hopefully this man hadn't been drinking, because that is for sure something you should NOT do while handling a gun/hunting.

the interesting thing is that while perez makes a point about not bringing children out on the hunt, the 14 year old was probably hunting himself. hunting is popular in my area and a lot of my friends gained hunting licenses at very young ages. of course being drunk and high while you do it is absolutely ridiculous.

If you were a good-for-nothing and wanted to rob me, but KNEW I had a gun and would use it, you would think again and move on. Right to bear arms, concealed weapons permits for everyone! (everyone without a criminal past or no mental problems….why should the rest of us do without?!?!)

this actually happened across the street from my house. the father and son were friends of my neighbors. he was a great kid and one that will truly be missed. this was not at ALL in the same realm as the man that was intoxicated and i wanted to make that VERY CLEAR. david loved steven very very much and that needs to be known.
its tragic and our small community is mourning the loss, but please know that it was a truly tragic accident, but still just an accident.
and hug your loved ones extra tonight because things can take them away in an instant.

Do Not infringe on the 2nd Amendment just because some idiot gets high/drunk and recklessly kills his son…had it not been a gun - it probably would have occured during a drunk-driving accident. People hae a right to guns in order to protect themselves from criminals. I feel terible for the mother and the boy that lost his life…but, once again, it was a person killing another person - the gun went off because of that person. Fucking prick.

Re: Kate – You're an idiot. Where do most guns on the street come from - registered dealers? Same as drugs, right? I would feel much more comfortable having a legally owned gun in my home to protect my family. Go back to la-la land and continue living in denial……..

It's a good thing that the morons posting here are afraid of guns. Only responsible people should have access to guns.

It is fine to take your kid hunting. These dummy's shot at movement. You are taught in hunting and firearm safety classes to NEVER shoot at movement. You are to have a CLEAR view of what you are shooting at.

Hey, it's survival of the fittest!

If you're stupid enough to mistake your kid for a turkey, it's better off for the rest of us that your genes aren't alive and kicking in another generation.

you dont think its a conicidence that a kid got killed with the same excuse….its terrible that a child had to die, but it makes you wonder if that is the true story.

my dad used to take me out hunting and i never was in harm's way. I learned to fire a rifle at age 11. Its not "bad business," its tradition.
