In my home town, there are quite a few families that have 12+ kids. One family actually had 21 children. The families support themselves and are nice and normal. You shouldn't judge people so much.

Women like this only feel "validated" if they are pregnant. It's a "skill" they are "good at" and have to stay pregnant to feel valuable and viable. It is a form of hoarding, like people who collect dogs and cats to the extreme. In families like this, the older children really raise the younger children. It is a selfish way to live, no matter how wonderful these parents portray themselves to be. They've created their own cult. I feel sorry for the older children, and for ALL of the children, really — I saw that they have to SCHEDULE "Mommy and Me" time alone, which makes this whole scenario so wrong and so unhealthy. They are being raised in a HERD MENTALITY. That's for animals. Sad.

The thing is, these people don't take care of their children - the older siblings do. The older girls do all of the laundry, cooking, and most of the other housework. The older boys spent the better part of three years building the faily dream home with their father. The older children are not allowed to date, and the girls do not receive the same education as the boys because they are only expected to be wives and mothers. Furthermore, the Duggars are basically the poster children for the Quiverfull movement which has an unusual focus on declining white birth rate and rising birth rates among non-white communities.
In short, these people are creepy and dangerous! Their children will grow up to be seriously fucked up.

I admire that they can raise all these kids without going into credit card debt and whatnot, but at what cost to them in other ways? Also, how do you keep track of all those names! And do you keep having kids just because you can and don't stop until what, your body says "No thanks, no more kids for me!" There are some qualities I admire about this family but others that I feel bad for.

Actually, they are called "Quiverfulls" which basically means that not only do they not believe in birth control, they also don't believe in natural family planning, and welcome every child as a gift from God. They tend to homeschool and are very conservative in dress to the point that girls are not allowed to wear pants or cut their hair.
I love this show because I just find it fascinating! An interesting thing to note is that Michelle Duggar became pregnant with her first child while on birth control and, according to her, that is why they decided to be come Quiverfulls. I don't think really think homeschool is great for children but I will give them props for one thing, all of the children play piano and violin from the age of 3. Other than that, I think the whole thing is damn creepy…

They are a very nice family and are not "sick" in any way. They just love each other and love their children. Our society does not agree with it b/c everyone is so selfish! They choose this and they should be allowed to do it. The children are exceptionally well - behaved, care deeply for one another and show respect not only for their parents, but for others too! I think they are wonderful. I think more people on this idiotic website should look at the "big picture" and not criticize a nice family that decides to have children. they can afford their children financially and have an awesome home they all helped build. they deal in real estate and are secure. These parents are relatively young, in their early 40's/late 30's and the possibility of them having several more is real.
However, the size of that family puts a huge impact on the earth and resources!
It's incredibly selfish. They produce so much garbage on a daily basis and they have to transport their family in a small bus so fuel usage is high. The laundry room has six washers and six dryers.
I seriously hope they recycle, grow their own food, harvest rainwater, compost and have solar panels to reduce their carbon footprint on the earth.
