This Is Not A Joke

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & True > R.I.P. > Sad Sad

Guns kill!!!!!!!

We're all for people having the right to bear arms (within reason), but…..

There needs to be a stricter screening process and background check!!!!

Some "accidents" just don't need to happen.

Like that dude that accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son after he mistook him for a turkey!

Yeah, he was allegedly high and drunk!

Well, it just happened AGAIN.

David Schmidthuber went turkey hunting with his 14-year-old son in Oldham County, Kentucky, this past weekend.

His son Steven got separated from his father about 30 minutes after entering the woods.

That's when police say the father mistook his son for a turkey and shot him!!!!!

We're serious.

The son passed away due to the shot.

According to police, no charges are expected to be filed.

We just can't even begin to imagine what that would do to a person: KILLING your own son.

What a fucking idiot!!!!!

Dear parents: please please please please PLEASE keep your children safe at home when you go hunting or will be using firearms.

It's just common sense!!!!!

I have hunted for many years and know many, many hunters. NONE and I mean NONE of them drink before or during hunting hours. This perception that people are drinking and hunting is a PETA bullshit stereotype. It is not the norm and those that do are morons. If they get caught they are also properly punished, so please all you feel good liberals that think only redneck drunkards hunt…..SHUT UP!

I don't think it's necessarily unreasonable to take your 14 year old child hunting with you. I could probably be a really nice, male-bonding type of time, so boo to that idea Perez.
Perhaps a better rule of thumb would be "don't shoot turkeys who look like your 14 year old son" or, more generally, "don't shoot at something you can't actually see".

I agree 100% with Perez - and I can't believe there are people who are trying to argue! How can you mistake a little boy for a turkey? I just don't understand. How sad for the little boy, his life has ended for no reason. How far away is a person from the animal they want to shoot?
I don't hunt myself and I'm not totally against it. I just don't understand why these men shoot a deer and then take pictures with the dead animal. Anyone can shoot - why not bow hunt or something along those lines? Use your physical strength to bring home dinner - then be proud to be a strong man.

So. Just because 2 individuals are ignorant enough to identify their targets, Mario insists that ALL children be deprived of hunting. Hunting and Fishing licenses make up almost 40% of the funds to protect endangered species and preserve state parks. Not to mention it teaches children responsibility and about life and death. I grew up hunting and fishing and it has made me a better person. I was always taught safe gun handling practices. Sometimes, Mario, you go way too far in your bullshit, education is the key to stopping these senseless deaths and equally senseless tirades about gun control.

First, testing positive for pot is quite different from being high on pot. The test recognizes pot in the system for about two weeks. So, the guy could've smoked a joint a week ago and still tested positive. Second, the second amendment is there to protect us from a renegade government that may try to suppress the people by force. As a Cuban, surely you can respect that idea. The founders came from England, and were well-aware of what happens to a country when the government has weapons that individuals do not have. If our military turned on us, I doubt a rifle or a handgun would do little to stop them.

    213

You people flapping your gums about not taking your kid hunting or whatever are just stupid. IF the dad had been following one of the most basic rules there is in hunting he would of never of shot his son. #1 rule is to KNOW WHAT YOUR SHOOTING AT! Hunting is as much a necessity now as it was 200 years ago. If people never hunted there would be sick and diseased and starving animals all over the city's, probably dumpster diving because they can't find food out in the woods due to the over population.

  14. and... says – reply to this

    214

All of you against hunting should do a little research. The U.S., for the most part, decimated any populations of predators that once existed all over the whole continental country. When you kill off predators (keystone species), their prey (i.e., deer, rabbit, elk, etc.) breed quickly and can destroy an ecosystem in short order. Therefore, hunting is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!! If you are so tender-hearted over the poor deer, maybe you should prevent predator destruction. A good place to start would be with the grey wolf population in Wisconsin, which Bush wants to kill off.

Our constitution it's clear: We have the right to bear arms!….Only in communist countries and totalitarian governments people can't owns guns, why? So they can't rebel against their opresors, that's why.

Your story about the boys who died are not related to guns, but to the stupidity of human beings.

  16. mngal says – reply to this

    216

The 9 year old boy incident happened about on hour from my house. The really sad thing is here in Minnesota, turkey hunting right now is only open for shooting the males, that means hunters are suppose to be looking carefully before the shoot. Well obviously this dad wasn't and then tried to play it all off as an accident… It's just sad, if I had a kid they would say at home, or be practically glued to me side while wearing blaze orange - not camo.

  17. Kat says – reply to this

    217

    220

I'm sorry, I don't agree with the last statement. People have been going hunting with their dads probably ever since hunting started. It's not everybody, just the fucking retards like Cheney that think a human resembles a fucking turkey. I say stick with killing Bambi and wait until you can see exactly what the fuck it is. Hunting shouldn't be this dramatic. What's next, Perez against fishing because some dad accidentally hooked his kid's ear. Give me a break. Don't ruin the good things in life.

