75 students arrested in San Diego State University drug bust
Dozens of San Diego State University students were arrested after a sweeping drug investigation found that some fraternity members openly dealt drugs and one even sent a mass text message advertising cocaine, authorities said Tuesday.
Two kilograms of cocaine were seized, along with 350 Ecstasy pills, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, hash oil, methamphetamine, illicit prescription drugs, several guns and at least $60,000 in cash, authorities said.
Of the 96 people arrested, 75 were students. Eighteen of the students were arrested Tuesday when nine search warrants were executed at various locations including fraternities, said Jesse Rodriguez, San Diego County assistant district attorney.
The undercover probe, dubbed Operation Sudden Fall, was sparked by the cocaine overdose death of a student in May 2007, authorities said. As the investigation continued, another student, from Mesa College, died Feb. 26 of a cocaine overdose at an SDSU fraternity house, the DEA said.
Those arrested included a student who was about to receive a criminal justice degree and another who was to receive a master's degree in homeland security.
"A sad commentary is that when one of these individuals was arrested, they inquired as (to) whether or not his arrest and incarceration would have an effect on him becoming a federal law enforcement officer," said Ralph Partridge, special agent in charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in San Diego.
Some defendants were scheduled to appear in state court to face charges Tuesday.
During the probe investigators discovered that in some fraternities most members were aware of "organized drug dealing occurring from the fraternity houses by its members," the DEA said in a news release.
"Undercover agents purchased cocaine from fraternity members and confirmed that a hierarchy existed for the purpose of selling drugs for money," the DEA said.
The district attorney's office said search warrants were served in San Diego and suburban La Mesa, including the Theta Chi fraternity house and several apartments.
A member of Theta Chi sent out a mass text message to his "faithful customers" stating that he and his "associates" would be unable to sell cocaine while they were in Las Vegas over one weekend, according to the DEA. The text promoted a cocaine "sale" and listed the reduced prices.
Theta Chi's San Diego chapter declined to comment.
"We're talking to our advisers," said John Phillips, a past president of the chapter.
Dale Taylor, the fraternity's national executive director, said he was "obviously shocked and saddened" by the allegations.
Theta Chi has prohibited the San Diego chapter from group activities like parties or sports and will investigate additional disciplinary measures, up to expulsion of members or the entire chapter.
Theta Chi, based in Indianapolis, has 131 chapters in the U.S. and Canada and more than 161,000 initiates. It was founded in 1856.
The San Diego chapter was founded 61 years ago and has 65 members.
"They were on the upswing," Taylor said. "They had improved their recruitment. They were trying to raise money for a new house."
University police and federal drug agents worked together in the investigation, making more than 130 undercover drug buys at locations including fraternity houses, student parking areas and dormitories, authorities said.
Shawn Collinsworth, executive director of the national office of Phi Kappa Psi, said he was told by two of the SDSU fraternity chapter's leaders that four of its members were arrested. He said the fraternity is cooperating with the investigation.
"It isn't behavior becoming of Phi Kappa Psi," Collinsworth said.
San Diego State is one of the largest schools in California's state university system with about 34,000 students. The campus has an active network of fraternities and sororities.

As a student at SDSU! I think the funniest part of this wholoe thing was that theta chi was the ring leader! They are the nerdy frat! haha who knew those nerds knew how to party!?!

I am in the Greek Life at SDSU, and the two main frats that were caught (Phi Psi and Theta Chi) are not well known around campus. To be truthful they're known to be the "lame" fraternaties. I am in a sorority, and no one in my house hangs out with those guys. The more popular houses, such as Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, and Kappa Sigma would not get invovled with that amount of cocaine and weed. Not to mention they would be stupid enough to deal in large quantities in the first place. I am not saying that only lame frats do blow, but it is not as prevalent as the media are saying it is throughout the Greek system. I am sure if the DEA went to USC or UCLA they would find as much if not more cocaine. It is unfortunate this had to happen at my campus, but similar results would be found at various other univerisities throughout the US.
San Diego State is open again for business. Now the government can move in and sell their drugs without competition. Drugs have survived in symbiosis with man for millions of years, now our government seems to think they can stop that. Drug war has been on for well over 70 years now, seems like drugs are winning. That amount of pot is really an insignificant amount, believe me they are making more, tons more. Our CIA is in Afghanistan to control opium. They are in Columbia to control cocaine. We are in Iraq to control the oil. There is little help for the people of America to get by as we spend billions on the war machine. America is surely a dying paradigm.

