Thery're gonna have to work harder next season!
According to the Wall Street Journal, the home of Gossip Girl, the CW network is tanking.
The CBS/Time Warner co-venture lost 28% of its target audience of 18 to 34 year olds so far this season.
And, its ratings during this month's "sweeps" period — the all-important measure upon which future advertising rates are set — are down about 22%.
According to an insider, if things don't turn around dramatically one of the big partners is going to walk away.
The WSJ also points out that part of CW's problem is that the demo its targeting spends a lot of its leisure time on the internet. Good for us!
And, the Writer's Strike probably hastened the departure of the demo from traditional TV to the net.
Any of you youngins have advice for the suits?

Has anyone heard about the CW being talks with CBS to pick up it's cancelled show Moonlight?
the only good shows they have are gossip girl and one tree hill. everything else is not worth watching even americas next top model is boring now. they need to get good shows. the wb was better before it became the cw

I love Gossip Girl- most of my friends do too… But, Monday is a busy night for most of the target audience. Put it back online. Until then, I'll be watching on Surf the Channel and TV Links, because it's on demand. And word to all the Veronica Mars comments….

The show isn't going anywhere…It is the only show on that pathetic network that brings in money. Don't believe Perez. the show is high on the ratings….He is trying to get a buzz going….If it is ever cancelled, another network will jump at picking it up. Hello… A Cash Cow!!!
i think that since so many of their demographic on the computer they should work harder to make their shows available online so as to boost their audience
josh schwartz did it better on the OC 5 years ago… seriously in GG the clothes these kids wear are fucking ridiculous, the way they act, the shit they do…it's just stupid! they need to stop trying to make TV shows about filthy rich spoiled high school kids..and make a TV show that is more realistic to teenagers

they need organize the entire session for viewing off the CW site. i didn't watch the last ones because the strike distrupted it all and i forgot how good the show was! they had so much hype and press then it all stopped and people who didn't know about the show couldn't easily see episodes.
If Demon O would actually spend some of her budget promoting shows such as Supernatural - which despite lower promotion still has higher ratings than GG - maybe the network would attract more viewers. Eric Kripke has said his budget for Supernatural gets lower and lower each season. If Demon O would stop spending all her money forcing "her baby" down everyone's throats, other shows would have more money to spend.
PUT THE SHOW ONLINE this summer and ADVERTISE that so new fans can catch up on the series… I have more ideas… e-mail me, I need a marketing job! Graduated from Fordham with Marketing degree!
i absolutely love the show Gossip Girl and have followed it from the start. Ridding of the show would deeply hurt the network, and would be a horrible loss for not only the CW, but for me and most teenage girls my age.
Put the real stars of the show, Jenny and Nate, together. Or better yet, move the Humphery family to 90210 and cancel Gossip Girl. Chace will be movie star sooner than later anyway. The two girls that are supposedly leads are more suited as supporting cast members.
Work Gossip Girl for all it's worth. I'm addicted to that show…the problem is that CW as a network is trashy and no one wants to tune into it anyway–didn't it used to be UPN or something? haha.
If they're losing people online also make sure your EPISODES are online. The newest episodes aren't updated often enough, which means we go elsewhere than the cwtv.com website. Idiots.
Honestly, the time slot is terrible 4 us hi-skool and college kids who have big exams ths time of yr. Put it back on Wednesday, later, otherwise Ill have 2 keep watching online.

I go to college and i used to see tons of people watching GOSSIP GIRL when it was on Wednesdays…
The show def needs to go back to wednesdays because they are up against dancing with the stars…
plus so many people still have not gotten used to watching shows again because the strike but next season i think it will be better… especially if they move the show back to Wednesdays at 9!

Advise for the suits… Don't go on summer vacation after most of the season was cancelled due to the strike. Cliff hangers are watched based on being compelled from the previous episode. The viewers have only so much patience.

