It's official!
Speed Racer has bombed!
The film took in an extremely disappointing $6.6 million on Friday.
It is expected to take in an embarrassing $23-24 million for the weekend.
Earlier this week, Warner Bros. was expected its film to make in the 30s. Last week, the number was in the 40s. Unfortunately, it's gonna debut in the low 20s.
Iron Man, on the other hand, opened to about $100 million last weekend and it's expected to remain #1 this weekend.
Good reviews probably helped that film and the shiteous ones probably hurt Speed Racer.
Warner Bros. spent close to $200 mill to make Speed Racer. They better make a ton of cash internationally, or else some heads will roll!

I saw the movie mainly because my kid wanted to but I actually enjoyed it. It is actually really good.
Iron Man is a terrific film. the only problem with it is the AWFUL, dead eyed, aimless and emotionless performance by Gwyneth Paltrow. She is so bad that the audience LAUGHED a couple of times when she spoke. How can she talk through her nose like that? Honestly, there is one scene, when she is trying to open a door, where her delivery of her lines is worse than you see in a bad kindergarten play. She looks old and matronly and can't deliver a line worth a crap. She deserves the razzie this year!
How much are they paying you to trash this movie.

Watch the movie and you will be entertained and may even see things a little more clearly.

I watched both Iron Man and SpeedRacer and I honestly thought there were better graphics and more thrilling parts in SPEEDRACER! I wouldnt listen to any of the shit reviews because it was actually better than Iron Man!
Perez… As much as I enjoy reading your daily gossip, I've got to say I was very disappointed to see your comments on this movie. I am proud to say that last night together with my husband, son and friends we PAID TO SEE "Speed Racer" ; truth be told, we thoroughly enjoyed it! I am sucker for romantic dramas, romantic comedies, historical movies… but this was a well done - entertaining movie by the Wachowski Brothers and Warner Bros. Maybe not an Oscar Winner drama (some of which I have not enjoyed a bit), but wonderful special effects, and even a very good musical score!!!
After a really stressful and hard week at work, it was refreshing to watch a movie that kept me interested, had me laughing and was full of color! Have you ever been to a Grand Prix, Indy, Formula 1?? Probably not… you will make more sense of this movie if you enjoyed racing… yes cartoon like graphics, futuristic set and all… what do you expect from the Wachowski Brothers? This is what they are all about… And they are great at it! Matrix anyone?
Lay it off… go see the movie.

This movie was completely ridiculous and trippy…. but in a good way! This seems like one of those films, like Rocky Horror or Xanadu, that's going to be a complete cult classic. It's so cheesy and bad that its actually good!

i went to see it out of boredom yesterday and it was awesome! yeah, the very beginning isn't the greatest, but the movie rocked! don't judge perez unless you've seen the whole thing!
No, the problem is that Perez propositioned Emile Hirsch, and Emile politely told Perez that he wasn't interested. Perez, like the sad tired queen that he is, is getting his revenge by trashing the movie.

The movie was absolutely amazing, maybe the reason that people aren't going to see it this weekend is because of the negative rap your giving it, along with the critics. Most of the time the critics don't know what theyre talking about anyway, and here is a good example. Its not just for 6 year old boys, it was so entertaining, and a new favorite. I highly recommend it. And maybe you should watch these movies first before bashing them.

I Saw Speed Racer today b/c of my son… I didn't expect much of it but it was very interesting… the story wasn't perdictable and the action and graphics were really good… i hate movies w/ cheap animation but this was was pretty good and not as corny as i thought it would be… i was pretty suprised and pleased that I wasn't bored oout of my mind. I thought the movie fit the younger and older viewers very well… You should see it before you judge it.

So Warner Bros. has a big bomb on their hands with Speed Racer. They spent 200 million to make the movie so they better hope they make it overseas because this opening weekend isn't going to cut it! lol.
All I have to say is, KARMA because the head of Warner Bros. announced they weren't doing anymore movies starring women, blaming women basically just for them producing crappy movies and promoting them idiotically. But it's easy to blame all women when movies bomb yet the men can get bomb after bomb. Now they have Speed Racer. What are they going to do blame Christina Ricci now? What's their excuse? That studio over there is a mess and they need to take a look at what the real problem is, they are greenlighting crappy movies! Has nothing to do with the lead star having a vagina.
I think once the word gets out, Speed Racer will do fine. It was a great movie! People need to remember the "critics" are idiots.
Um, I saw this on Friday, and I liked it. Why do you hate on it so much? If anyone was going to see this as a film they're retarded. It's not art. It's a summer hollywood blockbuster. It's an entertaining, live-action take on the anime series. Bright colors, melo-drama, the whole nine.

I think it is intersting that you talked about Drillbit Taylor taking in only 10.6mil it'a opening weekend as a disappointment, but were not nearly as hard on it as you are on this flick. Spped racer is expected to make over twice what Drillbit Taylor, LEatherheads, etc. made their opening weekends, yet you were much kinder about them. What is the deal with this movie as you have been ripping on it all week. I mean, I would not go and see it, but I am just talking about consistency among the way you talk about what films take in.