As a senior at sdsu, can I just say, fuck the Greek system. I have been giggling off and on with glee since this story broke but it would have been much better had the sorority houses all spontaneously combusted. If only the combination of stale beer and dried cum created an explosive chemical reaction.

how about you actually read stories and find out the facts before you start rambling on about random shit that has nothing to do with this story. this issue is about drugs on campus not race (and if you look at the people who were arrested, there's only like two white guys, but that is besides the point).
I currently attend SDSU and I just wanted to say that it was only 18 people arrested yesterday and that it had totaled about 75 students over a course of a year for this sting operation. We are not the only school that has a drug problem and I feel that the issue is a problem at our school but it is not the only issue. People make mistakes and unfortunately these people can never be able to attribute to society the way that they had planned. It has been an exact year since the death of Jenny and I feel that we should be remembering her and Kurt. Lets not forget these people and not allow them to be overshadowed by this operation.
THIS WAS ON CNN TODAY AND ALL THE GUYS IN THE FRATERNITY WERE CONNECTED TO THE MEXICAN DRUG CARTELS. IT IS NOT FUNNY BECAUSE TWO COLLEGE STUDENTS DIED LAST YEAR AS A RESULT OF THIS FRATERNITY. ALL OF THESE GUYS WERE FROM WELL-TO-DO HOMES, SO THEY HAVE NO EXCUSE.
Its so fun being here on campus with all the media attention here latley! SDSU EVEN MADE PEREZZZZZ YAYAYAYAYAYAY its way more important then the news to us!

first of all, YES there were deaths related to cocaine overdoses at sdsu in the past year. and second, i am so glad that the school finally attempted to do something about the drug issues at sdsu….the amount of drugs that are all around state is just shocking. true, drugs will be everywhere, but this was just out of hand. and they deserve every bit of 'punishment' that comes their way.

i am a sophomore at sdsu and i am writing to someone who said they never heard of anyone dying of a cocaine overdose…well you're wrong. a girl, in the greek system, died last may from a cocaine overdose. and feb 2008 another guy died because of a drug overdose at one of the frat houses.
however, i think drugs are a problem at every college…not just sdsu.
sdsu is still a great school.

i'm a student at SDSU… 2 people died both from cocaine overdose within the last year.
one was a Fall '06 freshman and alpha phi sorority member who was found dead in her apartment may 2007, the other was some guy who found dead of an overdose in some fraternity… i'm not really sure which one it was though..

People need to get their priorities straight, which is their education. I've been at SDSU for a year now as a transfer and its crazy how much partying goes hand in hand with being a SDSU student. Sure it's part of the college life, but fuck its non-stop over here. I guess when you have mommy and daddy paying your way you can afford to binge drink and snort all you want every week. I guess I just have no time for that bullshit since I actually have to WORK to put myself through completing my education at State.
On another note it's pretty crazy how SDSU is getting all this national attention for all this crap. It's no secret here in San Diego that SDSU is the biggest party school in the county, UCSD (smart, asian school), USD (smart, rich, catholic school), Point Loma Nazarene (smart, EXTRA RICH school), and CSU San Marcos (SDSU reject school) don't even touch us. Funny how if its not one thing it's another; the meth lab set up in one of the chemistry laboratories about 3-4 yrs ago, the syphilis outbreak like a year or two ago, and now this. Whatever, all I'm concerned about my degree. Its definately UCSD for grad school though.
By the way, most of the SDSU frat boys are a bunch of douchebag tools and the sorority bitches a bunch of skanks. I live down the street from Frat Row and Montezuma where all the sororities are and that is my everyday observation. I ain't trying to stereotype but all those shitheads stereotype themselves