I think that if things are rubbished all the time, like this article is doing to the show, and being negative, it's hardly encouraging, and good things take time. Sometimes, not everything can work out perfectly all the time in the way that we want it to. A positive attitude towards things though can make a huge difference rather than just being nasty and negative about everyone and everything all of the time. People in glass houses Perez……….. : )
1) Put the show online this summer so vaguely interested fans can catch up
2) Hire new writers. The dialogue is unrealistic. NY's rich bitches definitly have their own vernacular. Learn it. It's ANNOYING and actually pretty painful to hear Blair's cronies speak like they've got something to prove. The audience isn't stupid.
3) Actually, Blair needs new cronies altogether.

I agree. Allow for it to stream on the website. Neilson should get with the times and start keeping track of how many people are watching shows online. It's a disgusting number. No one rushes to the tv anymore since they know any show is available on the net.
I do believe the DVD sales for this show will be high. People my age (early twenties) hear about it and curious about it. No one exactly has time to watch it but they are looking to get caught up for the coming season. If the suits release the 1st season on DVD BEFORE the second one starts, they could be looking at higher numbers.
People in general got used to not watching TV during the writers strike. Next TV season, people will get back into it I'm sure–the CW, and other networks, will gain back a good chunk of the viewers they've lost.

I live in a residence hall on a university campus and the show is extremely popular. The problem is that most of the people catch the show later one by either illegally downloading it or watching it on the net. Basing it's popularity on the amount of people who watch it when it's first airing isn't exactly the most accurate.
first sign of trouble was the cancellation then **revival** of 7th heaven. 7th heaven was awful, but dang. at least have the balls to stick to a decision. then they cancelled gilmore girls–one of the most successful shows on the network. all bad signs that pointed to this. no one should be shocked.
They really NEED TO PUT IT BACK ONLINE! Lots of college students can't regularly watch TV or even have a tv in their dorms. I used to watch it online, but now since it isn't there anymore I can't!!
i love gossip girl but it comes on too early. it should come on at nine and i would be able to watch it. PLUS THEY SHOULD PUT EPISODES ONLINE, if people cant keep up, then they will stop watching. come on!!!

Josh Shwartz should realize the goofy-charmer character gets boring by the third episode.
More Chuck and more Blair, and definately more Jenny. They can act and are characters with dimensions.

Re: Mike – Ummm… did you read the article? Obviously not. Partners wouldn't be 'walking away' if the show was bringing any money in. Besides, the people who help pay for the show (advertisers) only make money if there are high viewers for television (ever notice those 'brought to you by…' commericals at the beginning of every commerical break?). With high online viewers, they don't make any money because their products arn't being advertised, meaning they are paying big bucks for nothing, and they will most likely walk away, ending with no money for Gossip Girls and eventual cancellation.
Don't cancel amazing shows like Veronica Mars and the viewers might not boycott!

Veronica Mars raked in like two viewers a week.
They should get some shows like they had when they were still the WB… What I Like About You, Gilmore Girls, etc. etc. Right now they have VERY few good shows that really appeal to viewers and several that are past their prime (i.e. get rid of America's Next Top Model–no one likes it anymore and it is yet to actually produce a top model). Invest some SERIOUS cash in focus groups!

OMG!!! Gossip Girl is the BEST show on television. How the fuck is it tanking!! they need to change the night back to Wednsday at 9!!! It is such a great show juicy gossip great cast, love the fashion.. Lily is totally gonna ditch Mr Bass for Rufus, theyre meant to be together. Blair is definitly my favorite character she is such a Hot bitch!! Every aspect of this show is amazing.. they just had a character come out, Blair is Queen Bee again, Georgina is finally gonna get whats coming to her, and Nate better dump that stupid bitch Vannesa and get back together with Blair… Chuck and Blair definitly have the best fashion sense out of all of them..

I watched most of Gossip Girl online, and just started to watch it on TV since they've been taking the episodes off the site. I absolutely love the show. I know a lot of people who do the same.