Saw Speed Racer yesterday…. Didn't know what to expect, but I LOOOOOOOOVED it!!!!! I laughed so much and got soooooo excited many times!!!! It's visually stunning, too!!! It's such a colorful world that it seems like living inside a cartoon! GO SEE IT!

everyone I know whom have seen it says its good. I don't know why the film bombed. I'm seeing in Imax tomorrow. Must be Iron-Man movie that I thought was just ok not worth seeing more then once in the theater.

The movie actually only did 5.9 million on Friday (as reported by boxofficemojo.com). The budget was reported at 120 million with an additional 70 mill in marketing, so Perez's 200 mill estimate wasn't far off. I haven't seen the movie (so I won't comment on the quality) but with what looks like a 20-something million domestic opening off 190 spent- you have to call that a bomb.

It's apparent that somewhere along the line Perez was dissed by someone or something dealing with this movie, so he decides to attack it. Bet his clothing line won't even last a year! Remember the call of Perez "CASTRO IS DEAD" (thanks MP for reminding me of how adamant he was with that fiasco - LOL). Insider my arse!

Personally, I think this sucks. Just saw the movie this morning and as a fan of the tv show, I really thought it was a brilliant piece of film. The imagery and the strong use of the contrast of color to exploit many of the original facets of the show was simply amazing to see in a live action version..If not to the mainstream success, this will surely end up a cult classic. I personally have recommended it to many of my film class teachers as a film to add to several segments of their intro to film classes.
I saw it and it really isn't bad at all. People should really rely on their own judgement, rather than going along with what the critics and other people say. It's disappointing how it's being put down so harshly by some–not all–critics and that's making no one want to go see it.
I went on Friday afternoon to see this. I weary because of the reviews but I love Christina Ricci and the Wachowski Bros, so I went anyway.
I loved this film. The race scenes were fantastic, and so was Ricci. I recommend!
I took my kids, ages 3 and 6 today. It was pretty entertaining but a bit too long.

I dunno, it looks kinda like a cute movie to me. I mean, it's based on a kid's cartoon, so the director wanted to be faithful to the movie's origin. Definitely not something I'd want to watch over and over, but for what it is, it's not bad.
I just saw the movie in a full auditorium. The audience seemed to like it. They clapped at the end. If it becomes a bomb . . . too bad. I thought it was damn good and very original. But I suspect that the visuals are too way out for the critics to accept.
Besides a really bad script. The directors put too much in the visual. I know that we live in the A.D.D and A.H.D.D or just kids and people can't focus and have the mind span of nats. This film has too much going on and doesn't resemble the cartoon in many ways. This film may have better success when it goes to DVD. To the directors: so what's next "Terrance and Philip - Those Gas City Blues?" Next time try to write something original.

The beginning is kinda stupid but once it gets rolling, really it's pretty awesome. You have to get use to all the overstimulation and beaver cleaver nonsense. Eventually your brain sizzles and pops and then it's GOOD.
Oh yeah. Matthew Fox was suuuuper hot in this movie.

This is much better than Transformers, hands down! It is not near as good as Iron Man, but it doesn't need to be because it's a completely different type of movie.
The movie was AMAZING if you take it for what it was: cheap. escapist entertainment. Critics need to just sit back and enjoy, and stop taking everything so seriously. If every movie made was Oscar material, nothing would ever be watched. Honestly, how many of the award-winning movies each year actually get seen?

I saw this movie on Thursday, an it doesn't suck as much as everyone else is sayin'. Yeah, it's so not a masterpiece but it's funny, I mean the movie is about 2 and something hours long and kept me awake during all that time, it's not boring, 4 real!!! Is a very easy going movie and I think that was the plan all along. I must admit the colors are a little bit too much for me but as I said before, that was the plan… so stop with all the shit about it, go see it first and then make any comment you want!!!
This was a GREAT movie! we just seen it tonight! And all five of the kids we went with LOVED it!!! So did I! (And my dad and brother too)…I think the trailer sucked and I wouldn't have went if my brother wouldn't have told me he liked it! The reviews are totally wrong! See this movie! Perhaps the biggest bomb in the modern history of film, besting even Ishtar and Heaven's Gate, Speed Racer will only make 19 to 20 million this weekend. Opening-up in a day in date release, world wide, the film is number 6 in England, number 9 in Germany…and, although slightly better, the film is doing meager business in Latin America. Currently, in the US and Canada, the film is battling for the number 2 spot with What Happens In Vegas…which appears to have the edge. Speed Racer will likely come in at number 3 in the box office rankings for the weekend. Speed is dead!!! RIP!!!

Looks like all the Warner Bros. people and agency assistants who've been flooding Perez with positive comments that ALL SOUND THE SAME have not managed to change anything. The movie still sucks, it's still gonna bomb, the executives will all still blame "Iron Man," the floods overseas, or astrological charts instead of admitting that their successes are only a result of lucky guesses and not smart choices. Sometimes with movies like "Speed Racer," we get to see just how "smart" they really are.