  21. not cool says – reply to this

    221

The mistake isn't taking a child hunting. The mistakes are:

taking your child hunting and then leaving him unsupervised.

pulling the trigger without being 100% sure what you are firing at.

    mixing drugs/alcohol with hunting.

If you are going to take a child hunting, both of you should be wearing the orange and lots of it.

Additionally, I can't see any circumstance where I would trust a 9 or 14 year old child to remain in a safe spot on their own, while a parent traipses off to get a shot. Both those children should have been at their father's side.

What are they teaching them? Hunting or REAALY BAD ways to deal with kids you're supposed to be teaching to hunt. Both those fathers should just end it.

Hunting can be done responsibly with children at your side. Unfortunately, there's no way to screen the morons without ending a tradition and a very nice skill for the majority or very responsible hunters. If shit ever gets apocolyptic, you're going to want to hang with a hunter, just FYI.

well on the plus side (not that there really is anything positive about this entire situation), the father probably did not drive home. he probably got a ride with paramedics or police. this, in turn, could have saved more lives by not allowing somebody under the influence to drive.

    226

The first story of the 9 year old happened in my community and my daughter went to the same school as the boy. It was very difficult and hard on all the children to learn of such a tragedy. The entire community was saddened and it will take years to get over. So with that said, I can't even imagine what the father must be going through. You can judge all you want, but fact of the matter is that in this state it is not against the law to take children hunting. What happened was a tragic mistake and the Dad will forever pay for it with guilt for the rest of his life. Can you even imagine?

  27. BAD PARENTS WITH THE WRONG PRIORITIES!!!!!! says – reply to this

    227

why did he let his son get away from him in the first place?

shouldnt finding your son be the first priority when he gets lost? so something like this doesnt happen? instead of focusing on killing something for game, find your damn son you moron. makes you wonder if it really was an "accident"……

this clearly shouldnt not be considered an "accident" b/c it could have clearly been avoided.

  32. ... says – reply to this

    232

Do you know how many people hunt and how many people do it responsibly? Just because there are people who don't think doesn't mean anyone should generalize the entire population of hunters. 34. JMG says – reply to this

    234

It's not the gun's fault that the person using it is completely incompetent. Guns do not kill people. People kill people. What's needed is greater a greater awareness of firearm safety.

News/politics really isn't your strong point. No one needs more opinions that utterly lack research. Informed opinions and the exchange of those opinions are important, but uninformed opinions just inhibit intelligent communication.

I don't think it is a matter of guns and Amendment 2. It's not even about what was floating around in his system. No I don't do drugs nor do I think drugs are good for anyone.

The issue is PARENTING. A parent should know where his 14 year old son is. A parent should not be taking drugs or getting drunk around their 14 year old son if they are going to do that in the first place. A parent that is going to teach their child how to use a gun, should use better judgment and lead by example. NONE of that was being done by this parent. The issue is PARENTING. Not the gun.

On the other hand, generations of people have learned to hunt by going with their fathers….. encluding my father, my husband and myself. We learned hunters safety and fire arms safety and then started going hunting with our dad's at an early age (10, or 11 yrs old).

THIS is truly tragic, but it also happens to adults too. My uncle was killed by his son while deer hunting. People who hunt are not bad people, and part of the culture of hunters is to pass down to the younger generation how to hunt and how to do it safely. I would like to know if this kid had on any of the bright neon orange or yellow vests that young kids are suppose to be wearing while out in the woods. More than likely he did not have that kind of vest on because Turkeys are not bright neon orange or yellow. Adults need to use their brains and THINK about what they are doing. This is so tragic…especially from our perspective after losing a loved one in the same way…..

Obviously a majority of the people who have posted a response are not hunters or they would truly know that accidents like this happen more than anyone can imagine. There are fundamental rules when dealing with firearms and when individuals forget the fundamentals these things happen. It is no different than someone choosing to speed even tho a speed limit is posted. Also, to say that kids have no business hunting is a crock, i have been hunting with my oldest son since he was 6 and have never come close to anything like this. Just one bit of advice, before you judge it would be wise to become knowledgeable about what it is you are judging as it will keep you from looking like an idiot.

The problem here is not hunting and/or carrying guns. It's people not making absolutely sure of what they are aiming at, and knowing where the rest of their hunting party is at all times.

Ha ha, you are all so clueless about the actual written law it’s comical. It’s good to see there is a healthy crop of moronic people so willing to be oppressed and stepped on; it’s what keeps our government moving. There are a much higher percentage of people with guns who will never have an accident or commit a crime with a firearm statistically speaking. The leading cause of death in males in this country is heart disease primarily caused by obesity, so in the case of most of the fatso people posting on here, this would mean suicide.