Gossip Girl is really one of the few shows that the CW has going for them…AND EVERYONE IS CATCHING IT ONLINE AND DOWNLOADING IT SECONDHAND!
Honestly, I know they stopped putting the show online because they wanted more people to watch on their actual telly, but obviously it's not working out so well for them.

it was dumb of them to change the time and day that it was on as it was coming back. It used to be a ritual to watch ANTM and then GG but now b/c of timing thats not a girls night anymore. So damn you gg producers!! haha ….but seriously i think that is one of the possible reasons for the crowd downsize.
They should've left it on Wednesday nights for one. They need to add a little but more "risque" drama into it as well.

Yeah, give up. Either give up or make better shows. I couldn't even tell you 5 shows that are on that network. Hell, I can't even remember the name of the network. Or even what channel it's on. I WANT to like gossip girl, but it seems like the only time I watch it is if I happen to flip past the channel when it's airing. Oh, and if there is nothing else on tv to watch.

Oh, and the real-life/onscreen romance is really killing the show. I don't know why, but for some reason knowing they are already dating in real life kind of ruins it.

This is very upsetting.. Its the fucking best show on television aside from the Hills!!! The show is starting to really heat up. I love the beginng when Gossip Girl talks xoxo! What more could you ask in a teen drama they have a HOT cast (Chase Crawford, Leighton Meester). If you want my advice change it to Wed@9, get rid of FUGLY Vannesa and show more of Blair and Nate with no shirt on! If the CW gets rid of this show then they are making a big mistake, huge… The season finale looks amaaazing! Will Lily marry Chucks dad? Is Dan Sleeping with skanky Georgina? Will Blair and Chuck hook up again? Thats one secret I'll never tell, you know you Love me Gossip Girl…..

My sister, who has young teenage daughters, said she watched this once and was disgusted. This show doesn't sound appropriate for young teens, but rather 20 and 30-somethings.
Figure out a way to count who watches online! And did anyone notice that CW doesn't allow you to watch Gossip Girl online anymore? I have to download it because I DON"T HAVE A TV.
The show is actually really good but I think the time change to Monday nights has hurt a lot of their viewers abilities to watch. I know a lot of my friends Tivo the show and watch it on Wednesday nights when there's nothing really on. If anything, a move back to Wednesday nights would be the best bet for Gossip Girl. You can't expect to compete with MTV's Monday nights and have teenage girls watch television at 8 pm when at that point in time, we're still busy doing stuff.

it's not that the show is crap, it's that they thought it would be smart to get rid of the online episodes–which is completely ridiculous since their core audience consists of young people who religiously use the Internet. They need to bring the show back to i-tunes or hulu to get additional revenue.
Make good shows with some substance! I don't think our age group cares as much about the fluffy BS like GG as they think we do. I for one am tired of shows about rich kids, real or fake. Isn't fawning over the rich what celeb gossip is for anyway? That's enough for those who are interested I think. Give us deep intellectual drama and emotion, some meaningful character development.

Put Gossip Girl back on the internet as episodes with more advertising. CW is targeting a group that has very inconsistent schedules what with their finals, classes and friends. Especially during May Sweeps, has anyone considered that at this time of the year the 16-22 year old age group is busy studying for their finals, ap's, SATs, etc. This is such a logical thing, that I can't believe the CW isn't understanding it. Also, since CW is not going to benefit from having their episodes online, someone else is willing to put Gossip Girl on the web and they aren't making any money!
maybe if you can watch the episodes online, like mtv's the hills.

the only shows that get any publicity on the CW are GG, ANTM and OTH..so what the CW needs to do is hit those shows hard and make sure that they are promoting those and their other shows during those shows…

Um.. can you people read? No where in Perez's article did it say that Gossip Girl was being canceled. It simply said that the CW (home of gossip girl) was tanking. Reason being.. The CW SUCKS!! They have no shows worth watching. No wonder they are losing their viewers! Their only hope is picking up a decent show like Moonlight (which is too damn good for their network to begin with) to save their collective asses!

Gossip Girl is such a great show! I religiously watch it weekly, I also Tivo it so I will never miss it, I think everyone should have a Tivo, they are great.. It will record everything you want n then some.. The show is really heating up with all the dramz.. My advice is change it to wed @ 9! xoxo gossip girl
