If you add up all her children, she's been pregnant for 11 years non-stop!!!!!!

Maybe I should rest my case, because speaking to deaf ears really brings a lot of stress and I don't want to age faster! But just my two cents on your Texas scenario: Hypothetical scenarios are useless simple because they are not real. They put complex issues into simple terms, and that is just not a valid way to make arguments. I rather stick to statistics. The truth is, there is a reason some land has never had people, either because it is a natural habitat to many beautiful species or because it just doesn't have resources for people to use. As to the other things. I said suggest things that are not being done. You are smart enough to be Al Gores or Prince Charles Parrot, but seem to lack thinking skills that helps one imagine new ways that will really catch on with everyone. The log cabin in the woods without cars has already been tried, a lot of folks did not like it so we invented automobiles.
I think the concrete of the city has really taken a toll on you because you seem to believe the whole world is a crowded neighborhood. Might I suggest you hop a bus and spend some time in the woods? They really do exist.

Re: ignatiusrgrace – The world is overcrowded in the sense of supplying resources, not just space-wise. I know you are waiting on suggestions to better the world, aside from controlling population, so here are a few (people will hate my suggestion but that's what happened with the civil rights movement and look where we are) First, people should be taxed based on their impact on the environment, not on their age or marital status. Lets say we had a points system: you get points for being single, not having kids, driving a hybrid car, living within 5 miles of work, having one car registration under your name (meaning you don't buy your teenagers a vehicle), for not having a vehicle, for having solar panels in your house, etc etc. So basically, nobody is telling you not to consume and have kids, the more u get rewarded with taxes.
Re: gladiatr – It's getting real late, so I have to go, but I wanted to say that my idea of taxes takes it many levels for those on welfare. I would never deny anyone welfare, but if I were president I would make it mandatory that to get welfare for your 3rd child, you had to present proof of sterilization. You have absolute right to refuse, just don't expect a check from Uncle Sam. Now I have to go to sleep, but thanks everyone for reading. I hope at least one person thought 2 seconds about my suggestions, as crazy as may seem. I honestly believe it's going to come to worse if we don't start slow and take a few measures.
Ig says…Gees. I was going to go to bed but since I got a reasoned response I will postpone it. I dont agree with some of your stuff but could go with you on others. How about this. I know that the government has spent a lot of time and money, with regards to planning future infrastructure, researching ways that would allow more people to work out of their homes, so they would not have to drive, your five miles to cut pollution, cut our need for oil, and cut the need for such elaborate road systems we are having to create to handle all the traffic.
How about people who show that they have responsible families systems, that will facilitate at home, on line public education, say two or three days a week, with only two days at a school building. think of the saving on gas, steel, wood, paper as class rooms go paperless… and if students only go to a building two days a week, you only need half as many school buildings as you would rotate days. And for the kids that dont have at home support, hire people like Cavy to mentor them? Or not? Maybe have them go to school like before would be a better idea.
Hopefully some day cavy will be able to turn some of his anger energy into creative energy and make us all proud by coming up with some way to save the planet that does not infringe on my right to enjoy it with whom and how many of whom I choose. You sound like an inexperienced 15 year old that watched an Al Gore movie and decided that one family is this horrible carbon footprint without gettting the specifics. Guess what….they use clothe diapers. That means that compared to one human like YOU……all 18 of them leave less of a carbon footprint.
Besides, it is not just humans that are a problem. OIL spills. Emissions. Those are bigger issues that need to be solved. Go after big companies. I wish you could see the bigger issue than bashing this family. Look at your family. They actually have two sets of twins, so yes, 11 years of pregnancy is correct. This is just absolutely irresponsible. The children do all of the cleaning, cooking and the teaching of the younger ones, and mom just sits on her butt, does nothing and gets knocked up. Time to get a TV in their bedroom. Apparently they've never heard of adoption? They should quit bringing more mouths to feed into this world. There are plenty of children in America who need someone to love them, and since it seems this family has so much love to give and share, why not adopt some children and get a TV for their bedroom while they're at it.
Pathetic. All the tax deduction and credits that theses low lifes get are just being passed on to the rest of us. There needs to be a cap on how many tax credits you can take for having kid after kid. This isn't admirable one iota.

This is wrong on so many levels. I have seen the special on TLC and these children are raising each other, the parents are not raising them. I am sure that the children would like to be just that and not be responsible for raising their baby brothers and sisters. I would like to see how these children are going to be when they grow up and are out on their own. I would also like to see how they can afford thsi number of children. I did see that they have built their house basically themselves but the children seem to be lacking something. I can't put my finger on it but they were strange when interviewed for the special. I hope that they have private insurance and we are not footing to bill for the births. I find it VERY hard to believe that and 2 people could possible give these children the time I mean actual time that they each deserve and need to become well rounded children. These people just like the 'fame" and the money that comes with it.
Unless he is a wealthy as Bill Gates…how do they pay for these children. I was recently flipping through the tele and saw they had a reality show. I venture to say that they are/or were supporting their family with public assistance. That's me and you folks! Children are blessings but come on…a reality show does not last that long.

Ok I have known the duggars for 13 years! They are really not as crazy as everyone thinks.I mean yeah maybe they do have more kids then the average person. But who cares. Okay, I have read some of the comments and done my research on this. Here's one point: Do we know how many people have chosen not to have children by their own personal choice? Is this a more morally correct choice than having 18? I would imagine there are hm, at least 18 women in the world who have decided not to have children?
Come to think of it, 3 of my 4 aunts decided not to have children for one reason or another. If these women have the freedom to not procreate, then why would it make sense for us to pass our judgment on this woman who has made a different decision?
I hear what you're saying about overpopulation, global warming, etc. But I'm pretty sure that- statistically- as far as caucasian Americans go, they are the last group that we should be concerned about overpopulation with.

Seriously, most people do not care about the issue one way or another. I have to say that truly speaking it is not a family that is the issue, but the way products are manufactured. If the products were green and we could consume them while maintaining green and eco-friendly than the eco-people would not have an issue. We, as American citizens, have started relying on other countries so much for grains and other needs that we've stopped producing which is another mistake. We need to produce and people need to go after companies that are not eco-friendly not each other. This is silly. White American procreate the least and have the least strain on the country statistically………people who are bashing really need to look at other ethnic groups within our society (some not even here legally) and see statistically what they produce. I know we are talking overall here, but limiting the number of children people can have is absurd and not the correct answer. Producing products that are green is better. Use energy wisely, the people who are so passionate need to plead and work towards answers and not bash each other. I'm talking to the people that do care here obviously and there is a way to care about the enviornment and protect a persons right to pro-create as well.

I saw them on TV, and they are actually a really wealthy family. The dad owns several business, and is an entreprenuer-type. They got married really young and he started like a used car business or something and made a lot of money quickly. They don't live off donations. You should see their house, it's huge! If this is how they want to spend their money…..

I think that companies should be more responsible with what they manufacter and how they manufacter their products and we as consumers could really do our due diligence by doing eco-friendly things that don't diminish the environment. I got upset because people were going after one family (or so it seemed) instead of the whole picture. Cavy, you are really passionate about things and it my book that is brilliant……I'm obviously passionate, but could put my energy to better use and I've been becoming more self aware of what I can do to better my choices. It was really upsetting me when people got so gross about this Mother (I know that wasn't you, you were not crude)…..we just seemed to be the only ones still passionate about this topic to keep it going!