By the time I was 4, I had concluded that my father was Lucifer. By the time I was old enough to go hunting with him, I had a plan to shoot him. But I never did.

WHO the fuck thinks that their 14 year-old son is a turkey??? WHAT The fuck is up with that.. and guns shouldn't be allowed what so ever. Guns are becoming the American culture! Eu hates the US.. you know why. because they are so fuckin stupid.. the ppl are so unacknowledged and retarded and blind! I feel sorry for the most of the American ppl!!

Actually you are a dumb ass. We do hunt for meat. I havent bought beef in years. So who are you to judge what I eat? I do not use it at an excuse.

All of yall might want to read up on the advantages of hunting. You also might want to read post #217 - and… Not only is an ecosystem in trouble but the health of herds.

Oh, btw, step into our house unannounced. You'll be leaving feet first. There is a gun in most rooms of our house. Yeah, pretty redneck isnt it? But while there are druggies and dumb asses that would rather steal than get a real job, there will be a gun accessible to me at all times. Oh and stray dogs that seem to think mine need to be their snack.

What the fuck is going on with those noob grown-up men? Have they not seen a live turkey? How the fuck does someone mistake a 14 year old human for a turkey? Fucking turkeys aren't even that big, and they have fucking feathers and a fucking tale, plus they fucking GOBBLE. This is fucking crazy, the USA is fucking gun crazy. Who the fuck cares about "right to bear arms" that was fucking back when people lived in the wilderness and had to fucking protect themselves against "the savages" and crap like that, not some fucking right to fucking kill a fucking turkey.

Have I reached my daily limit of saying "fucking?" Oh no, need one more, whoever will be the new president of the USA needs to fucking re-write that fucking gun law and to hell with the fucking NRA now that Charlton Heston is dead.

Sad story but people on here talking about how no one but the police should own guns must be 15 and getting liberal talking points in skcool oops i mean school sorry got my great education from public schooling but anyways if you think your so cool for not owning a gun put up a sign in your yard saying that you don't. I bet you'll feel real safe after that, even if you yourself do not want to own a gun, feel safe that we have a law that says you can because that itself will make criminals second guess robbing your house wondering if they break in if they will get their head blown off. Criminals kill with illegal guns! Do you really think they get them registered? Hell no bc you can trace them that way. So yes real smart, don't allow the average good person to own a gun only the criminals and the cops who will be no good to me when they arrive to my house after i am robbed and shot! Oh yeah and quit bitching about hunting if you don't like it don't do it, and i'm sure you are also someone who will get a fastfood chicken sandwich in which the chicken is raised in a coop and its feet actually never get to touch the ground thats much better than living freely then killed for food. Animals kill other animals for food and it may be sad to witness to some but hey it's life we all need to eat and some people and animals including myself eat meat get over it!

People kill people, not guns! You take away the right to bare arms and who ends up with the weapons? The criminals, so how do we defend ourself against a deranged crack head packing heat who wants to kill us and rape our daughter? I don't think a lame manuever is any match to a loaded gun…

Narrowminded idiot….

Re: Renelle – LOL You don't apparently read enough to know that your "reasons" for killing animals in teh wild (feeding your fat gut, "protecting the ecosystem" etc) have been shot all to hell. For instance, morons like you don't shoot the old and sick do you? No, you go fo rteh pride of teh herd so you feel really big when you kill it… that actually weakens the herd. You nasty little blood sport doesn't protect the ecosystem you f*cking retard.

Just say you cream you jeans when you kill a live animal and be done with it. at least that would be honest.

Oh yeah and for the idiots from other countries( i call you idiots because you come on an american website and talk rudely about our laws and people) need to get a life, we don't care about what you think. We like how we are so get over it and quit watching our movies if u hate us and depending on our bad ass country for support in any war or crisis. For all these countries that so called hate us we are still number one in chartitable donations and food around the world so i don't know what your deal is, i think your country just has a political agenda its been cramming down your throat for so long you start to believe it. Remember this also this country is made up of people that migrated here more than a hundred years ago so who knows we might be related haha wouldn't that be ironic. So be kind you might be a long lost cousin and hey i have an idea maybe if you ever wonder to this side of the pond i will take ya hunting yeeeeeehaaaaw asshole!

Who are these people that proudly proclaim: "I've been hunting for years" and "it's a tradition around here?" For the life of me, I will never understand how a person can get up, get dressed and go out with the sole intention of inflicting paralyzing fear followed by intense pain and ultimately death upon another animal. That's right, a little info for the uninformed - we are all animals - part of the animal kingdom, both equally deserving of the right to be free of pain and suffering and the freedom to live out our lives. When you start to separate yourselves from the "non-human" animals, you are asking for karma to keep a close eye on your actions. Oh and Renelle - "advantages of hunting" is an oxymoron… like you!
